Mozart’s second-to seventh-string quartets are nicknamed “the Milanese”, and the next batch of six are nicknamed “the Viennese”. These latter, although written only about one year later, are supposed to demonstrate a marked development due to the influence of Haydn. I’ve been going through the quartets in order, listening to one each day. While the eighth (first of the Viennese) would seem to me to fit the paradigm well (partly because of the fourth movement fugue, but mostly because the first-movement transition from tonic to dominant in the exposition is smoother, much less abrupt than in the Milanese), this one, the ninth, strikes me as a bit of a throwback in many respects.
