Wade in the Water (1925 Recording)- Performed by The Sunset Four Jubilee Singers
“Wade in the Water” was written during the era of slavery in the United States but was not officially published until 1901. Its lyrics have coded instructions to the enslaved escapees about how to avoid being re-captured. It suggests walking or "wading
in water" in order to hinder the dogs of the enslaved escapee's chasers.
The song is normally associated with the Harriet Tubman ("Moses") and the Underground Railroad though it’s been documented that Harriet Tubman never actually sang this spiritual during the time she led her loved ones to freedom.
The song also relates to the Bible. Its verses reflect the
Israelite's escape from Egypt as described in the Book of
Exodus. The Chorus also refers to John 5:4, about The Pool of Bethesda…"For during a certain season an angel descended into the pool and stirred the water. Therefore he who first entered after the stirring of the water was made well from whatever disease he was held by at the time." Berean Study Bible
Growing up and being baptized in the Black Baptist Church, I can attest to the fact that the chorus or "refrain" of "Wade in the Water" was frequently sung during baptisms.

Read more info about this timeless Song in the Description Box ------ Though many associate this Spiritual with Sis. Tubman, it was not used by her for the Underground Railroad. She sang two songs while operating her rescue missions. Both are listed in Sarah Bradford’s biography Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman: “Go Down Moses,” and, “Bound For the Promised Land.” Tubman said she changed the tempo of the songs to indicate whether it was safe to come out or not. www.nps.gov/hatu/planyourvisit/upload/MD_TubmanFactSheet_MythsFacts_2.pdf

My great grandfather was a slave and his father was as well. By the time I got around he was very old and didn’t speak. We never got close because our only communication was through gestures. The only time I ever heard this mans voice was when he broke out in this song while his wife was signing. He had the most amazing voice I have ever heard. By far the deepest and most beautiful voice I have ever heard. That was the first and last time I ever heard his voice and can still remember it perfectly 20 years later…Certain songs have true POWER. This is one of them. Do not let your children forget the roots of the spirituals. They are slowly taking this out of the history books. Can not let it happen.

You must treasure that so. He was carrying the burden of history. No matter how folks try to stop the teaching in those southern history classes, (or other areas I spose), the truth comes out. The music is the truth. I try to share the wonderful old gospels and civil rights songs I know for I never believed we would be at a place where folks want to "create their own truth" and pervert the word 'freedom' to mean something trivial. Share the music. We all owe a HUGE debt of gratitude for the music from the black community! Every country on the planet knows where this amazing music sprouts from. Everyone knows!!! Truth. It's powerful.

Beautiful story. You must treasure that. He must have carried an incredible burden of history. If some folks don't like teachers teaching true history, just listening to music born of those times is history. No one can take that away. The black community carried gospel music in their bones. They're the only ones who sing it with such depth and power.

@@dianapopa3356 "Wade in the Water" (Roud 5439) is an African American jubilee song, a spiritual-in reference to a genre of music "created and first sung by African Americans in slavery". The lyrics to "Wade in the Water" were first co-published in 1901 in New Jubilee Songs as Sung by the Fisk Jubilee Singers by Frederick J. Work and his brother, John Wesley Work Jr., an educator at the historically black college in Nashville, Tennessee, Fisk University. Work Jr. (1871 - 1925)-who is also known as John Work II-spent thirty years collecting, promoting, and reviving the songcraft of the original Fisk Jubilee Singers, which included being a member and director of the Fisk Jubilee Quartet. The Sunset Four Jubilee Singers made the first commercial recording of "Wade in the Water" in 1925-released by Paramount Records.

I’m not black, I’m Hispanic. But when my chorus teacher had us sing this in my junior year of high school. It made me happy. It was so great because I’m against racism. And it was great that my chorus teacher wasn’t afraid of the school possibly saying we couldn’t perform this song over it being “controversial”. But as I’ve heard and been told, some things need to be brought up and made apparent even if it makes some people uncomfortable. We all know that bringing up slavery makes people uncomfortable but that’s no excuse for pretending it didn’t happen or ignoring it when it’s brought up. It’s no excuse to pretend Racism isn’t a thing or to just ignore it. We all have to do our part. Because at the end of the day, no matter what color your skin is, what race you are, or what gender you are, we are all humans and should all treat each other as such.

I want to be free& equal to Whites in this country of my birth. I've been marching since high school in the 70's: against Vietnam, for justice, for the King holiday, for the Unborn...and now, for George Floyd & justice. I'll be 66 on Friday, and I want this younger generation of Black, Brown, Asian, & Native folks to have it better than I've had it, racism wise. And I want young Whites to understand, & love their darker brothers& sisters. God bless you, dear one. ✌🏾, Bro. Mitch in Mpls.,where we honor the memory of George Floyd ✝️.

my music teacher in highschool taught us this song and a lot of others like it. All of them haunting and beautiful and passionate. I still tear up when they come to mind over a decade later. I wish she had also taught us what they meant and where they came from, but I'm glad I've learned since

This song is much more than special. The bravest people were the slaves, one thing they could never take from them is their beautiful souls, their beautiful voices, their humour and kind hearts and their love of God ... I remember as a young woman watching Roots for the first time, it broke my heart, I looked up to the skies and said ‘white man has a lot to answer for’ (while sobbing) there is nothing wrong whatsoever having dark skin, its beautiful, its having a dark heart that is an individual’s problem, love to all .. x

I think the misconception is others feel they SHOULD be black to listen to different types of music. We are way past that, as we have laws in place. However, I cannot ignore what happens in the news in modern society. So I give thanks to my ancestors for saving who was saved and wish for the younger generation to find their own path instead of following other’s footsteps. Much love, Shalom 🤟🏽☯️

I'm a black Southern girl, (woman I should say). And I remember my elementry school that I went to, this is one of the slave songs that we would sings. I was in choir, & we had many that we'd do. Especially during black history month. Even if it wasn't black history month, we'd sing after school. It's refreshing to hear it again after so long. My school I went to had 99% people that went there were black. And even as kids, we knew that this song had a deep meaning & told true tales.

@@cynthialigginsthomas you are so very welcome. Being a middle aged white man every time I want to comment on subjects such as racism I honestly feel that for some reason I really have no right to share my opinions. The white population have historically done to what society wrongly calls the minority is so reprehensible even today as I myself have never been prejudice toward anyone I still feel the guilty and ashamed of my ancestors and even the actions and opinions of many people today. I have so much empathy and love for anyone who is considered by some second rate citizens from the black people in America to the uyghurs in China, the colour of skin, the faith people believe in even sensuality means absolutely nothing to me except for the ugly history humanity seems so keen to bury and pretend that the awful things we've done and still do are not such a big deal. History lessons in schools skip right over the slave trade opting to teach the more palatable selection of historical events. The society and way of life the west enjoys today was built by the slaves who laid railway tracks, mined for the precious materials and laboured in some of the horrific conditions in the cotton fields where so many lost their lives and don't get me started on the lynching of black men accused of just saying hello to a white woman. These things need to be taught and debated in schools. After fighting cancer for nearly two decades my body is destroyed and disabled, I've had experience of being made to feel invisible and a second rate citizen but still I feel that I have no right to have an opinion on racism and though I have so much love I often get told to shut my mouth because I'm not black and therefore should keep my opinions to myself and that makes me so very sad indeed. I'm sorry for this long comment but there's so much I wanted to get off my chest.
