Wiki:
Bambi is a 1942 American animated film produced by Walt Disney and based on the book Bambi: A Life in the Woods by Austrian author Felix Salten. The fifth film in the Disney Animated Canon, it was released by RKO Radio Pictures on August 21, 1942, during World War II. It is the last Disney animated film to be in a single-narrative format until nearly eight years later with Cinderella due to the decrease of resources in World War II causing the studio to make "package features" to stay the studio afloat for financial reasons.
Plot (IMDB):
It's spring, and all the animals of the forest are excited by the forest's latest birth, a buck fawn his mother has named Bambi. The animals are more excited than usual as Bambi's lineage means he will inherit the title of prince of the forest. Along with his mother, Bambi navigates through life with the help of his similarly aged friends, Thumper, a rabbit kit who needs to be continually reminded by his mother of all the lessons his father has taught him about how to live as a rabbit properly, and Flower, a skunk kit who likes his name. As different animals, they have their own issues and challenges which may not translate to the others. Being similarly aged, Bambi, Thumper and Flower may have to experience the uncharted phases of their lives without the knowledge or wisdom unless gleaned from those who have gone through them before. Bambi has to learn early that the lives of deer and of many of the other forest animals are not without their inherent dangers, for deer especially in the beautiful albeit exposed meadow. Bambi will also find that his ascension to prince of the forest is not a guarantee as other buck deer and situations may threaten that ascension.

When grass can't be found, deer eat bark. The book was written as anti-hunting and immediately got all sorts of flack. "The Great Stag" is an amazing character...and Bambi's future. The book has a better ending, with Bambi, alone, meeting his son and Bambi having no idea what he looks like...just like his dad, the "eternal" Great Stag of the Forest.

Fun fact When bambi and his mother escaped hunters, bambi did asked what was it, mother said "man was in the forest" that's not just a thing in movie, it's an actual quote, well back then, you see when movie was in production, sometimes animators would goof around, but whenever walt enters, someone would say "man is in the forest!"

27:27 That look Faline gave the other deer always made me think of this scenario if they were human: They went on one date, she had a really bad time through the whole dinner, he walked her back home unable to see that she was just looking at the ground and was hardly talking to him, he asks when he'll pick her up of the next date, she tells him that she doesn't think that would be a good idea and that she doesn't think they should see each other again like that, he gets really aggressive really quickly and she only just manages to shut and lock the door in time, after which he storms off. That look just seemed to say either "What are you doing here?" or "I told you, I didn't want to see you again."

First bambi books were published by Felix (forgot last name) in europe, so basically bambi was originally going to be a roedeer instead of a whitetailed we see in the movie, but disney adapted it to be in America not europe, oh Yea if they were roedeers, bambi, as well as other fawns would have been more cuter than current designs

i can't wait for this! i loved bambi! 02:20 that 'congratulations dear' kinda reminded me of mrs doubtfire!😂its cool how walt brought animals into the studios! flower was always my fave character! 😂🦨if u do ever elt a fox in the house ben, you better video it!! i didnt know that fact about the nazis and the original book! i remember hearing the fact about how the voice actor for thumper was chosen! it was really intereasting! kinda glad eiz brought it up! i was very curious i noticed that lion king contrast too! 12:02 idk why but those leaps reminded me of your song tier list for the princesses and talking about pocahontas and john smith leaping in colours of the wind. do u think it would count as recycled animation? 12:54 another similarity to lion king! i always felt sad when bambi s mum died, i found it to be a very powerful scene, also i had no idea the owl's name is 'friend owl' 😂i cant believe i forgot! at first i was always shocked at such a huge time jump after his mother died but it was interesting to see how it made them change! i agree about the flower animation when he falls! it was funny to see but very different to the film's vibe! 25:02 😂😂red flag indeed! 😅i have to say this and sleeping beauty have some of my favourite classical animation! the other dear sort of reminds me of that guy in ichabod and mr toad when he is stealing bambi's girl, i think u know who im talking about ben? the village guy he was kinda like gaston i have to say i love that scene of the the deers skipping with those colourful leaves! i do like pocahontas a lot but i guess lion king was more popular! i didnt know it was called bambi in africa! it certainly did take a turn when the bird died b ut it was a very powerful moment! this really is like lion king! one parent dies, there was that supernatural bit with his dad. he and his lover both had a child, yiu see a time jump from childhood to adulthood! there are lots of similarities! thats unfortunate to hear about bambi's author, i agree that atleast his legacy lives on, also while we talk about how dark the movie cvan be im kinda expecting a love action at this rate! i really enjoyed that reaction! and congrats on finishing the olden era! my fave wartime era movie is definitly ichabod and mr toad! i look forward to seeing both your thoughts on them! ♥

