This is a video showing the possible OEM Budget front brake upgrades that could be installed on a VW MK5/6. You can do these upgrades using all OEM parts. No need for special caliper adapters or special rotors. All OEM.
1) You have the GTI/GLI brake upgrade. This option uses a MK5/6 front GTI/GLI front calipers and a 312X25 OEM rotor. The stock front stock splash shield can be used. You re-use the stock brake hoses for this application. Video says 310mm but it is 312mm.
2) You have the 2008 R32 brake upgrade. This option uses the R32 caliper, 345X30 rotor and front R32 splash shield. You would have to run R32 brake hoses, as the R32 caliper has a hard line at the caliper, so brake hose is different. The MK6 R used the same calipers, except painted black.
3) MK7 GTI Club Sport/GTI Autobahn/7R/Audi S3 brake upgrade. This option uses the calipers from the cars mentioned in the previous sentence, and the MK7 340X30 rotor. You would need to run the MK5 R32 or MK6R splash shield, as you cannot run the MK7 splash shield, on a MK5/6. The MK7 splash shield bolts up differently. You will need to re-use the stock MK5/6 brakes hoses, as the MK7 hose is a different length.
4) 2017+ Tiguan front brake calipers. These calipers are the same as the ones in Option 3, just not painted red or black. You will use the same rotors, splash shields and brake hoses that you would use in Option 3. The part numbers for these calipers are in the video.
Here are the weights for the calipers and rotors.
MK5/6 GTI/GLI: Rotor 15lbs Caliper w/pads 14.5lbs
MK5 R32: Rotor 24.5lbs Caliper w/pads 18lbs
MK7 GTI Club Sport/Autobahn/MK7R/Audi S3/Tiguan: Rotor 23.5lbs Calipers w/pads 19lbs

I have installed in my Scirocco GTS the brakes from a Leon Cupra 1P, 345mm in the front with discs and protectors from a Leon Cupra 1P, and 286mm in the back with discs and protectors, as well as metal hoses. The braking feels spectacular.

Sounds like a nice setup. We don't get Seat cars here in the states, nor the newest Scirocco, so a not familiar with the cars. I am sure VW does a lot of crossover brakes systems. Just wondering. The 286 in the rear seems a little small for the rear with the 345s up front?

@@oldguyramblings You mean the performance version, right? I couldn’t tell you the reason. What I’m telling you, I found out after many days of searching for information to upgrade my car’s brakes. It makes sense to me that front-wheel-drive cars need fewer rear brakes. The improvement in braking is staggering in a Stage 2 350 hp Scirocco GTS. In conclusion, I think it’s an option worth considering in certain situations, depending on prices or parts availability.

Hi, I wish I could give you a definite answer, but I can't. I have never worked on Passat CCs. I am sure that some of the brake rotors, hoses, and shields will match up, I just can't say for certain. You also need to check if you have an electric Ebrake or cable. This makes a difference, too.

@oldguyramblings
@oldguyramblings 2 ай бұрын
You don't have to run shields, but I always liked the idea. The brake shields are larger than the others so, yes, good to use. We did not get the Polo here in the states, so can't verify the bolt up pattern for your car. The R32 has a hard line at the caliper, so you need the R32 lines.

Well, it all depends on the GTI. Not up on the MK8, as I have never worked on one. The MK7 GTI Autobahn used the same calipers as the S3 and the MK7 R, just painted red. Are your rear stock calipers cable operated e-brakes, or electric?

My suggestion because I have done it on my MK5 GTI consist of 312x25 rotors, Porsche Boxster 986 calipers and steel braided brake lines, and this setup works far better than what you put on or what my GTI started with. My two cents on the matter! Later I added two piece rotors from ECS Tuning to get rid of some rotational mass.

You have to remember the title of this video. "Budget" Brake Upgrades. To be sure, the 4 puck Boxster calipers are nice. I am running Boxster S/996 calipers on my Audi CQ. But this video is just bolt up OEM calipers, rotors, splash shields and hoses. You can do the R32 calipers front and rear, for about the same cost as you doing the 986 calipers, carriers, rotors and hose, just for the fronts.

