Narcissus is about empathy, or rather a lack thereof. Being in the world for so long, being in so many communities, social spaces, and scenes, I am still somehow wildly astounded when it comes to recognizing the people who cannot grasp the concept of empathizing with others. I have become so numb to the prospect of one's own personal sensitivities and traumas be jeered at, to the idea of reading queerphobic stuff every day, to the constant fighting and bickering on account of some bad-faith person. To me, I'm so numb that it doesn't really hurt anymore. Instead I just find myself hoping that the people who are so coarse and angry all the time are able to experience the happiness and companionship needed to get them to figure themselves out. Until then, they can only stare at their own reflection, their only Real company.

oh wow, this one hits really deep right now. the lack of compassion for others im seeing in my life right now, especially from my own dad, is so saddening and sickening to me. my dad knows he has issues but refuses to even take the smallest steps to do anything about it (even when offered help from someone close), instead choosing to find enemies in his girlfriend, myself, and really anything else he can pin the blame on (which is usually marginalized groups because of course it is). i’m afraid to become like him, as we have some strong similarities, and i haven’t been the best in the past, as long as i never lose my love for the world and the people in it though, i think i’ll be alright, the world can be awful but it’s more than worth it to fight for and protect the good and kindness in it. i like to believe that my dad has the capacity to be a better person, he’s shown that he can be kind before and he has so much love for music and nature and animals that he instilled in me, i don’t want to just ignore the harm he’s done though.

@@mavohq damn :( That is surely a hard place to take the high road. there are sides and angles to everyone and I'm glad some good can atleast be seen in him. however parental neglect is never justified or excused. just remember that our environment is a heavy influence to our early development, so I don't blame you for all the shit you feel bad about having done in your past. that's on them for making you who you were. Most important is to forgive yourself for being born in such conditions that were beyond your control. Now you get to define yourself and show him that change is possible ^~^

Man, working a retail job really makes the words from your video's description, and the song lyrics really stick out. The amount of silliness you hear from folks all day long can make it hard to smile. But, it at least makes the folks who are compassionate, thoughtful, or patient, a genuine treat to help with whatever they've come in the store for. Awesome song. Thanks for writing and sharing it!

As someone who probably has very little in common with vylet and many people who also like these amazing tunes. I'm always happy to hear a new song. They are always thoughtful or nostalgic for me. Despite living very different lives and going down different paths. Im always stunned by how close they hit home for me. I guess it's nice to know that despite our differences in both life and outlook. We're all still people. It's hard to put into words.

Utterly gorgeous, this is an absolutely stunning song about such a life altering topic. It hits particularly close to home seeing as I was this person, transphobic and hateful towards everyone else, but at the same time so self centered and egotistical that I couldn't see the only person I hated was myself. Thank you for this song that has so thoroughly summarized that inner struggle.

I never feel empathy about people online anymore. Even when the sentence is bigger than the crime, i don’t feel bad because of how overdramatized everything is and because everyone always says they’re bad so they have to me. Colleen ballanger got laughed at by the entire internet for a poor choice in apology videos, and though she did something terrible, I don’t doubt she gets laughed at or weird looks in the street now still because of it (not saying what she did was right, rather it was terrible sure but the punishment was too harsh.) Victims are always put in the spotlight unless they want to be anonymous or people are kind enough to protect their identities. But that stuff still lingers. Imagine being groomed or having some big drama with a friend, and then all your messages and drama is put online like a newspaper or magazine, only for people to go to the next big scandal next week. The only reason we dont react as much is because it's online and peer pressure. if you utter that someone didnt deserve the punishment they got, people will dogpile you and paint you as a pedo supporter. It feels so scary being online for me. That’s why I never voice opinions on drama videos anymore. One time I corrected someone on using the right pronouns for a non binary person who pretended to have Tourette’s (tics and roses.) and people were quick to dog pile me, saying stuff like “they’re a bad person we don’t need to respect their pronouns.” And stuff like that, as an agender person, just hurts me so incredibly deeply in a weird way I can’t explain idk. (IMO, if you say that stuff, it’s like saying your gender identity can be taken away from you if you do something wrong. That it’s a privilege that can be taken away at any point.) Doesn’t help the semi-manipulative wording some drama channels have, describing even the smallest crimes online as the most disgusting horrid and low life thing to do. It enforces good behavior, obviously. But heavily enforces negativity towards the people in the spotlight too. And now that the internet is such a big part of life for a lot of people, i hope those people can be okay. I’m starting to get that empathy back, but it’s still hard sometimes. And hard to find drama channels that actually mean that “don’t attack anyone mentioned” warning they have in the beginning. (Sorry for the long rant.)

