It needs a shorter spindle really. 🤣

Dang, you break everything you touch! Just kidding. There are different thermostat temps for summer and winter use. Don't forget to fix your drill press. You said to remind you. I always have used green coolant for everything. Didn't know there was any diff. Polyglycol or something like that. You might want to use antisieze or light grease on steel bolts into aluminum housings especially when water is involved.

>> There are different thermostat temps for summer and winter use. (Ok. Explain that one to me.) Understandably the engine will run a little cooler or hotter depending on ambient temperature extremes but within normal circumstances the engine temp should remain within its normal range. I called myself being careful when removing those little bolts. Fail. You've got to really baby them if they've been in there a long time. I don't trust the old green coolant in engines where there is a mix of iron and aluminum. GM stopped using it in the early 1990s. I was shocked at the amount of corrosion on the aluminum engine components on this engine. Should have never occurred in my opinion.

@@ImpalamansGarage I think the summer temp one's are set at about 179 f and the winter ones at about 195. I guess that helps counter different ambient temps. I don't think thermostats are either all the way open or all the way closed so I guess it helps. My brain is starting to hurt trying to think about it and figure it out. Dah!

Hi I just bought a 300SD and the engine has seen better days so I was thinking about rebuilding it and was thinking of turning it into more of a performance car. I was curious how much horsepower could I max out while keeping it reliable and safe. With all performance parts going into the engine what would be a reasonable amount of power? I am trying to get around 300-400 hp out of the engine and wanted to know if that was possible?

Austin I would say that in general these engines might be able to stomach 200hp with stock internals. That is just a guess however. Anything more and you will need to beef up the bottom end IMO. There are a handful of diesel performance shops out there that can provide you with proper guidance. Start with Doomsday Diesel. I'm guessing he can lead you in the right direction. Note that the stock transmission and differential will need attention as well. You'll just explode them if too much power is forced through them. Point being it's not just about the engine.