@oldguyramblings
@oldguyramblings Жыл бұрын
You can use you can use the calipers from a MK5 R32. Yea, I am sure the rear calipers from certain Audi S3/TT are the same, just maybe a different color. One thing you have to watch out for is, some of the newer Audis came with electric Ebrakes. You can also find some of the Passats came with the same calipers as the R32s, just not painted. The early Audi S3s, with VR6 motors used the same rear brakes, as the R 32. You can also look at the MK6 Rs. I believe they came with the same calipers as the R32, just black.

@@oldguyramblings thank you for the information. I bought a caliper with the stamp 17 on it, which was originally blue and was later painted red. i think they come out of r32. I have a Golf 5 2008 1.4 tsi, I upgraded the front brakes to 312mm. I wonder if you know that the rear 310mm calipers will be compatible with the brake line of my vehicle. and which disc should i buy only audi s3 is available in my country
@oldguyramblings
@oldguyramblings Жыл бұрын
@@Savageboss52 Indeed, my R32 rears have 17 stamped on them. So they are probably r32, or 6R. I would not use this on your car, if you are only running the 312s on the front. That is basically a GTI/GLI rotor. Running the 310 in the rear will put to much bias toward the rear brakes. I am not an engineering, but there is a reason behind VAG running smaller rotors in the rear compared to the front. I would just run the matching GTI/GLI caliper and rotor in the rear. Too much rear bias can be deadly.

@@oldguyramblings I understand. In vehicles such as opel bmw, the front and rear disc dimensions are very close. I'm currently using 255/312mm and the feeling of slumping has increased. Doesn't it allow the 310/312 to hold the vehicle from behind and put its head into the corner, which will do the most? Or am I thinking wrong. I bought the calipers for 2400tl / 91 dollars, this price is very affordable. Or should I save it for my future golf 5 gti? The front brakes of the vehicle 330mm rear stock 286.
@oldguyramblings
@oldguyramblings Жыл бұрын
@@Savageboss52 In a corner, if the rear brakes hit first, it could spin you out. For you future GTI, what calipers are they using with the 330mm rotors. Good price on the rears. You have to remember that in Europe, you have cars that we never received, so our OEM brake up grades are more limited. The 310 rears would probably work ok with 330 fronts. The R32 has 345mm rotor with a 55mm piston and the MK7Rs, use a caliper with a 60mm piston and 340mm rotor. So the 330mm rotor would be close.

Do you think it would be a very similar upgrade from a 280mm rotor to the 340 from the tiguan? Did you run into any clearance issues in terms of wheels fitting?
@oldguyramblings
@oldguyramblings 5 ай бұрын
Yes. The last set of calipers used in this video came from a Tiguan(2018+). The caliper from the Tiguan is the same as the MK7 R(GTI Autobahn), just not painted red, blue or black. As far as wheels go, I test fitted a VW 17" Gaol Wheel on a Mk5 R32 and a MK7 GTI Autobahn. They fit easily. You will have to do a search for that wheel, as I cannot post pictures in comments. No guarantees on what other 17" wheels may fit. Main reason I went on search for calipers, is because I am a simple spoke wheel guy, and liked the Gaol wheel.

the only thing i can see with these set ups is the huge unsprung weight factor on the tdi you are going to notice it .
@oldguyramblings
@oldguyramblings 2 ай бұрын
Yes, it does add to the unsprung weight. But this video was not just about the brakes on a TDI, it covered all MK5/6s. Now TDIs are known for getting the best mileage at a constant speed vs stop and go. Like the duel mass flywheel, once a rotating mass is in motion, it wants to stay in motion. Most of the increase in mass in these brake setups, is in the rotors. So once you get the TDI up to speed, this rotating mass wants to stay in motion. This increase in rotating mass will keep the TDI moving forward.
