John was perfect for this interpretation. The emotions and dynamics require a special mix of talents. Much more interesting than the xxxths version of the same a la Met.

@@amaxamon don’t worry. After watching it I ended up buying my much preferred 1990’s met production. I haven’t even finished watching this one

@@JacobMinger Good job! The Met 1990 Ring really is the benchmark. Sure, it’s old-fashioned, but there are no directorial quirks, and the singers are really top-notch. The only exception for me was (heresy!) Jessye Norman, who of course sang beautifully. But the idea of her being a poor abused damsel is too ludicrous to take seriously. It’s hard to imagine that Siegmund got the chance to even touch her.

Tomlinson was a very fine Wotan, but he’s right when he said James Morris was more suited to the role. Tomlinson is fine, but Morris was the benchmark for me.
