In this Don't Starve theory video, I discuss Wagstaff's evil nature.
At a glance, he merely looks like a wizened old man of science - hardly anything out of the ordinary. But, taking a closer look at some of his quotes, Wagstaff clearly has some darker motivations... what is he truly up to?
Wagstaff is one of Don't Starve's newest playable characters, being shipped alongside the Hamlet DLC. Wagstaff also happens to have some of the most intriguing and thought-provoking quotes in the entirety of Don't Starve. By reading through them one can determine that Wagstaff is... not who he appears to be at surface level. At a glance he merely looks like an old scientist who was dragged into the constant for... whatever reason. Maybe he too was enticed by Maxwell, either in the pursuit of knowledge or some other valuable commodity, like the other characters were. In the very least, he certainly doesn't originate from inside the constant itself, like Wilba, Wortox, and Wormwood appear to.
Instead, Wagstaff seems to be a unique case in terms of his residence in the constant. While playing as him you may have noticed that he begins to distort, an effect that increases in intensity the lower his health. The closer to death Wagstaff becomes, the cracklier his image appears, and the more unstable his voice grows. In the game's files this process is referred to as 'outofworldprojection.' Which is certainly an interesting name... what if wagstaff's presence in the don't starve world is actually a metaphysical projection rather than him himself? Furthering this, in the Hamlet roadmap wagstaff was described as a "mysterious inventor who finds himself exactly where he wanted to be," implying that he actually fully intends to reside in the constant in one form or another. It certainly adds up, explaining why many of Wagstaff's quotes for horrible beasts show wonder and admiration instead of fear or intentions of self-preservation.
We also know for certain that Wagstaff has the intellectual capability to project himself in such a manner. Unlike Wilson, Wagstaff is a successful scientist. A snippet of canon revealed by one of the developers (if only things were so simple nowadays) says that Wagstaff is the founder of the Voxola Radio company, and was the inventor of the Voxola PR-76, a device which Maxwell used to communicate with Wilson and possibly others. The voxolas clearly possessed some sort of magical ability - whether this was intentional on Wagstaff's part is unknown. This knowledge ties in with the events depicted in Winona's origin trailer - in it, a mysterious figure falls through a portal, causing the Voxola factory to go up in flames. This figure is all but confirmed to be Wagstaff himself, as we know that he disappears on the night of the fire, and also appears to be standing in some sort of administrative or office room.
Furthermore, Wagstaff's inventive intelligence is also reinforced by the fact that be appears to be the inventor of WX-78. Judging by many of his quotes for various objects in the world, as well as WX-78 himself on the nightmare throne, Wagstaff clearly has some sort of relationship with the robot. WX-78 even has some quotes that back this up.

Upon rewatching, it turns out I wasn't very clear on certain points throughout the video. To clarify: - When Wagstaff examines the Aporkalypse Calendar I assumed he was referring to the normal world, and not the constant. This is apparent to me as Wagstaff never refers to the Constant as 'the world,' rather as 'here' or similar, as though he is observing it. - Second, I guessed that Wagstaff would be _harnessing_ the Aporkalypse Calendar's power to end his world, as opposed to just using it there and then. As far as we know the Aporkalypse Calendar only affects the plateau area of the Constant, where Hamlet takes place, so I always imagined Wagstaff had other plans for the power which it contained.

Also when he examines a empty throne he implies he intends to use it to open a portal to real world and thus transport his discoveries and the resources of the constant to it.

*My thoughts:* Wagstaff doesn't necessarily want to destroy the world out of overtly evil intent. His "maybe I can make the world end sooner" line seems to me to represent a detached mode of thought that sees both Earth and the constant as testing grounds to satisfy his apparent "intellect above morals". This is further evidenced by his lines for inspecting the Hunger Belt and Dark Sword. For Wagstaff, solving world hunger probably isn't a noble goal of helping others; It's a problem that no one else can solve that he could harnessing NMF. And use of new technologies in military applications is an inevitable, if tragic, progression of science, wherein superior technologies stand a great chance of weeding out the "inferior" elements of any world. I don't know what he thinks of the ancients, but his non-chalant attitude toward such use shows he has no concerns over the consequences of society using NMF, be they good or ill. Wagstaff's fascination with scientific possibility can be described as a "pure, child-like cruelty" that comes with the lack of a moral compass, seeing even the Aporkalypse, it's calendar, and the lives of those around them as a system to be analyzed and utilized without hesitation.

Another thing, if he did create WX-78, what is one of wx’s main goals? Genocide and how he hates “fleshlings” and finds them useless and inferior. To me that sounds like a beginning to an uprising of sorts. So wag staff is even worse than he seems if that’s true.

Maybe he is just curious about if the calendar can make the world end sooner? If I saw a device that can end the world, I know most people would be curious if it actually works, but too scared to try it.