Thanks for all your thoughts Syed, hopefully I’ll respond to all of them! Mrs Doubtfire is one of our favourites! So love that similarity! 😂 And I share the house so wouldn’t actually let the fox in (although when we are rich youtubers and I have my own house it will be like that scene from enchanted with all the animals helping me do the house work) Love that you remembered the leaps from colours of the wind…. John Smith was soooo invested! 😂 And we did talk about all the reused animation in this film but decided to cut it in the end, so will try n talk about it when we start seeing it in the other movies… let’s say the deers leaping was just inspiration for John Smith 😂 It’s actually crazy how many similarities it has with the Lion King but I’d never noticed the fur colours before, so we’ll done to you and Edz! And I know exactly who you are talking about in Ichabod! He has a song and everything 😅 And we will defo have a live action of this one! Kinda interested to know how much of the story they would keep the same! Thanks for the well thought out comment Syed! Always love reading them!! See you next time 🙌✌️✌️

I wonder if they'll have some sort of similar elements in the sequel! John Smith certainly was dedicated when it came to those leaps! Some debate and confusion over what hinting laws were implemented when and where, but apparently nowadays at least those wouldn't have been classified as hunters but as poachers because nowadays at least it's illegal to hunt the doe (female deer) and baby deers otherwise that'll risk killing off all the deer in total. Also apparently professional hunters wouldn't leave their fires unattended like that.

I wonder what they'd do with Roald Dahl's 'The Magic Finger' story - a man and his two sons love to go hunting birds and deer but do so for sport rather than for food, and it upsets the girl who lives next door to them so much that she puts "the magic finger on them all" (energy comes out of her finger when something makes her angry and upset) so when they wake up the next day they've shrunk and have wings instead of arms. Only thought of it because what pushed her over the edge was the sight of them coming back "carrying a lovely young deer".

Apparently during the fire scene Bambi was going to actually see 'Man' - but dead. The idea being that a human was shot by accident or passed out because of the fire. There's rough drawings somewhere of a hand holding onto a gun. I think in the book the Great Prince shows Bambi a dead human before he himself dies because throughout the book the animals all fear 'Man' but see 'Man' as something all powerful, almost godlike, something that cannot be stopped (they call a dog a traitor, there's one animal who was injured and nursed back to health by a human and who was given a tag that he thought would protect him from humans but was still killed by one, and when Bambi's mother is shot there's a sound that might have been laughter - 'Ho! Ho! Ho! Ho!' but I guess could have been something like a gunfire). The Great Prince shows Bambi the sight of a dead human to show him that man is not in fact invincible and that he dies as they do as well. I guess that was the idea behind showing the hand of a dead human, to give some sort of image behind 'Man' - and you can sort of get it, the feeling of near horror of seeing something that you thought as all powerful is in fact mortal. Guess it didn't quite work out, some ideas and stories don't.

Just found your channel. You guys are pretty entertaining. Would love to eventually see a reaction to Bambi 2. I'm assuming Ben has seen it already of course. But it follows the time just after Bambi's mom died and we get to see him grow up with his dad. I personally think it's a really sweet movie and very pretty.

Fun fact Walt originally wanted to include the scene where bambi's mother being shot, with either poachers taking her or Bambi finding it idk, but his daughter didn't wanted bambi's mother to die so she begged him, but he wanted to make the film based on the book, smart move tough not including her dying on screen

34:21 Funny, just came from watching a movie called 'Home of the Brave' from 1947 where a doctor's telling a patient to 'get up and walk' - went on a mission to an island, lots of things happened that I can't say because of spoilers, but the reason why he can't walk is because of psychological reasons rather than physical reasons. Surprisingly good movie. In the case of Bambi here I think the idea is that Bambi's father wants to help him get up, but he's stopping himself from doing so because he knows that if his son doesn't learn to pick himself back up again he never will learn, and that even if he didn't die that day because he was helped he might die another day because he didn't know how to do it himself.

Bambi was also dedicated to children’s hospitals and children’s libraries of which an amount of the proceeds went into donation. I’m early works the dedication is written before the title of the film- in later works it appears as an end credits notation so many viewers walked away before seeing where the proceeds went. A lot of the early films had these dedications but Disney always highlighted it in the 1920-1950s era while Walt was alive, it was in cursive across the entire screen you read it and then you were able to watch the movie you had to recognize that you as a viewer contributed to charity through your act of watching a random movie. He had POS qualities but the donations and contributions to charity were actually a major factor in his success at the time. Not only is a movie a recreational expense but there’s not guilt that you’re taking the day off or hours off to relax and sit back and enjoy yourself you know that even in your free time it was meaningful and out of your relaxation there was someone else (some cancer ridden kid) being helped. This is more then just an actor giving some money to charity after a movie - this was the whole movie, every worker and every individual who was spending time helping to create the film and every individual who saw the film as an audience member to donate back to the community especially to the children. Modern Disney films don’t even acknowledge that this happened or was a major theme to all of their future works I think the lack of dedication shows how the company lost sight of its original intentions. It’s not just telling a family story which adults or kids can waste time on it’s effort it’s labor it’s enjoying something random and feeling good about that time spent. Modern movies you’re down 20$-40$ and regretting even walking into the theaters if the film was bad - even if it’s a shitty film if I knew 40-60% of that ticket was going to charity I don’t think I would care I’d feel fine about watching some diy cheap or indie film. The fact that they’re objectively good movies considering their title of golden era it’s amazing that they were such high quality available to the public and encouraged kind actions and charitable events.

