Ira J. Young of St. Louis, Missouri is credited with inventing the cotter pin in 1912 when he applied for a patent on a machine that made split cotter pins. However, the fastener itself may have been used as early as the 4th century BCE in gold jewelry. The term "cotter pin" is first recorded in 1881 by William W. Greener, a gunsmith. The name may come from the word "cotterel", which is a pin or bolt used to hang pots over fires.
