How to and DIY for repairing a broken seat back adjuster on a 1969 VW Beetle. This repair should also apply from 1956-1972 but some of the parts might be different. I'm not an expert as I have only repaired a few of these over the years. Still, at the very least it will help you diagnose your issue. User discretion advised. I apologize if this video isn't one of my best. Having COVID makes it difficult to do much of anything.

Finally got after my 69 VW bug seat adjuster. I actually took both seats out and swapped the appropriate parts ( Plastic Cam and spring and hook) with the ones on the passenger seat. They were both in not as bad a condition as yours so my repair has so far worked. Your video made it all possible, so Thanks a Bunch!

Glad it helped! That's why I make these!

I have your same BlUe 1969 VW here in Washington State. Typically after driving say 5 miles the seat back gives way and jerks back, I then grab a pillow and stuff it between my back and seat back for support to complete my trip. My winter project is to do the repair, so video is very helpful. Coincidentally I also have Covid, mild case thankfully. Thanks and get well

Get well soon! I thankfully recovered but it took about 40 days.

I was able to use my old spring on one side to add to a tip that I made. I got an old screwdriver (strong plastic) and used an angle grinder to grind it down to size. Making the hole for the spring was a reeaal B__cH but I did it.

That’s an awesome idea. I’m really surprised that nobody is making these.

I was looking for a modification that would allow the stock seat to recline further back, and also possibly shorten the seat bracket so you sit a little lower, gaining more room between the seat bottom and the bottom of the steering wheel ( I like the idea of sitting a little lower, and reclined a little further back than the stock seats allow, but I do like the stock look of the seats ).

You can make it happen with some modifications.

I’m working on having someone fabricate pins. My ‘57 beetle seat didn’t have springs or pins. There are 3 holes, the larger one is for the bar…which hole takes the spring/pin?

Great question. I’ve never disassembled the adjustment on the early cars. Respond if you find out!

My seat won’t latch back unless I physically lift the “hook” portion of the mechanism. When I put the seat forward, the hook fall down. Are there replacement hooks? I believe mine has the tab broken or worn out (that slides on that thin metal piece to keep it raised up so it accepts the seat when put back in the normal position.)

What year seats do you have? Could be the mechanism is bent in the backrest.

I too have a broken camber pin and spring. I assume we are not able to find replacements?

Last time I checked nobody has replacement parts yet.

Getting the pin (nail) out of the adjuster is a pain. Mine was had a spiral twist in it and had to be drilled. Think I’ll replace with cotter pin.

They are made with a spiral. Lube and hammer out.
