In this video I’d like to talk about how you can have a “new boat”, but not have to pay new boat prices.
What’s up everyone? In this video I’ll share the costs of rebuilding an older hull vs buying a new boat with similar setup. There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a new boat, but you do have to be prepared to drop quite a bit of money. Rebuilding an older hull is a great way to save some money or spend some money in the right ways to setup a hull designed just for you.
Anytime I take my boat out, I get a lot of looks and questions about it. Everyone is typically stunned when I tell them it’s a 1980. I’ve done quite a bit of modifications to the boat to set it up for the way I like to fish. So with that being said there were a lot of costs that came into play to make this a truly one of a kind Aquasport FOR ME. I could have redone my boat and spent about half of what I did to have a very nice looking vessel, but this was my chance to rig the boat exactly how I wanted it. You do not have to get as in depth or go crazy on a restoration as I did on my build, but I’ll show you all the mods done to my Aquasport and I’ll be as transparent as possible in the costs associated with it. I’ll also share links in the description to the places that did all my work in case you’d like to check them out.
So in my opinion, it’s definitely worth restoring an older boat vs buying a new one.
I was on the higher end of a restoration cost because of how I chose to rig the boat. I could have chosen to simply redo the floor, gas tank because it had some pitting, paint it, keep it single station and even repower and I would have come in at around 45k to make this boat like new.
Some other ways I could have also saved money on my build are that I could have reused some of the equipment I had before. I could have done some of the work myself, but I don’t have time to do that. I had all work done at reputable places which guarantee their work and that already seems to have been a great choice for me. I had an issue with the control module for the throttle which didn’t allow me to turn on the boat. I dropped off the boat with Jack and he had me back on the water in no-time.
Hope you all enjoyed the video and maybe it helped if you’re deciding whether to restore or purchase a boat. Please remember to like and subscribe. Catch ya on the next one.

Yeah I looked at new boats. The prices were shockung. I pulled my 97 Key West into the barn. Two months later I pulled it out better than new. Every hose, fitting, pump and wire in the boat was new and done right. I even added custom fiberglass fish boxes and seating improvements. I'm very happy with my decision and i still have no box payment.

I don’t have the time between work and boating to do a complete overhaul of a boat just to get it for a little less. And I sure as hell am not waiting months to years to complete it when I have a brand new boat with warranty on everything moving part. If this was the case more people would do it instead of letting them rot in their yards

I am currently restoring a 1997 19' CC Trophy. I have the wiring complete for all her electronics. I put new bilge pumps in new fish finder and interior lighting. New cooler, cooler cushion and deck mounts in front the CC. I rebuilt the controls and bought new cover and handle for it. I have mr steering lubricated and it now works great. The hull and interior are in great shape and I've actually been below the deck inside the hull throught the hatch under the CC. All stringers are still solid .when I wash her she shines up like a new boat. My next step is to grind out some spider cracks and some stress cracks on the side of the top of rail and fill and re gel coat. After that it's just painting the deck buffing the hull and ordering some cushions for the seats and front bow. This boat will mostly be used in large lakes in Florida. Occasionally going to the intercoastal and in shore fishing shrimping and partying 😂. After being caught in a Florida thunderstorm in a 19' Lund Tyee and watching the bilge struggle to keep up with the ridiculous amount of water coming in I bought a self bailing deck and put two 11000 gallon bilge in it and I'm adding a third below the CC in the center of the hull. Lake George can get nasty fast with 6' waves and brutal winds in a thunderstorm. You get that chop it's not like the ocean the waves. It becomes short between intervals and intense like 3 waves at a time. I've seen the temperature drop from 92 degrees to 72 in less than 30 minutes. When you're body is use to 92 and the temperature drops 20 degrees you freeze so bad you can hardly function 😂. We bring rain gear and jackets now on perfectly clear hot days. Here in Florida everything can change on the water in a hurry. Going down means swimming with the alligators.

