How to remove a VW T5 T6 Transporter CV Joint step by step instructions on how to the remove the driveshaft from the vehicle and then remove the old CV joint and prepare the new CV joint and replace. Step by step process to reinstall the driveshaft.

@@youcandoit1828 yes, driving the van. family flies, I drive. it's my zen moment. (I've got 4 kids). plus, we're actually moving from Valencia to Munich permanently. so we're loading it up with boxes. fingers crossed we get to Irdning this summer and maybe take a trip over to Tirol if you fancy a pint. cheers.

Top tip, sleeve a zip tie over and pull it so it compresses the clip, then (just like when fitting piston rings) the shaft will slip under the zip tie and into joint. Cut the zip off off and it will be as easy to get the clip into the recess. Works every time and zero danger of damaging anything.

Nice video. I have a Caravelle 2014 4 wd, and I changed the dust cover on my rear left ( wheel side) driveshaft today. No videos on that on the Internet. I didnt get the bearings of, but the trick was to remove the inside cover (gearcase side) and remove the safetypin from there. After that the gear side came of, and I could easily change both dust covers.. :-)

Thanks, awesome video as always. 😃 The CV's on my classic Merc w123 coupè were a real pain in the arse as on those the end cans can't be removed from the shaft, the boots have to be stretched over with the special tool instead. I always go overboard with the grease. I also replaced my cambelt and water pump after watching that particular vid in the series.🤟

Thanks for this. Do you have the link to undoing the steering rack and ball joint, lower ball joint wotsits that you refer to please? My CV joints are fine but Im watching in prep for if/ when they do. I'm doing the front bearing soon and your video gave me the confidence to do it👍

Brilliant that's the whole point of the channel. the other VW videos I split the steering ball joint . You have to check them out can't remember which one has. Try the track rod end video. You can do it 👍

What tools do I need in order to do this? I noticed the XZN wrench. What about getting off the large nut? Is that a normal hex socket? doesn't look like it. Cheers!

Did this help with the dreaded "vibrating steering wheel" when turning at very low speeds? When I turn (right especially) the steering wheel vibrates and you can here a vibrating noise coming from the right wheel well....I was thinking that it needed lubricating and to my surprise, there are no greasing ports...all enclosed. SO, I thought about changing and re-greasing the CV joints. Finding your channel has been awesome! Thank you so much!

My suggestion is find a carpark, drive in the tightest circles left and right. If the CV joint is shot then it will click and make a noise on the side you are turning. Ie noise when turning right = right CV joint is shot. Theres no regreasing points on Hub assembles and CV' Joints. Just get yourself a new CV joint and replace it. Also make sure your actual wheel is not rubbing when on a tight turn. Check the Steering Wheel is entered on the rack.. You can do it.

so I finally got round to this and I got the wheel off, looked at inner cv....NO SPLINE BOLTS attaching shaft to housing. just the gaiter right up to a clip. my Haynes guide says to break this off with crowbar. but I'm reluctant as I don't have an inner cv or clips to replace it if I break it. any ideas? or am I looking at having to just buy a new drive shaft with inner&outer cv joints already attached? what a bummer....I was excited to get into this one. any and all help us welcome. cheers.

Hi Brad ok look at my DSG DMF Video as it’s shows you how to take off the new type of inner CV joint. Basically you do have to use a tyre lever or crowbar and lever it off. Watch the start off that video and you’ll know what to do. Remember you can do it 😎

What size socket do I need for the hob nut I’ve got a T5 56 plate model. I have been back and forth to the motor factors change in sockets and haven’t got the right size yet. There is a forum but says 30 or 32 mil 12 point I’ve tried those both too big tried a 27 mil and that’s too small. Can you help thank you

If 27 is too small and 30 too big it has to be 28mm on yours. Which seems small but could be. You can do it 👍

Didn't understand about that circlip. You forced past it? without first compressing it?

Hi when taking the cv joint off? You can’t physically get access to the circlip. The cv joint compresses the clip as you strike it to get the joint off. You can do it 👍

@@youcandoit1828 Yes I found that worked. We are just going primitive and bashing the circlip into the compressed position in order to get the CV joint off, then bashing the CV joint back on until the circlip pops back into the corresponding groove of the hardened "star gear". They really don't want us to pull it apart do they? They want us to buy a complete new driveshaft. Bastards. By the way what torque setting for the 8 mm bolts which attach the inner CV to the transmission flange?

Hi, I’ve got a 09 2.5 tdi lwb van, and my drive shafts are different, also can’t get passenger’s retaining nut off 😢 do I need to drain the gearbox oil before pulling them out ?

Hi, the 2.5 tdi is a different beast although the process is the same. I done the 2.5tdi before and you do no need to drain the oil out from memory. As far as the nut goes what exactly is the problem ? If you don't have an impact driver then if its really stubborn, lock the wheel hub by putting two wheel bolts back in and putting a long bar or something that hits the ground to prevent the hub turning. Then its a case of getting a long lever on your wrench to add force to get the nut undone. Hope this helps and let us know how you get on. You can do it :)

@@youcandoit1828 I gave up and got the grinder out 😂 started raining so not taken shafts out yet, I’m actually doing a 3.2 vr6 swap with dsg in my van, stripped the donor car ready and got the engine in my garage sorted the wiring, just got round to removing the engine in my van… just learning as I go, the shafts on the car were bolted where as the van isn’t so didn’t want all the gearbox oil all over by mistake, thanks for the reply 👍

How many miles has the van done and is this the first CV replacement?

That one is the original CV and was just the rubber boot that had split. Mileage was around 160K
