The Volkswagen Touareg V10 is an understated legend in the sleeper performance SUV category, but one which also comes with many horror stories about their reliability. So with that in mind, what is it actually like to own and live with one of these 5.0 V10 diesel monsters, with their excellent proportions, great handling and Viper eclipsing torque figures?
Well, here are my thoughts from the time I owned mine, to help better inform my fellow V10 fans who are considering taking the plunge on one of these appreciating monster diesels...

@In the Village Tell me about it, lol. I've got a '68 Lincoln now and its a £200 tank at about £1 a mile. Makes the V10 seem like a Prius. Golf R32 as the daily though thankfully, which comes in at a nice 30 mpg average

Just incase it wasn't mentioned before and/or you didn't know, the V10 TDI engine doesn't have a timing chain haha. There are no belts or chains for the engine/accessories. Just a little interesting fact I enjoy about this engine and a funny conversation starter about the car. Great video and as a fellow 07 V10 (110k miles)owner in Canada, I can agree with your points as it is my daily driver for a year now. Good stuff!

Good to find another person who enjoys an unique engine! Yes the "Stirnradantrieb" is crazy and also pretty much indestructable! No Chains no Pullys just forged gear wheels! I own one myself with over 250k miles on! It runs great, the only problem that comes everytime is the air Suspension. The engine just needs good care like regular in time oil changes and once a month a good long Tour to burn the engine clean.

I have owned my 2006 V10 Touareg for just over a year as well. It just turned over 170,000 miles, only about 11,000 since I purchased it. Previous owner had done a full engine rebuild at 155,000 and put in upgraded camshafts and upgraded turbos. I did find a couple of things related to that engine rebuild that weren't right, and unfortunately I had to pay for them rather than the previous owner taking responsibility. Aside from that, the only other problem I had was the center support bearing on the drive shaft failed. VW wanted about $1600 US to fix it, but I found a shop that specializes in rebuilding drive shafts that had one in stock for $400 including tax and overnight shipping. 2 evenings laying on the garage floor underneath it with wrenches and penetrating oil and it was good to go.

Can attest to how this thing eats up the highway! I purchased one sight unseen and drove it 1000 miles home. Could have easily gotten at least 500 miles on a tank of fuel! Was crazy also seeing how effortless this thing cruises...doing over 100mph barely spinning 2000rpm! Simply amazing vehicle! No comparison to my v8 touareg performance wise

The technology is from 2000. I have a facelift V10 with TV in the roof, four zone climate control, four hearted seats, automatic trunk lid, electric towing hook, electric steering column, advance leather package and so on. Empty weight with 75L of fuel is 2830kg on mine. 11,3L average including Autobahn and towing 3,5t regularly. Great car, expensive but great. You don't buy a large V10 luxury SUV with the expectation to only have 1000€ per year service costs. Tax and insurance is 2000€/year. Oh and it's 13L of oil and there is no timing chain, that's the whole point of the engine. Apart from the injectors working themselves in the head, it's bullet proof. Given you do your service and maintenance every 10-12.000km

Great videos and incite to the V10. I have had one for a number of years now and love it to death. Few major issues but fortunately most covered by a warranty i pay for. Last major one was a new alternator. Thankfully i have a great mechanic who was able to get to the alternator which is located right at the bottom of the V from above by removing manifolds and fuel rails etc. Really considering get the engine mapped now after what you report. Really like to know more about that and what settings can be applied etc.
@C_R_O_M________
@C_R_O_M________ 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't remap it. You gain some horsepower (as if the existing power isn;t enough) and economy (leaner map) but you run hotter and with less lubrication thus less long-term reliability. There's always a compromise with every choice we make. In this case it's reliability and with an engine that must be dropped even to take a look at the turbos, I wouldn't risk it.

I got a v10 tdi with over 250k miles on the clock. And the only problem is the air Suspension, because sometimes i can get into Off road and sometimes it screams error. For the costs, its thirstier than my Step dad and you got the audi rs6 breaksystem which is pretty expensive and also it needs 11 Liter oil per change which you should do pretty often to keep the engine without Problems.

Yeah a remap or tuning box is a recommendation I'd make for any performance diesel, it gets great results. I did a trip check the other day after making a longer trip and even with some snails pace traffic due to a crash it still returned 26 mpg average. Great video, I also purchased a 2005 V10 around the same time as you. Mine was probably a bit more neglected than yours and have had my fair share of issues. Luckily I’m a mechanic so can carry out work myself, if your not and are planning to purchase a V10 be prepared for big bills. These cars are getting old and things do wear out. Same as you the air compressor failed but was an easy swap with an after market unit. My water pump failed (research shows this happens around the 120k mile mark) when it fails it will dump coolant into the oil. I’ve also replaced all the gaskets on the oil fill/cooler as they stated to leak (runs out of the V in the block. Like you said other issues have been common to the Touareg. Just a note, the V10 doesn’t run a chain or belt, it uses gears for timing. Also the V10 has two batteries, the starter battery is located in the rear wheel well. I’ve carried out quite a few oil changes now (due to the water pump) really easy to do but does require nearly 12lts of oil and does need to be the correct grade, if not it causes wear to the cams. My really life MPG is probably around 15 round town and mid 20’s on the motorway. I’ve managed to get 32 on a run but was driving like miss daisy.
@HSGAutomotive
@HSGAutomotive 3 жыл бұрын
Ah, thanks for the extra info, I'll have to keep an eye on that in around 5-10k miles or so. If I still have it then anyway. And someone else also mentioned the rear battery, but I don't see how that can be when hooking up the passenger seat one fixed the issue immediately.

@C_R_O_M________
@C_R_O_M________ 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamest5149 There's no belt in that engine apart from a small one on the alternator (which is quite easy to swap and no engine drop needed). The turbos are the dreaded issue with these engines and need an engine drop. However if you take care of them (let them cool before shutting the engine down) they won't cause problems. They are quite reliable..

Absolutely, and the more cars I review on the channel, the better you realize the Teg platform is. The R50 does have around 2,000 updates over the 'normal' V10, two of the most significant ones being that A. It has a surprising jump in torque. Up from 553 lbft to 630, which is massive. And B. That due to it being newer model, you have to fill the smaller tank in the boot with 'AdBlue' to help emissions, which these older ones didn't have.
