Software is in fact beta. Buyers in Germany are asked to approve this by signature. They will receive updates next year in return.

Saying this as a software developer: it is better to accept something that works and continue updating it, than pushing the release for something "perfect" later. However, don't accept "good enough" over time. Require improvements and updates. Make yourself heard. Praise the good sides and let VW know of what can be improved.

Yes I read this too - VW is confident with the car not so much with the software - they take the Californian start up approach, they take the 1st editions client input in account for the development of the software continuously - that should also function OTA, rather delay the delivery they deliver now and improve their software on the go. Very un-german.

I would get the Tesla Model 3 SR+. Great features. More than enough range. Better infotainment and MUCH better charging options. Main downside is size if you live in the city. It’s also noisy-ish. Quality is better than rumors and internet claim.

Robert Ekendahl, I like the looks of the Tesla, but I wouldn’t like to own one: the boot isn’t my thing (you kind of have to crawl into the car to get your stuff out, at least if you’re a smallish person), I find the seats way too low down, and the next Tesla service partner is hours away from here. As for supercharger infrastructure, that’s certainly nice, but I’ll be mostly charging at home, so it won’t really matter. Even though I don’t want to own one, it makes me oddly happy to come across a M3, or any other electric car, for that matter. I do love EVs, and I believe diversity is actually a good thing.

What many people don't know about the touch buttons at the wheel is, that these understand slide gestures as well. While pressing it like buttons needs some time until it feels naturall, swiping them to change speed, change radio stations or volume felt pretty good to me. Since many people are complaining about the touch buttons, I'm a bit afraid, that also the slide gestures won't be available anymore in the future. I love it.

As a VW ID.3 First Max owner I do agree with you in almost everything, mainly about the infotainment, right now is too “beta” and fails to be intuitive enough, the good thing is that it can be improved via software updates. The We Connect ID is lacking many features right now compared with We Connect and the eGolf but hopefully that will improve soon. Regarding the interior it’s true that uses too many hard plastics but it makes sense from a CO2 emissions as hard plastics have a lower CO2 footprint and the ID.3 is meant to be a CO2 neutral car and that’s really important for an EV… EVs usually have a higher initial carbon footprint than ICE cars, but the ID.3 is carbon neutral and that means that just by switching to an ID.3 you are already reducing your CO2 footprint regardless of how many km you drive per year and that’s HUGE. I got my car a few days ago so I haven’t had many opportunities to try it a lot or to drive a lot, but it’s efficient, my average commute uses 16,9kwh per 100km (once you adjust it to the actual distance) and I drive a big part of the trip on highways at 100-120km/h. Preheating works like a charm, that’s something I configured the second day and its great. In top of that I can turn on AC with the app before I leave my workplace and it will be at a nice temperature by the time I arrive my parking spot. So far is a great ride but I can’t compare it to other EVs as this is my first EV and I plan to keep it for a long, long time. BTW my first Max uses different tires, Goodyear efficientgrip performance with EV technology and they are REALLY silent, but i can't find those specific tires anywhere, just the regular Goodyear efficientgrip performance so by the time i have to replace them i'll have to get different ones, hopefully even better than the current ones.

Just tested it. I’m sure it’s a good car for many, but it didn’t make me want to buy it. It looks and feels a bit half done and cheap. To me it’s important that a car not only has performance & practicality but also makes me smile when I’m driving and have a good stereo / infotainment. Tesla is really in whole another league, and I strongly urge people to test drive Tesla before they buy anything else. Also, try to look a little into the future regarding value loss, autonomy, insurance (Tesla will have they’re own insurance) etc. I understand most people are not a car person and maybe don’t care, but all people care about they’re money.

Finally got a chance to test the ID3 now and two things that stop me are: Terrible side view forward due to the double A pillars and the insanely sensitive buttons on the steering wheel. Trying to operate cruise control was a nightmare as it was random if it jumped 10kmh by barely touching it or not. The almost fully touch based controls are also way to distracting as I had to take my eyes of the road way to often and to long to see what I was doing.