Alright Ill say some facts but not in seperate 1st:faline originally in book has a twin brother gobo. Gobo was legit best friend towards bambi, he was also good friends with one young doe marena, old one named nettla and including two other males karus and ronno(buck he fought in the movie). In winter he as well as other fawns in thte herd grew up in the teenage world, also bambi, gobo, karus and ronno grew little antlers then. Bambi's mother died to, gobo also dissapeard then assuming to be dead, but he retutrned beacuse he was injured but was saved by hunter and raised in captivity. He reunited with Bambi and others when hunters appeard again, he died tried to go friendly towards hunters 2nd:Bambi in book is totally different species of deer. Maybe less known in usa but we'll known in europe, bambi in book is a roedeer, a very common deer species to be seen, after fallow and red deer. 3d:in movie all animals gathered to greet the young fawn, but in the book only one who greeted was the magpie 4th:in book Durning fire there was a carcass of a human while bambi and great prince passed, prince said "not even humans are strongest in the world" or smth like that 4th:in book where dogs were attacked, some were distracted by a fox that was begging for its live, while other forest kritters insulted dogs that they are killing one of their own, bur dogs didnt cared

I once read a copy of Bambi that was published before Walt Disney had even created Mickey Mouse or Oswald the Lucky Rabbit or his earliest creation the Alice series which featured a real life little girl set in an animated world. The author Felix Santon wrote about the actual reality of animal life with some animals being killed and eaten by other animals. Walt Disney change this by making “man” as the only danger that the animals faced. In the movie Bambi is an only child. In the book Bambi has a twin named Gobi I believe it was. Gobi was described as being weaker than Bambi and falls behind the family the first time the family encounters humans. I forgot how exactly the book went but I think Gobi was injured and captured alive by a human who takes Gobi home and over time heals his/her injuries. (Sorry I don’t remember if Gobi was a male or a female.) After living with the humans for at least a year or more Gobi is released by the humans and makes his/her way back to the other animals. Gobi finds the way the other animals live is too difficult. He/She tries to convince the other animals that humans are gods and if the animals would just worship and obey humans that they would provide the animals with everything they need and they would never be hungry during the winter months. Gobi approaches a random human in the area and is immediately shot and killed by this human. As in the movie the book has the forest being burned down by humans. However in the book after all the fires are out (forgot how) Bambi’s father has him come with him to the humans campground. Bambi is extremely nervous about going to such a place but goes because he trusts his father. There they find all the humans dead from shooting each other in some arguments. Bambi’s father tells him that humans were just mortals like any other living creature and should not be thought of as gods by the other animals and certainly should not be worshipped by the other animals. I understand the changes that Walt Disney made the movie and can agree with them.

Correction: Bambi actually came out in English after Mickey Mouse was created. I could be mistaken but I think it might have been the original German language version that was published before Walt Disney created his Alice series.

Great to see that Ediz turned around for this movie towards the second half. I think it´s stunning and beautiful a complete movie, perfect balance of what it represent with the circle of life for a deer. Sure hunters hated it but I think it was important to bring appreciation for animals. So sad about the autor and everything around this. I do wanna find the book and read it. It´s fun to look up this animated movies based on books and read the sourcematerial. I have so far read Jurassic Park and Secret of NIMH. I wanna read the books that The Black Couldron was based on. What I think is funny is that everyone when referencing Bambi call it cutise all the way through like harmless when it´s known for being traumatic for children when Bambi´s mom dies and I mean when he is an adult he is´t harmless, he tackles a rival deer, hold of a dozen dogs and gets shot and stands up again. What is a fun fact is Bambi the only Disney character who gets shoot and live through it? Oh wait John Smith from Pocahontas.

While most people in that time era probably hated the movies due to the hunting sport game, the message Walt was going for was also about Forest fires and how most careless people cause it by leaving their camp fire untended and not properly fully put out

Read around halfway of the original book and lemme tell you, it's very depressing. No idea about the political comentary since I'm not good at catching those but It's so sad. On another note, Bambi II is pretty good, I think is one of the best, if not "the" best, disney movie sequel