Watching this video gave me flashbacks , me and my father sold a 22’5 1985 mako we semi restored and now watching this makes me regret It. all we needed was to re-modernize the boat and repower.. miss that boat every single day, I love that you made it your way and exactly how you wanted it maybe to people you overpayed but the sentimental value of a boat owned by your father and you going out your way to keep it and make it your way tops it off. Props to you bro 👍👍

I was initially on the fence about restoring or getting something bigger. I didn’t want to regret selling it which is why I chose to restore. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. No lie, with the mods I did I actually have more space than some of my friends 25-27 foot boats. It’s unreal how much sentimental value boats can have though. One would never think it, but there are so many memories attached

Aqua sport are good, solid hulls. That is one beautiful restoration my friend, and you're 💯 right, in a lot of cases, a resto is a cheaper option then new, especially considering customizing it. I did a resto on my dads old 21 CC seaox. Love it. The old mercury 175 black max finally took a dump two years ago and i just slapped a brand new 200 Yamaha on it this year. Lots of work and money, but well worth it. Well done man.

The biggest selling point is to have it set how you like it and i have to say this im not hating just a counter point if i was to start with buying a hull that alone is 8-10k than lets say re engine with a 2020 etech 10-14k depending on power another 70 to set it up exactly like this you’re into the 80-100k range and alot of people i know i would have to finance that money you’re in the same range of what i spent on a brand new 2024 Yamaha 255 fsh where really the only thing that it doesn’t have that i wish it did is that upper helm other than that its all good but the boat is lookin good just a counter point and most people dont even know Yamaha makes center consoles

naturally, you wouldn’t do this to a cheap hull. My family had an 22-2, 1972 vintage with twin 65 Johnson OB’s for power. Loved that boat. it was built like a rock. it was a good candidate for major rebuild/ upgrade. in fact the person who purchased it from us sunk about $10k (in 1980 dollars) and did some upgrading. the new owner (a friend of the family) also enclosed the transom and re powered with a 175 Yamaha on an Armstrong bracket. I was able to keep track of these upgrades over time because the new owner kept the Aquasport 22-2 in the same boathouse as us in a little town south of Houma, LA called Cocodrie. That Aqua-sport is probably still kicking today. I moved away from that area post Katrina. Cocodrie is not this sleepy little Cajun commercial fishing and oil service town anymore either.

It’s awesome that you’ve been able to keep track of the Aquasport throughout the years. And I totally agree with you in regards to not sinking a ton of money on a crappy hull. I chose to rebuild the hull cause like you said, it’s built like a rock. The ride I get as well as the fuel efficiency is excellent.

I will never buy a new boat. I restored my 1st boat last winter and it's better then anything sold new.

Hey 10 grand for a boat, another 10 for a motor and 30 in fiber glass and the like and for 60k you get a lot of boat.

$78k isn't bad for basically a new custom built boat with an older engine. That said, who's got $78k lying around? Far as I know, you can finance a nice boat, but you can't finance a project unless you start getting stupid with HELOCs and personal loans. $78k is getting close to the edge of what I'd consider foolish cash to spend on a depreciating asset when said cash could be in an investment where the return goes towards the payment of a boat. In the end, as long as your bills are paid, your family is fed, and you're happy with what you got, then it's a win. :)

I agree with you! 78k is not chump change to toss around. You have to actively save up for it or, like you mentioned, take out loans in order to get this done. That’s why I tried to mention cheaper options I could have done to save money. This boat definitely had a lot of sentimental value to me which is why I chose to spend the money on it. I’ve known the people that did the work on my boat for years. I’ve seen them do wonders to older boats at fractions of the cost of buying new boats.

Now my question is can you finance a rebuild

To be honest, not 100% sure you can find anybody these days that would finance a rebuild. You’d have to pull a loan elsewhere in order to complete the build.

Thats the good thing about restoring…You can spend as much or as little as you want, but still get a good end product. I spent what I did on this boat because it’s basically turned into a family heirloom. This aquasport has a lot of sentimental value to me and my fam. I had a new boat priced out to get this same setup and it would have cost me 184k.

Beautiful but i would have put twins on it and electric reel outlets.

Only reason I didn’t do twins was because of weight and space on the platform. The single gives me plenty of room to get up unobstructed when we go diving. Reel outlets are beeping installed in a couple of weeks 🤙
