My van is due it’s cam belt replacement for the 2nd time. Wasn’t something I was confident in tackling myself as it’s been a few years since I did one, however my brother is still a mechanic and offered to help. This video is not a tutorial but highlights the complexity of the task and isn’t for the average DIY mechanic. Replacing your belt is a service item either on time or mileage depending on your manufacturer’s recommendations. Not replacing your timing belt can be a very costly mistake, as if it snaps it will cause catastrophic engine damage which will cost thousands to put right as a partial engine rebuild is required. 18:10 "I've had it done about 5 years ago and I've done about 28.000 miles on it so I'm changing it on time, rather than mileage" While i'm watching this because i just found out that my van is still on its original belt. Since 2010 and it's got 280K km on it. I really found out about this just two weeks ago, I've been afraid to drive it ever since. Tomorrow i'll replace it, including then pump etc. Thanks a lot for this video! It really helps!

Yes paranoia can definitely kick in lol. My first belt i put on it years ago when i got it had a massive crack on it and was on borrowed time, I was lucky!!! Thanks for commenting, means a lot 👍

@@vwtransportersandmotorcycl3729 It's been years since i've replaced a belt. But armed with a couple of videos and a workshop manual, it should be doable. If you feel already on borrowed time (because of the pump i guess), imagine how i feel about a belt which is 14 years old and has done 280k km. But only recently was on a dyno for a remap. I had never thought about this at the time.. Thanks again for putting up this video.

@@pjotter0 Roughly about 2 hours, it’s probably taken a little bit longer due to filming it though.

Thanks would you change the water pump ever time you change the belt. Is it 5 years what millage interval I read 80k seems low my last car was a audi that had the same 2.0 tdi that was 100k interval. I just had my 2012 T 5 belt and pump done as could only see a receipt from 2018 about 110k ago so played it safe .

@@marksmith8663 Hi Mark and thanks for the comment. It is good practice to change at the same time. I did them both about 5 years ago and as you can see from the video that the pump had started weeping. It would be very counter productive to pay to have the belt replaced and then a few weeks later you realise the pump needs doing and then have to pay again to remove the belt. Also water pumps can seize which comes with other issues such as overheating or possibly snap your belt. For what they cost its always best to err on the side of caution mate. As for mileage and time for replacement, that will vary depending on manufacturer. 5 years is around the bench mark I think. The rubber can dry out and become brittle.

I remember few years ago had works vehicle go in for 100k service and belt change The lease company didn’t pay for pump a month later It leaked went in to do the lot again as I believe it contained the new belt . I change oil filter brake pads etc but belts Not a job for the diy mechanic . If you Get it wrong it’s not very expensive just something to budget for .
