Here's a quick tip showing a homemade adjustment gauge for an adjustable coil vertical like the SuperAntenna MP1 shown, which is one of the antennas I carry for POTA activations. The same type of gauge can be made for antennas such as the Wolf River Coil and others. Of course, this assumes that you've already measured and documented the coil tap positions for the bands you choose to operate on. The coil shown in the video is part of this antenna:

Fantastic idea. Ive owned my mp-1 for around 20 years. I made a coil rule out of a plastic school folder ( bright green so i dont loose it) but honesty once i got used to using the mp-1 , i just tune it via noise, and the only place it's touchy is on 40 meters, and of course the bandwidth is very,very narrow. The most important thing with these mp-1 antennas are if we use it elevated ( tripod or mast) vs. Ground mounted. Elevated requires elevated and tuned to ¼ wavelength for the band you want to use. Ground mounted, screen, or a bunch of 10-12' wire radials. When i first started with this antenna about 20 years ago, i was really frustrated with it. Playing on 20 meters one day i made a bunch of DX contacts, blew my mind! And running QRP on top of it all! It takes some work and patience to use it but it works. But its not a good choice if you want to do band hopping . I really like your coil pre-setter.

Alan! Just passed by to say tank YOU! I just passed today an interview for a technical role in electronics , I have been now on a unrelated industry for the past 20 years and electronics has been a hobby/passion all my life, and I largely attribute the last step I needed to your generosity doing this videos so people like me that didn't had a chance to get formal education could also get a chance at it!! Thanks from the bottom off my heart and if by chance you, one day, came to England where I live and work now or to Portugal where I am from and often go in summer please just let me know!

Great idea! Sadly, I got rid of my adjustable coil based antennas specifically because i didn't like having to fiddle with them. Nowadays my antenna of choice is the chelegance mc-750 specifically because it has the band markings etched into the whip.

Most loaded antennas are, especially on the lower bands. They can also be touchy when just a few short radials are used.

The dimensions will vary depending on the whip you use on your antenna. So, you'll have to make careful measurements on your antenna and custom fab your own gauge.

The problem is that the tap locations will vary with the length of whip used. I am using a 10' whip instead of the much shorter one that it came with.

The MP1 comes with a gauge in plastic much like his index card.
@w2aew
@w2aew Жыл бұрын
@@KevinMaxson They didn't supply this when I bought the antenna over 20yrs ago. And, their gauge would only be valid for the stock telescoping whip (and I use a longer on on mine). Good to know that they're including a gauge now, great!

Fantastic idea for Parks on the air!!!! I am unable to comment on the video that brought me here, so pardon me for asking here. The display on my TS 940 has went completely blank. It had set for about 8 years and worked for about 10 minutes when I powered it up. I did some investigating and see the battery is corroded and obviously bad. The sub display is also erratic. Is it possible the battery on the digital board is causing the frequency display issue? It has never displayed the infamous dots associated with cold solder joints Thanks for any help or ideas

The PVC pipe cutting looks industrial level working, precise and smooth, I don’t think it’s possible at home.
@w2aew
@w2aew Жыл бұрын
The pipe I used is the soft plastic/PVC type that you typically find connecting a bathroom sink drain to the house plumbing. Quite thin and soft, and can even be cut with a sharp utility knife. This "machining" can be easily done with a hacksaw and hand drill, or a bandsaw and drill press. Final clean-up with a file and/or utility knife.
