Thats a automated transmission switch. Sport / Economy / Gear 3-2-1 mode 4 speed manual, gear no#4 has got an automated switch for a fixed transmission (no hydraulic lose of power). The transmission you see here is the more modern version of the E30 automatic. My 325i Convertible Automated Transmission (1988) got the simpler version - without this button. The transmission is very long on the 4th gear. More or less you will have to use gear 1-2-3 if you want to accellerate. Gear 4 is like an overdrive saving fuel. Beeing faster than 120 kph is very noisy anyways. My 325i ran more than 210 km/ h on the speedo as i recon 😊

@@fxhood2114 Thank you very much for this very detailed answer ! I don't own any E30 yet, but I think I'd go for a manual gearbox. Though I like to learn all I can before to purchase any model.

Erinnerungen werden wach. Habe zwei 325i Cabrio von 1987 - 1996 als Schaltwagen gefahren. Ab ca. 3.700 U/Min. erwachte der Motor zum Leben.
