VW Double Cab Bus reduction gear box and hubcap clips
I have to get this guy ready for a relatively long trip where he will be loaded full for an art show. I've adjusted link pins and found missing bolts, even order him some new tires! This is just another day in my life of owing an old VW.

I would put studs in where you welded those bolts! Lock tight them in, Then put nuts back on studs torque to specification drill a small hole and run safety wire through them, that way you save the threads on that housing , thanks for the good videos!

I did use lock tight and welded since weld allows me to check and see real quick if it’s broke and thus loose again! But yep getting you method if I have any more issues! This is a know prob with these lol buggers! Thanks for watching!

At first blush it seems a pretty drastic solution to tack those bolts in, but it’s really an effective risk control. Great hazard management 👍

@marcijunebug 4 жыл бұрын
I look at it this way....it's hard to look under the bus at a glance and "see" if the bolts have loosened...but if they are welded well it is pretty easy to see when a tack weld is broke...so far so good none have backed out yet!

I did not know the plugs would back-off , but i'm new to the buses infact never had a chance to drive one. I would like to change that this fall with my 67 13 window. My son and I attended funfest in raly 2000's. . We miss the last few due to my health. If I can get the motor in my 63 bug and health stays good would like to attend this year. We have a brick in the winner circle he won back in 2005 with his 78 bug. The tags on his vw say FUNFEST..

I work for a fastener distributor, we sell ‘Loctite thread lock adhesive to various industries where vibration could cause fasteners to migrate out of position . There are various strengths and you can still undo the bolt with hand tools. Love the rivet gun tip on the hub cap clips , I spent forever with a hammer to peen over the rivets.

yeah I replied to a comment earlier (so ignore me here if you read that already) the bolts DID have loctite red on them (failed to mention that in the video) but having used both red and blue in sailing rigging and having both fail multiple times I decided to weld also...plus if the weld breaks I will easily be able to tell that the bolt is loosening and the way I put the welds the bolt can only back off so far before the pointed part hits a weld, thus keeping it from falling out completely! thanks for watching!

Wouldn't Loctite read work for the spring plate bolts, to prevent them from coming loose?
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 жыл бұрын
I believe mention at one point that they were loctite red also...reason for weld was 3 fold 1. loctite red WILL break loose in at "stiff breeze" as I use it all the time on my sailing rigging and it is constantly breaking loose, so I don't really trust it 2. I want to be able at a quick glance to look under the bus and know those bolts are good...if the weld is broken it is really obvious one is "loose" 3. the way I welded them if a bold DOES break loose the point of the bolt will hit the weld blob as it tries to back off and hopefully not back off anymore until I notice it anyway...that was the idea behind the welds
@redneckgunwerks9327
@redneckgunwerks9327 5 жыл бұрын
Before you welded those bolts did you think about using safety tie wire like they do on aircraft.
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 5 жыл бұрын
yes...answered that somewhere in the comments...the thing with the weld is that I can very quickly peek under the bus and see if they are working their way loose...if the weld is broke, they are loose. Also with the weld I tried to position it off the flat side of the hexagon so that if it DOES break loose hopefully it will hit one of the points and not back off all the way, i.e. the weld works as a stopper in a way...The bolts also had red thread locker on them...THANKS for the tip tho I really DO appreciate it and thanks for watching!

@@redneckgunwerks9327 no problem, I rarely do either! As I said I truly appreciate any suggestions so keep them coming! Some of the earlier year busses had what they called "wavy washers" here...my 1958 panel has them, but this bus for some reason did not!

Why didn't you just use blue loctite?
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 5 жыл бұрын
Because that would be a boring video! Lol Could have used it...I’ve used it in the past and it’s a fine product, esp good for sailing hardware, I just wanted to ensure they weren’t coming off and if I do have to remove these very easy to just rotozip the welds... Thanks for watching!
@pwbrown1949

Did you try loc tite and music too loud
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 5 жыл бұрын
They have lock tite red and are welded...having had personal experience with both locktite red and blue I’m telling you no way it would hold this. (We use it sailing all the time and it breaks loose often in less strenuous conditions than these bolts are in) plus with the welds I will be able to easily see if something has loosened because of broken weld, and because of how I placed the welds the bolt will only back of half a turn or so before it hits a ball of weld, and I WILL be checking often...music was fine on my end but I will be aware and appreciate your feedback! Thanks so much for watching Paul! 👍
