One of my electrical engineer friend just got into watches, and he asked me, "does more jewels mean more energy?" I was confused for a minute, then I realized he thought watches have "joules" I had to give a whole explainer to him on what jewels do.

Is there any way you could interview a mechanical engineer who designs the internal components of mechanical watches? Maybe even quartz watches too? I think that would add an additional factor of “appreciating the craftsmanship” of mechanical watches, by having a different look into how they are designed and ultimately released to the public

You are not wrong but not right either. Only reason why there are (synthetic) rubies are because they are hard and easy to manufacture. The watch will function perfectly normal without rubies but needs shorter service intervals. For example, 1861 caliber only got 17jewels even tho it’s a Chronograph… The watch will function completely ok without any rubies. Please stay away from horology theory of you don’t know them well

And, If my memory serves me well, any mechanical movement can't be functional with less than a minimum of 17 jewels... I'd love❤ having a counterpin jewel on the first escapement wheel, so I'd rather say 18. My bad though, I can barely count up to ten, but when it comes to watches I try to be more catholic than the Pope...