I think the km/min makes sense while fast charging (DC) because you won't charge over an hour. With AC you are most likely to charge over night and over a long time so it's in km/h. But otherwise a really great review, I hope they can fix the software bugs.

In my opinion, I think an even better 'gear selector' would be to use the paddle shifter on the steering wheel to change 'gears'. So what I would do is design it in such a way that when the car is stationary, it switches between D -> P -> R. Then when the car is driving it would start in maximum regen then you can use the paddles to increase/decrease the regen level like in the Korean cars (like Ioniq or Kona). Not sure why any manufacturer hasn't thought of this yet.
@mrjoe12345
@mrjoe12345 3 жыл бұрын
Regarding the displayed charging speed: I assume it shows km/h for AC and maybe slow DC charging and km/min for DC fast charging. This could actually make sense because you normally let the car charge for quite a few hours on AC, eg over night. That’s why it shows km/h because you want to know how much range you’re getting for every hour you let the car charge. DC fast charging normally takes way less time though. Since you don’t want a multiple hour charging stop, you might like to know how much range you’re getting for every minute you stay at the charger. For some people this may be important for deciding if it’s worth charging a few extra minutes. I know VW‘s choice seems quite odd but I’m sure they put some thought into this. Ultimately I think charging speed in kW is most valuable and it would probably be best if you could choose the unit!

The real contender from Tesla against the ID.3 is the Model 3 SR+ with CATL battery. Coming soon to US and Europe. In China, it is already selling and the prices dropped. Of Corse there was a buying frenzy. So ID.3, watch out, CATL is going to get you! With full Supercharger support, the ID.3 doesn't stand a chance against the SR+. OK it is still a little cheaper and will find its buyers.

SW update for infotainment is fine - if they update regularly. But also *if* the HW has enough performance to add new things without getting more laggy. Hope VW didn’t cheap out, they won’t want to need HW replacments for head units

Yes, the ID.3 would be just about ideal for me, and I am sad that VW won't be selling it in the US. The size, the hatchback, the rear wheel drive, the coasting by default - which is key to the efficiency - are all wonderful. As someone who has been driving EVs for 6+ years in New England, I think VW has missed some key features: heat pump, heated *rear* seats, and most of all, they should have made the direct heating windshield available as an option.

The steeringwheel haptic buttons are the purpose. VW in higher lines allow you to change speed control either by 1km/h iether by 10km/h differe how long the button you hold. It;s only to get used to it. Drivers used to VW cars will be happy. Trust me. Other car makers has ussually different way how to do it. Some cars only by 1km step, some cars only 10km step and soem other cars as long you hold as much they chnage the value - so holding the button 5s will rise the speed by 20 for example.

I have to disagree. This concept is not intuitive. I own an older VW which has different hard keys for increasing the speed by 1 or by 10 km/h

I pre-ordered the id3 1st. But ended up getting the Peugeot e2008 simply because I could have roof racks. I think vw really missed the market here in Norway not having that option on the id3. I must say I am very happy with the e2008, especially the interior and fast charginh, but would have liked the extra 100 km range of the ID3

@@mattgrant9479 True. Actually I did know about that. However, VW during the early release were not forth coming with the details (just some random photos on the net). Plus I need to carry a ski box on the roof at times, so again the VW ID3 just was not correct for me, or for many families I imagine who will have this as their only car.

Great review! The only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on a ID.3 is the lack of towing weight. Even a paltry 400-500 would be enough, but 'twas not to be.

I can’t believe any car in today’s world doesn’t have a backup camera. It’s even federally mandated in the US for all cars sold here. Surprising the more strict EU also doesn’t mandate reverse cameras.

Matt Grant im well aware... I’m just saying it’s shocking that any car sold in Europe which typically has even more restrictive rules than the US doesn’t have a backup camera. Especially any car (even more so an EV) that costs as much as the ID.3. A backup camera probably costs $5 at the most to VW

I’m pretty sure it has to do with the weight. With an engine in front most of the weight is on the front wheels, with a battery, it’s split more evenly and so rear wheels can gain traction!
