@@MostlyHelpful I would say it looks 90% and it's 15 year old edition 30. They were a disgrace and embarrassing. After the first 2 runs I thought no way but the third paper and then the T cut really cleared it up. If I had really put the effort in and taken an hour I could have had it like new but had a spare 20 mins and quickly tried it. Everything I brought on Amazon,cost me £20 everything. 2 new lights I was looking at £300 min

It's odd isn't it. You think you've ruined your headlights and then bam, clean and clear. Edition 30 too - nice! Love those (BBS?) wheels they came with.

The garage would charge me £45 every year to polish the lamps when I got my mot. I had some plastic polish called Novus and decided to use that to clean them up rather then get charged. It worked a treat and saved me some money. After a year they are back to how they were, so I may try sandpaper and sealant as well as the polish this time around. Thanks for the video.

Hello! Thank you for your video! I just got a MOT pass with minor defect on my Golf MK5 (57 reg) so I am going to give it a go and follow your video as I do have the polishing attachment for my drill, (bought to polish scracthes out of laminated floor). The other products I will purchase; thank you for sharing the names and links for products you've used. Your video is extremely helpful being clear and to the point.

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and I'm glad you found the video easy to follow. Good luck with the polishing - there will be a point where you'll think you've ruined them and then "bam" they'll come back crystal clear.

Insignia must matter more to some than being able to see while driving? At least the folks behind can see what the preference was and the insurance company is collecting a premium from a fool.

Good guide. I do this on a daily basis and my steps are slightly different because really bad lights need 800 - 1200 - 2000, then I do a 3 stage polish with Menzerna 1000 -2400 - 3500. The kits in shops barely have enough papers to do the job and can be very aggressive, buying the papers and compound as you suggest is a much better option. I also go over the rear lights with some compound as it removes the micro scratches from car washing, brings them up like new. I think the MK5 is becoming a classic, and you've got a great example. (edit - can also use a fine polish by hand to get the dashboard perspex looking great, that stuff picks up scratches so easily)
@MostlyHelpful
@MostlyHelpful Жыл бұрын
Thanks and it's good to hear that your process is similar to mine. I've never tried one of the kits but I imagine if you have none of the items at all it's a quick (but compromised) way to get what you need in one package. Re rear lights, I tend to do them when rotary polishing the paint and as you say, they look great afterwards.

VW Golf MK5s always have a serious problem with the headlights fogging up and yellowing more so than normal for a plastic headlight lense I have no idea why but I did remove 90% of it from the headlights on my mums car which had one of the worst cases of it you could imagine. It was during lockdown and I was bored and I told my Mum I hated the way the headlights on her looked so I was going to polish them she had only bought the car a few months prior and after I sanded them down and polished them back as best I could she was genuinely shocked at the amount of extra light it put out and kept accidentally thinking the full beam was on when driving on dark roads for the 1st couple of days.

It's a really satisfying job isn't it and with no downsides that I can tell. I've done it on a whole range of cars now, but VAG group cars do seem to suffer worse than others. Glad to hear you had the same success I did.

Hi mate Nice video just to know which liquid is on last step the green one??
@MostlyHelpful
@MostlyHelpful Жыл бұрын
Thanks. That green liquid is Dodo Juice Lime Prime (amzn.to/3MXGfWY) which is a pre-wax paint cleaner. But any polish or paint cleaner will do the job, so Autoglym Super Resin Polish would work just as well for example.

hey! nice video, thanks! i do have one question though: does the sealing product go by other names as well? i live in a non-english speaking country and, personally, have never heard of “sealant” in this context. do you think ceramic wax would do the job or its smth else?
@MostlyHelpful
@MostlyHelpful 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Adrian, thanks for taking the time to comment. This is the kind of spray on sealant that I was referring to in the video: www.meguiars.com/automotive/products/keep-clear-headlight-coating?msclkid=a6f3d008ceec11ecb0ca34d3bb9d2c1f There are a number of products like it available but they all seem to be aerosol delivered and the main purpose of it is to provide UV protection. I am not sure if a ceramic coating offers that as a benefit, but it certainly won't do any harm.

@@MostlyHelpful Ordered the sandpaper and tape, thanks. This is giving me an excuse to buy a DA polisher, I think I'm going to go with the one from Halfords. And like the look of the Sonax headlight polish and their headlight protector. I understand this is costing a lot more than a kit but I'll get more use out of it all and hopefully get better results.

Hi will be doing this next week. Ty. I was going to buy a new set but will try this first. Mine look like it's on the inside, I guess I will find out. Is the sandpaper grit? I found some on Amazon wet and dry 1000-3000 grit

Hi, thanks for taking time to comment. I'd be surprised if it's on the inside as it's the coating on the outside that is degrading but anything is possible. This is the sandpaper that I used for the job and it also is available here, on Amazon: amzn.to/35xOSGF. Good luck with it!

@@MostlyHelpful hey thanks. I found the link after I had posted and ordered it along with the buffer and turtle Wax. Can you tell me what sealer you used as i can't pinpoint the one you used. Ty.
@MostlyHelpful
@MostlyHelpful 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, it's Sonax Xtreme Protect+ (amzn.to/3w57HeN). It's more of a paint sealant (which it's really good at) so I don't think it has as much UV protection as a dedicated headlight UV spray (like this one: www.meguiars.com/automotive/products/keep-clear-headlight-coating), but it really helps keep the lenses clean as dirt just rinses off once it's applied.

What about when it appears to be on the inside and only visible at night with the Xenon's on?? Really bugs the hell out of me. Looks completely clear during the day. My bulbs have been upgraded to the brightest on the market (apparently) and they are nowhere near as bright on the road surface as other cars.

I suspect the only options are to split the lens from the headlight body (if possible) or replace. It's a shame when stuff like this happens though for sure and I feel confident in the the future we will see cars written off because their "active LED matrix" headlamps get damaged and are just so expensive to replace.

Should not have to restore headlights on a quality built car. Problem is, the build quality must be lacking initially. Suggest one does not purchase a golf again if one cannot see where they are driving at night. The poor quality creeps up on you for sure, I never saw the issue on earlier golfs, or ever during my time as a rolls Royce and Bentley mechanic. Different breeds I know, but vw seems to have turned into the trebant of motoring and even Vauxhall may have better quality now. Lord sakes, even mg have resurfaced with the car to die for,(and I will die before buying into that current box.
@MostlyHelpful
@MostlyHelpful 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment Gerry and by pure coincidence I was doing this exact job over the weekend on my current car, a 2003 MG ZS.... Regarding the Golf headlights it's not a factor of build quality, but more the degradation in the plastic due to exposure to UV light - you can't change the laws of science afterall. You won't have seen that issue on previous Golfs, Rolls Royces or Bentleys as their headlights will have been made of glass, which isn't affected by UV light. Unrelated, but since you mentioned the brand, my father in law has a MY2000 Bentley Arnage Red Label and last year I got to drive it for the first time. I had high expectations but I must admit I was terribly disappointed. Needlessly light steering, needlessly heavy throttle pedal, dreadful mismatch of user controls (BMW E39 HVAC panel meets machined metal electric window switches) and neither as fast nor as comfortable as I was expecting. As a tool for showing people you've got some cash it's peerless, but as a car to drive it was a mess.
