VW Baja Beetle - Teaching The Kid - Tune Up, Timing, Carb Upgrade and Tuning

Күн бұрынTune up on your Volkswagen bug engine- so easy a teenager can do it!
We're one step closer as we go through the tune up components on this engine. We change out the ignition cap, rotor, spark plug wires and spark plugs. We remove the carburetor that came with the car and found it was too small so we put on a Solex 30/31 carb. Got that tuned in, checked the timing and it seems to be running much better.

Nice work Levi! You were a big help to Dad. Nothing like passing the wrench back and forth to feel what's tight and what's snug so you both get synchronized. I just got a new RC car. I know what it's like to be back on the learning curve. hehehe

Thanks man. Having your kids out there with you is a win regardless of their age. Both of my kids use to spend time with me out there when they were little. Is the exposure that they need, some of it will stick with them and the rest will come forth later down the road. Stick with it 🤙

I started like that; helping my dad change the muffler in his Karmann Ghia. Then graduated to lawn mowers and back to VWs, which are glorified lawnmowers….🤣😂 I’ve heard the same on 30 vs 34 carbs re tune ability. Good job in teaching your kid useful things; the newer generations desperately need that. Something looks off in the belt alignment; or is it the camera angle? SVDA distributors also help with the stumbling off idle. Just hook up the vacuum line to the carb and works like a charm.

I remember being a little kid and working with my dad on all types of projects. Glad he’s more involved once again spending time with me and learning new skills. The belt alignment is slightly off and we corrected that when we converted it to a dog house cooler ( which we forgot to record) The stumble is gone as soon as we flushed the tank and added some fresh fuel. I wouldn’t mind running an SVDA on this but I don’t have one on hand and I need to address a few other things before I go too far.

Yes sir buddy, always great having him back in the garage again. Can’t beat that quality time together. Engine seems to be pretty decent, stock like engine with big tires lol We flushed the tank, added fresh gas and it runs great… just not much umph due to the tires.

Great video Gary, can't get enough garage time with the young one's, i have always had great success with bumping up the main jet a couple when running the 009, it's great for getting that flat spot out, i did a video three years ago on main jet change that can be done in about 3 minutes with carb still on the engine, the title was (main change jet VW), the little Baja is really making me miss mine, guess i will have to go for a Dune Buggy ride, oh yeah

Yes sir. We flushed the fuel tank and added some fresh gas and she runs great especially with this different carb and bigger main jet. Ethanol content also plays a role with your main jet. More ethanol, larger jet you need.

Good to see your son getting involved! Should have gotten rid of the old gas first and see how it would have ran. Might just be the old gas for it running bad.

Yes sir, always good to have him in the garage with me. It was a combo of the gas and the carb.

Your getting there. Get new gas then you might have to go up a size on the idle jet to overcome that stumble specially if that’s a 50 or 55 idle jet. The carb you took off is a empi 30-pict 1 style. Only really good for single port motor. Let me know when y’all go hit the off road in that thing, I’ll join ya. My Baja is running again.

Yes sir, so close now! We flushed the tank and added fresh gas and she runs just about perfect. No stumble or hesitation at all. Been too busy to get the tag, hopefully soon and then we’ll get together!

nice job. yep...check those advance springs. kinda seems the advance is too early. was always an issue with my 71 datsun 1200. aaah....the good old days....

Yep, good call on the springs. We flushed the tank and put new gas in the tank, she runs perfect now.

Nice work Levi! did you guys ever check the dwell for the points? I'm sure the carb and distributor were bought at the same time both cheap empi's(too strong of advance springs can make it hesitate too not getting the advance it needs)

Good points man. I don’t have a dwell Meyer so I’m unable to check that. We did however flush the gas tank and put in some fresh gas. She runs perfect now. I was about to toss in a different dizzy but Levi suggested flushing the tank first 😎👍

@@VWJawbreaker nice fix! With points adjusting your dwell is key! You can usually find the meters at yard sales or thrift shops. Most people don't use them anymore but I still have a couple and keep at least 1 distributor with points adjusted to perfection as a backup in my car just in case the electronic ignition takes a shit

@@V8N8T I haven’t had much luck finding old dwell meters at yard sales but I haven’t given up yet lol I do the same for jawbreaker, I have a stock distributor all setup with a distributor clamp on it so I can drop it in and run without using a timing light.

Hey ! What you need since it's a baja is a 38/38 EGAS center mount carb kit . I got the 32/36 progressive . it runs like normal until you get over half way then the second barrel kick in and it shoots more rpm . I probably would have liked the 38/38 but this one give good mpg . If you can get a used intake for one on Amazon they have them for 135 but I can bet it aint going to have the right jets . I wish I had the baja and you had my lawnmower . because I would not waste time mowing grass I would be fishing at the beach .

Yes sir, I’d love to have a 38/38 on this Baja. They are great carbs and better than the 32/36 and easier to tune imo. But I had this 30/31 and it’ll do just fine for the time being. Maybe down the road I’ll look at the swap meets and see if I can score a 38/38.

@@VWJawbreaker I would like one but the mpg goes out the window . 110 cam kit . D ports on heads and intakes with that 38/38 .= 90 mph . on a baja with big tires the mph goes way up . My neighbor had a lime green one with a 1600 single port 30 pict carb and it would cruise at 80 mph . Did I mention - I like the baja !!!!

Looks like a 28 Pict for sure. Look at the fit on the manifold. A bigger carb would surely wake things up! And a 110 main jet? Yikes. that's lean AF!

Yea sir, small carb, small main jet and bad gas…. New carb, bigger main jet and we cleaned the tank and added fl fresh fuel…. Runs great!!

Pict 30 round bowl good for single port easy totune checkout appletree s version modified for baha racing .I never was a fan of the adapter plate usage.

It had the adapter plate on it like the 30/31 did to go to a newer intake.

Do those one piece front windows leak like a sieve? Previous owner of my '66 baja put those in and did a hack job on the seals. Ive read nothing but horror stories about them. Take me back tho, my dad teaching me about points and carbs (and a lot of cv joints) on his baja. He had a '71 baja. A '73 Super, and a really nice '79 convertible, if you're into fuel injection (he was not lol)

This Baja came with the one piece also. They do not leak, as long as you get them rolled up properly…. Which is a chore in itself. I had the same experience, spent many long days in the shop with my dad and grandfather. Hoping my kids have similar memories.

@@VWJawbreaker mine roll up and down ok, but the front lower corner (where the wing window used to be) it's like dude gave up on the seal and made it with black rtv and his finger hahaha
