Join my wife and I as we do our best to get this old VW camper bus back on the road.
In this episode, I install the VW engine and boy is it a rush!
We hope to do some traveling and camping in it once it is restored and roadworthy.

so awesome...I enjoy the updates! Just passing along some VW experience...I built a mild 1776 with a center mounted 40IDF like you have on your motor. For some reason (and I experimented a ton with various jetting combos/venturis), I constantly had an off idle hesitation that really aggravated me. I added velocity stacks, tried adjusting the accelerator pump and other things...no matter what I did, it always hesitated. Additionally it was a big time gas hog. I would recommend dual 40IDFs with small venturis (26-28mm) that are well sync'd. It will run markedly better. Thanks for posting and good luck!!

Good work on the engine, noted your missing the 2 piece air channel tin with seal that takes the air from your oil cooler and goes fwd through the top tin. You should also have a rare piece called a Hoover bit. The bottom tin is used to deflect air towards the rear of your vehicle a keep road debris from clogging your cooling find.

So cool. I just got my motor in today. Whatca pain in the butt getting that thing lined up. I saw it went from daytime to night while you were doing that. That is going to be one fine bus.

Very nice project! I'm a vw guy for the past 9 years, and I think I can recommend you some things. First of all, get rid of the monza exhaust, it's the only aftermarket exhaust that actually kills more power than the stock exhaust. Get a good 4-1 header and a cool muffler. There are some expensive exhaust like the vintage speed ones that keep the stock look but perform very well. The second thing is the central idf carb. It makes really good power, but it's fuel comsuption is very high. A pair of weber 40 idf gives more power that the central one and when they are properly jetted, they have better fuel comsuption than stock carburetor. great job!!!!! I assume you live in a climate that you dont want or need heat/defrost.....glad to see got rid of all that chrome crap on the engine. It holds heat and can cause the engine to overheat.

I would change the carburetor because the aftermarket ones break quickly,make it burn lean = bent valves(use an OE one )

So true. Dune buggy carbs are set-up super-rich out of the box for performance and every dune buggy owner doesn't complain (when it invaiably makes the engine cook) because that's an opportunity to build the engine to go faster.

Scott Sturgeon I the engine will carbon up 2 more power =more wear 3 carbon = compression loss = less power

clark underwood use solex (the one that fits to you )ones if possible,you can also get an used one for cheap and rebuild it ,it would function like new

How is the wiring going? We are working on our 77 vw bus in Houston and currently at a similar point. I’m trying to decide whether to try and use the 40 year old wires or pull new ones while I have the engine and transmission out.

Actually a touch easier than anticipated! If the wires in the engine bay are junked I would change them.

Great videos, looks like a cool project, and I am excited to see how it will turn out. One thing that I noticed though is that when you were putting in the engine that the engine tin in the front of the engine is for a type 1 (front, close to gas tank), the type 2 is more squared off, to seal the surround. I dont know if they are all like that, but my 70, and my 71 were. Also, did you get the engine tin to direct the hot air from the oil cooler to outside the engine compartment installed?
