Don't EVER let your children sit like this. I'm a teenager suffering from the after effects of W sitting. Because of sitting that way, my hips now point outwards while my knees point inwards, my shins point outwards and my feet face forward when they should ALL face forward. I get horrible pains in my knees that prevent me from even walking at times and I begin crying (I don't cry very often keep in mind). I have to take physiotherapy sessions now and I've seen multiple doctors about it. It's also prevented me from going to school some days. So it is a big deal, NEVER let your child sit like this.

Kia C. I don’t have any of that fancy pain or inwards knees but as another kid who used to only sit like this my knees sometimes have what I can only describe as a soft dislocation. Leaving me unable to unbend my leg by itself like it’s locked or something. It doesn’t hurt but it keeps me from walking when it occurs.

@@weeb9086 You're going into middle school - so you haven't gone through all the growth of puberty. My stepson has this problem, and yes, you will develop real problems. Your bones are going to go through a lot of remodeling and development in the next few years. If you continue to sit like that through all that growth, it will effect the shape of your bones.

W-sitting isn’t a disease. It’s more of a sitting posture that counts as a stretch. Maybe you sat way too long in such a position. There’s nothing wrong with w-sitting inherently. If you developed problems, it’s likely because you have had other genetic or environmental issues or some other underlying cause. If you want to fix that, you should try Seiza sitting. But honestly, there are many people in Asian countries who continue w-sitting into adulthood without any problems. And they have floor sitting cultures! There’s no way! No way that w sitting is bad! Impossible! Maybe it shouldn’t be the only posture used by people, but if people use the posture, it’s totally fine. I think it should be reserved more for women and children because of men’s lower flexibility, but even men should strive to have enough flexibility to sit momentarily. The posture is healthy. I’ll let my child sit like this. I’ll show them all of the sitting postures, however. Especially Seiza, because any other sitting posture outside of Seiza, W, and Yoga sitting cause pain in the back. Honestly, you’re comment reminds me of a person who said he got scoliosis from sitting a lot. Obviously, not everyone who lives a sedentary lifestyle is going to get scoliosis, just as not everyone who sat in w-shape as a kid is going to get the conditions you have. Look at the bright sides. W-sitting means that you can sit in one of the most feminine postures for adult women, and it also means that you have a hip flexibility and hip joint health that many men and women don’t even realize that they’ve lost. I hope you are able to correct your gait and standing postures, but I also hope you don’t throw away such a neat ability and such a nice sitting posture. I used to be able to do w-sitting and seiza like a pro in my sophomore year, but as I stopped having free time from school, I lost all of that flexibility. Now in college second year, I am barely gaining back all of that ability for my health for my elderly years. It is actually the people with no hip flexibility that get hip problems in their old age. Keep that in mind. Flexibility is truly a mark of health. Not strength, not speed, but flexibility. I hope you have improved your postural issues. I just realized that your comment was two years ago. Take care.

@@alanandrade2083 Exactly. I like this comment. Asians who have floor culture have been doing this forever and do they have problems? I think the issue here is the application of "too much of everything is bad". As you said w position in itself isn't bad. But if you're sitting like that EVERY SINGLE TIME, frequently, then yes it'll cause a problem. Just like the other sitting positions.(sitting on a chair, seiza, cross-legged etc...) In fact, Asians who have the floor culture /just any culture in general that constantly has floor culture have wayyy more mobility (/lower body mobility/flexibility) than the cultures that dont. This idea that W sitting is bad and it need to be "corrected" will make these kids loose their lower body flexibility. Yes it's definitely an issue if you're doing it wayyyy to much. I'm looking up these videos because I want to learn how to do this w position. But it seems like every video is just showing how "bad" it is etc... I can't find any tutorial video. Guess I'll have to figure it out for myself...