Until then, they can only stare at their own reflection, their only Real company." You are putting way way way too much faith in humanity. There a re plenty of people who'd put a bullet in your head for speaking different language, or literally dressing up not like most people. They would not have second thoughts, they will never regret it, they believe they are righteous. WOrld is a bad bad place. Be grateful you have people you can trust and relate to, and don't read too much social media. Save your nervers.

I'm not Vylet, of course, but as someone who hopes for the same, the hope doesn't lessen if people remain the way they are (maybe it does for Vylet, IDK, as mentioned, just posting this comment because I could relate to that description). You're right in that there are people, who, sadly, have lived or will live their whole lives being hateful and not getting over their problems. Personally, I do think everyone has potential to become better, though. And we can't always predict which people will be those who will change. We can estimate probabilities and collect statistics, but being certain that someone will remain spiteful, hateful or whatever else isn't be possible. So the way I look at it- everyone can change. Whether they will is a factor of circumstances and free will (if you believe in it). Being angry about trolls, jerks, and other such people will do nothing, so might as well live my life. Hopefully some of those people will grow to be better, and if not, well, it's a sad part of life. Given unlimited time and resources, I'm sure everyone could become good eventually, but such is not our fate. When it comes to hateful actions with real impact on myself or others, that's when I may feel anger. But "low-level jerks" might not even impact others that much, especially if the people they're trying to bring down know their worth.

nice song but the subject matter of narcissism and lack of emotional empathy portrayed in a bad light leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. there are innocent people who experience narcissism and lack of emotional empathy such as myself and many of us still find it in ourselves to be more compassionate than most. we are usually simply traumatized people who have developed an unhealthy coping mechanism like any other that happens to often harm people, as many symptoms of mental health disorders do. it's not fair to us to have disorders and symptoms we can't control have a label of amorality attached to them. you don't have to stick with people who hurt or abuse you, but don't treat people like me as a monolith of abusers. just keep that in mind

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! I wasn't quite sure if it was just me or if I was reading too far into it. I'm not personally low empathy nor do I have NPD but I am autistic and I have some traits associated with NPD + some other cluster B disorders and this kind of thing makes me uncomfortable. I'm sure there were no ill intentions with this song, and in my opinion the lyrics did show a level of understanding towards the kind of people described, but still.
@VyletPony
@VyletPony 8 ай бұрын
i'm aware of this and it has nothing to do with what the song is about. the intention of the song is examining the lack of empathy particularly coming from people who actively choose to ignore or harass others on the basis of choosing their anger over growing up. the song is not about narcissism, it's about internet trolls who have no sense of authenticity and cannot operate on a single ounce of genuine outlook towards anyone. i do not have any interest in overexplaining every extremely personal song i'm going to be putting out because they are about specific events in my life and specific things i have experienced. i started writing this song after i expressed discomfort over things like the mlp fandom's "Cupcakes" and "Smile HD", and someone called me a "weak link" because they assumed beyond reasonable doubt that there is no reason why those things should be hurtful to me or upsetting to me. this concept trickles into a million other things i see daily and has nothing to do with narcissism, it has everything to do with people who cannot fathom other people with different lived experiences, therefore they can only really find affection in their own reflection, as there are no experiences different from their own in the mirror. [edit: additionally, my whole entire point of this song is feeling a hope that anyone who is how i describe can experience happiness and peace and find a way to live healthier and be happier. i think no matter how what you decide this song means, that is an important outcome to recognize.] thanks 👍

@@VyletPony it's definitely a very important topic to speak about,i know what it's like to be affected by that kind of thing and i was one of those kids who stumbled upon smile hd as a kid and was scared by it; im just put off by the title (Narcisssus) and the mention of the lack of empathy because all too often i see people like me being stigmatized and it's made me understandably very prickly about potentially seeing it in media. often things are made to intentionally make people with npd or aspd out to be monsters. im glad this wasn't one of those works, just be careful with word choices in the future the point itself though is very valid
@VyletPony
@VyletPony 8 ай бұрын
i understand completely, but i was more interested in the mythos rather than the term. the concern is totally valid, but my aim was not to discuss narcissism or mental illness in that vein. i liked using the myth of narcissus because it's pretty and dramatizes the idea of the kind of person i'm talking about, instead of me describing the same person in an angry or vengeful way. i like picturing them as like beautiful and dazzling but having this thing that they have to work through. hopefully that makes sense. i just love things like that. [edit: lately i have also been doing a lot of criticisms and analysis of people and experiences in my life that are negative, but i use my oc or a character as a standin. instead of being accusatory and trying to point fingers at people, i find it more effective to use myself, because a lot of the times i am talking from a standpoint of either having been the person i'm criticizing or understanding where these things come from either way.]
