Wah pedal on harp is insane. Today we learned that envelope filter pedals are just boneless wah wah pedals. Join us as we try the JAM wah, Crybaby wah, and a bunch of other filter pedals on harp.

I like to imagine a scenario, in which, I walk into my local guitar store and Emily is an employee. She then proceeds to demo stuff for me on harp, makes me reconsider playing guitar, and, due to charming me with her "low pressure" off-beat humorous sales tactics, I find myself in the parking lot, an hour later, trying to stuff a harp and a bunch of pedals into my car, when all I came down for was strings.

@@emilyharpist Oh fuck woman, don't stop doing what you're doing! It took me five minutes to type this, because you're response made me laugh so hard that I couldn't hit the right keys. Yeah, you'd probably tell me the harp played like buttah, that it was the harp equivalent weight-wise of a Thinline Tele, and then upsell me on "special" patch cables, cuz harps have an "advanced" electronics system that "dont take regular cables, see". I look forward to more "experts" (read: neighbours that agreed to do it because your sandwiches "taste better than what Bonnie makes"). I agree with the second part, that's typically how I use a wah. Try to sweep as slowly as I can usually using the higher end of the sweep more often than the lower. Supposedly you can adjust that with trim pots or something similar on the inside of some wahs, which I've done, since I don't incorporate that Funk/porn sound that everyone seems to immediately bust out the second they start playing a wah.

Yeah I totally get that. I am by no means a pro or even an intermediate level guitarist, but I like to have fun while playing. Bought myself a CryBaby when I first started, and quickly found myself barely rocking it, and doing so as slow as possible. I personally like the mid to high range because it kind of "screams" if that makes any sense. I love how Adam Jones from Tool gently phases his wah and often holds it at the mids for a while before rocking back or forth. Makes you forget he's using a wah for a second.

It feels like the other is outputting clean harp with a wah filter while the crybaby sounds like it is shaping the whole tone more. I have the mooer mini wah and I feel like it has that same filter effect. I always feel like the crybaby effects the whole output unlike any other wah.

The harp is by its nature a melodic instrument, it made me wonder if you have ever approached it as one would a rhythm guitar. The string muting is what made me think of this. Great video!
@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785
@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 2 жыл бұрын
String muting is an easy technique that requires no fancy technology....but when combined together with what's essentially an audio frequency modulator/wah pedal, allows for a plethora of interesting sounds.

You should also try a Morley wah, which uses an optical sensor instead of a worm and gear on a pot. It's the smoothest and doesn't get dirty and noisy and has the longest frequency sweep

If you want to explore Wah more, try the sonuus Wahoo. It is a analogue 2 Filter Wah which is completely free programmable in the ranges and peaks you want to have. So you could customize your wah perfectly towards the needs of a harp. As far as I know it is the king of wahs, when it comes to versatility and in my opinion sound. This is more a fully equipped multimode dual filter of a synth than merely a wah pedal. Now i stop advertising, ;) Have lots of fun in doing what you are doing Greetings from Germany

Wow that sounds SUPER cool! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of that before! I’m definitely going to look into that one, the range is a big factor when it comes to harp! The Wahcko does a great job at range selection, but this might be amazing!

Awesome my Hendrix Fuzz Wah ( 16 DB dialable boost ) is just way too muddy and then shrill it's ok for some things....but I tend to think one part is wrong...it's too wide a sweep and horrid at extremes with a tiny sweet spot.

The wah and filter combo adds so much more atmospheric depth to the harp. A harp on its own isolated is beautiful but I feel like the pedals create a fuller sounding musical piece (layered sounds ) in a live setting rather than relying on layering via multi recording/looping. TLDR this is a game changer for the sounds and I LOVE IT!!!

Hey Emily, you should try putting your harp through a UniVibe pedal, the UniVibe pedal is an old-school Phaser and Vibrato effect that has a speed control foot pedal that plugs into it, you can play notes on your harp and then use the speed control foot pedal to vary the effect speed on the fly as you play, you can get some really nice watery sounds from it.

I thought the Crybaby's tone was a little better, honestly, but you aren't wrong about them feeling and sounding clunky. The mechanics of the Crybaby work, but that's about all you can say positive about them. They're mechanically noisy, and yeah, they even kind of just "feel" clunky. I thought it sounded amazing with the harp.

Sounds nice on a harp. Have you ever ran your harp through a Leslie cabinet? They are used in tandem with a Hammond B3 organ. You can mic it for stereo and there is a foot pedal you use to change the rotating speaker and horn to a fast or slow speed. I bet it would sound great! ✌️😎🎶

I love watching videos like this that explore possibilities in sound. Wah seems like a no-brainer on harp now. It would be cool to hear a direct line comparison without the room sound, especially on the waka-waka-chaka-chaka kind of stuff you liked better on the cry baby than the wah. Isolating the sound from the wah without the room noise created by those fast, multiple string strokes on harp would be pretty cool to hear.

It's so fun watching you discover all these cool gadgets for your harp. I've been a guitar player and gadget guy since 1982 and honestly if I spent as much time practicing my instrument as I do playing around with guitar pedals and multi-effect units, I'd be pretty damn good by now instead of just a hobbyist, but it wouldn't be nearly as fun. Keep exploring the cool gear. I love your reaction to the new sounds. It is obvious you've already done all the practicing necessary to master the instrument anyways, so you might as well have fun being creative with some new sounds.