I think Wagstaff is evil in a really neutral way. Which is even scarier I think, because I think he just does things just because he can. Should you do weapons in the normal world with dark fuel? Probably not. But does he care? Nah. The same way he didn't care when he made a fully alive robot, but didn't bother to give him an empathy module. In Wagstaff's mind, it doesn't matter if his creations destroy the world (example : calendar quote) or if he dies in the process, he just want to see if his theory will work at the end and see his curiosity satiated. He's a great character, really grey morally, and that's fun!

I don't think Wagstaff is striving for ruling the world but rather using it as a subject for all his ideas/experiments. It could be that he's some sort of mad scientist who has done awful or questionable things back in his world. His mind is corrupted with wonderment and possibilities for what the world can be.

something worth noting about Wagstaff's interest in militant application's is that Don't starve takes place right after World War one. We know the game takes place in the early 1900s, and looking at the story timeline on the wiki (which admitedly isn't fully cited) Wagstaff's capture occurs in 1919, this means that it could take place anywhen between 2-13 months after the end of the war. So even though that The great war was, at the time, considered "The War to end all Wars", the fact that it was still fresh in people's minds, and the fact that tensions where still probably fairly high during that time, means that nearly anyone would be interested in weaponization Infact, I'd also wager that Wagstaff was potentally enlisted/volenteered to help design weapons for the war effort, as not only is he incredably smart, but Albert Einstein, who Wagstaff definitly draws inspiration from, helped in designing the nuclear bomb.

Well what if wes is also a robot, just one without a voicebox. He was invented by a certain old man to do evil under the guise of a french mime, however wes gained sentience and didn't want to be evil. So he planned to act as his creator intended till he could find an escape, eventually he found the portal blueprints, due to his computer brain he could easily put it together and then he escaped to the constant. However, going through that portal changed him, he forgot all about being good and reverted back to the evil mime his creator had made, but he soon realized he was weak and frail, he needed others to do the work for him. The other survivors were too smart for that, and that's when he found moleworms, mindless creatures taught to steal would be the perfect soldiers for his army, not to mention there were thousands. So now he waits, for the right time to strike.

The static when he is in low health reminds me of old film static, which suggests he might be using an old film camera to project himself. What I don't understand is why his projection needs to eat and why he needs to make a projection in the first place? He is already in the Constant physically so it seems kind of redundant. I believe he projects himself in the world because of his physique. This is debunked because of the fact that Wickerbottom is old and is able to walk around just fine like the other characters but there is one thing that sets her apart from Wagstaff. Wagstaff doesn't have any supernatural powers compared to the other characters. All the characters, except Wilson, all have some kind of perk that can be considered supernatural. Wickerbottom's books can do magic, Wolfgang can become twice as strong by eating large amounts of food etc. I believe that upon entering the Constant you have the chance to be given powers as well as physical improvements through some unknown means. This explains how characters are able to take two hits without armor from giants like Deerclops. Wagstaff simply got the short end of the stick, he only had his intelligience to help him. He decided by then to transport his consciousness into a much better form, some kind of advance physical projection. This is why Wagstaff is a projection. Also the stuff about him being possibly a mad, evil scientist. It's probably just him joking around

From the looks of it, nearly all of the characters likely entered the constant when coming into contact with one of those radios. We can see that Wilson and Walter were thrown into the constant one way or another after coming into contact with a radio. Perhaps Wagstaff had some kind of connection with Maxwell, because how else would Maxwell have been able to speak with Wilson?

Both Wigfrid and Warly get into the Constant through gramophone. Maxwell has similar gramophone, which is implied to be Wagstaff's creation. We know that Winona was looking for her sister and that people noticed the strange disapearences. She most likely found out about Voxola because all missing people had a Voxola gramophone/radio.

Man, I would like to see Wagstaff as some sort of new antagonist in DST. Could be a interesting mechanical boss boss fight probably somewhere in the caves. And another thing to support your theory: Wagstaff also knows what the Nightmare throne is and what it's capable of ( he says something like: " At last, the throne that can link world's ! " or something ), the only characters with such level of knowledge are Maxwell, Charlie and Battlemaster Pugna ( and probably Wilson since he sat on the throne). I truly believe Wagstaff's story will be quite interesting if not tragic.

Wagstaff can be seen in the new animation made for the Webber update. He obviously hasn't been forgotten and is important to the story, so why is he not playable? Could it be that because he is a projection, he can't have a ghost unlike all the other characters when they die.

the Animation from Webber is Talking Place in the Real World. So wagstaff have to Journey in the constant before, to get this Spider. And he also have to know a way out bcs of that.

