We're changing it up this week with a brand-new WAFER PAPER tutorial! Learn how to make these delicate, life-like Butterfly Ranunculus flowers out of edible paper, right down to the centers and stamens!
For you fellow flower-nerds out there, our flowers in this tutorial are based on a butterfly ranunculus variety called "Ariadne".
Tools & materials needed:
* Wafer paper (we recommend O-grade wafer paper by Oasis Supply)
* Cornstarch and a fluffy brush
* Flat-edged and/or round paintbrushes and a paint palette
* A waterproof work mat, self-healing cutting board, or plastic placemat
* A half-sphere silicone mold, or spoons, an apple tray, or any other curved flower former that you have on hand
* Gel colors (I used Americolor Fuchsia, Xmas Red, and Chocolate Brown, plus Wilton Moss Green)
* Food-grade glycerine
* Water
* 18 g floral wire (any color) and brown or green floral tape
* Needle-nosed pliers and wire cutters
* Foam pad, Dresden tool, and medium/small ball tool
Petal guide:
* Each flower has one center "bud" and a row of fringed stamens
* Larger flowers can have an extra row of fringed stamens
* Each flower has 10-14 petals
* I like to cut petals freehand, in three different sizes -- starting with 1.5" wide strips of wafer paper (see video for details)

I tried doing wafer paper, but must be getting my petals way to wet because they just stuck together. I just laughed and walked away. Definitely plan on trying again! Your videos are aleays so good. Will rewatch and give it a go!

Ha, that sounds like my first few experiments with wafer paper! Yeah, it definitely takes practice to figure out how much moisture to apply to the petals -- and it's not nearly as much as you'd think! I find it helpful to use a flat wide brush, and to wipe off as much of the conditioning liquid as I can onto a piece of paper towel first, and THEN moisten the wafer paper petal. Good luck and keep trying! It'll click for ya soon. :)

Thanks for your beautiful video ..but Why do my petals crack when I pressed them in the viner?
@HoneyCrumb

You're welcome! If your petals are cracking, it could be a combination of factors, or just one main factor. If your wafer paper isn't fresh, or hasn't been stored in an airtight bag, it could be too dry and brittle to use for flowers. Wafer paper should be stored in the same way as any sugar sheet, or gumpaste, or fondant -- i.e. well sealed and protected from air! The other factor could be that your climate or work environment is quite dry (air-conditioned?) and you aren't using enough glycerine in your conditioner. And finally, you might be applying too much pressure with your veiner, or using too much cornstarch (which dries out the paper quickly). Don't worry, it'll get better as you practice and get a feel for the medium. I had lots of cracked petals in the beginning, when I was first experimenting with wafer paper and getting to know its limits.

@@jrm-eg9xr You're most welcome! So yeah, you'll definitely want to add some extra glycerine to your water, to make the "conditioner" for the petals. And, definitely store your wafer paper in an air-tight bag (and press any extra air out of it before sealing the bag shut). Be very conservative with any cornstarch you use on the petals. And, just keep practicing, you'll figure out the right balance as you go.