And, the divining rod is used to find the pieces of the Teleportato in adventure mode... perhaps Wagstaff does have some kind of connection to Maxwell, because how else would Maxwell have been able to get into contact with Wilson?

coming back to this after the new DST beta content-- this theory has some more ground to work with supporting Wagstaff's entirely scientific approach to the horrors of the constant. I think he wants to bring this magic and technology into the real world

With helps of WX, Wortox and Wurt, we discover that, WX hates his creator, Wagstaff transports things from Earth to Constant and from Constant to Earth, and he is probally trying to have the power of the moon to battle against the shadows, and become the new king of the shadows, and therefore the king of the Constant, he also says about the Nightmare Throne it's what connects the Constant to Earth, and how in new beta he just disappears, we can assume, he is preparing himself, to when comes the time to conquer the Constant and makes Constant and Earth one thing, then rule about both as the new King of the earth, almost a God.

Wagstaff is an inventor he wants to do what no one has done before whatever it is or takes, he doesn't seem to care about it being good or bad, he just wants to be remembered and ''revolutionize the world'' is the goal of most scientist/inventors in coclusion: Wagstaff could be potentially bad, but also good, he really just wants to invent and make scientific progress towards humanity

Wagstaff is that kind of person who would achieve his purpose in any means. What he is pursuing is dangerous but he has the ability to deal with it. For those who don't, however, he doesn't mind involving them in the case, as long as it fits his interest (unlike Wanda, who is also investigating a mysterious power but all alone). Because ethics don't contain a person like him. Hazard to others never concerns Wagstaff. All the time, Wagstaff is using ignorant survivors to conduct his crazy experiments, taking advantages of them, and meanwhile he brings them closer and closer to the danger they don't know.

I don't think his intentions lie within helping or destroying the world, but rather to create and discover practical applications for suitable scenarios. All he wants is the wonder and glory of discovering, solving, and creating solutions to anything. he doesn't much care for the big picture, if anything he laughs at the idea as if to mock at its unimportance in his eyes.

I think he might have learned some information about the constant from WX-78. If he can make a projection capable of discovering I believe he could've put some sort of video-receiving technology in WX, like a TV signal directed from the eyes.

So wait,if Wagstaff is actually the person that made Wx-78 or had a hand in there creation did he program him to be a ruthless killing machine on purpose? Or maybe was it simply just an experiment to send him in first to see how it goes,then go in later. But only thing that destroys this theory of mine is that when he sees Wx-78 he's suprised. Maybe because he didn't expect him to last that long?

What if Wagstaff has some sort of VR system hooked up to him? And it projects him into the constant somehow, as well as how it keeps him from being trapped permanently. An example could be like he vanishes from the throne when someone else comes to it. He just disconnects from the device when he is done ruling the constant for the day. It might explain how he distorts and such.

I think "maybe I could make the world end sooner" is less him wanting destruction, but him questioning the logic like with many other objects. He's more saying "if it works one way, I wonder if the other is true"

i recently watched a video that showed that if you rescue maxwell as wagstaff and then go back to the throne as maxwell wagstaff is nowhere to be seen why may implie that wagstaff is just really using a projection of himself to get into the constantand he didnt actually go into the constant

I am most certain he is a projection of his self as his voice lines are all very observative and calm, it's like as if he is playing the game as a player just like we do. This is further supported as he manipulated his way in to dst and he is the only character seen to have control over his body instead of being player controlled. And his goal to destroy this world probably refers to the constant instead of the real world and has something to do with the power of the moon. Also Wx-78 is now more likely to be made by Wagstaff as he is also very interested and fond of the moon.

1. Perhaps wagstaff was thinking that since nightmare fuel already has weapon based utility, maybe he could try to harness it for other weapon design, such as perhaps making a sort of ranged weaponry capable of using the fuel as ammunition, and i think the fuel would be weightless so the fuel ammo wouldn't have to fight gravity, making it perfect for very long ranged stots since you just have to line it up, dont have to adjust for gravity or anything 2. Perhaps that end the world sooner dialogue was in reference to the constance, the constant? I get the name confused, seeing as to how he might have noticed that the constant or people from it keep pulling things into it, and when this happens it causes some rather catastrophic effects on the earth, which could be one of many reasons why he sent a projection there and not his true self, so he could have been thinking "hey, this counts down to the end of this fascinating yet dangerous place, maybe i can end it sooner to try and prevent any further calamities back home

I think he could just mean that he will rescue everyone, then he will end the constant, so no more people will fall into it, and nightmare fuel may just be his way of doing it, if it has enough power to keep someone there, (on the throne), then it should have enough power to keep people out, also, he could just be fascinated about the dark swords power since some form of improved version or weapon similar may be able to end the constant.

The DS lore is so interesting. Many things are unknown, but at the same time that leaves a lot of space for your own imagination. You can make up stories for your characters to make playthroughs more interesting.
