The Treaty Of Waitangi must be the most sacred, revered and talked about document in New Zealand history.
The drama begins on 3rd of February, 1840 as Busby and Colenso have asked a number of significant Nga Puhi chiefs to converge to discuss the Treaty - but as yet, there is no Treaty. It emerges Hobson has not even begun to write it when he arrives by ship. Meanwhile, Maori leaders try to understand what exactly the British hope to achieve and what advantage there might be in making a pact with the English.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Written by Gavin Strawhan ( This Is Not My Life, Go Girls ), with novelist Witi Ihimaera as story consultant, Waitangi: What Really Happened is an entertaining, colourful docu-drama about the days leading up to and including the signing of the treaty, revealing the incredible story and the characters behind the treaty's creation. The premise of the show involves time travelling a reporter to 1840, where he finds a host of colourful characters all playing a vital role in what later became Kiwi history.

What Hone Heke said "how kind he invites me to a meeting in my own land" hurt me, knowing that the land that was once Māori is now owned by tauiwi. How sad. What tauiwi don't understand about Māori is that we Māori don't own land we belong to it, yet you act as if land is a piece of paper and scribble all over it. ~Hurt tangata whenua.

If as you say Maori don’t ‘own’ land within their own culture, then what are the treaty settlement payments for? Presumably Maori feel that they owned something that was taken from them. That implies ownership of some sort doesn’t it? If they truly believe that they are ‘of’ the land then surely it doesn’t matter to them who owns it?

Your perspective is the one we were forced into and live to this day. I dont have to mention the attrocities faced by many indigenous cultures around tge world. In a term you might understand is that earth is our mother, sustainer, giver of life. Would you strip your mother of her sustenance, divide her up and sell the best parts of her to foreign entities that have had absolutely no connection with her? Why start at 1839? Hobson was a veteran of the Napoleon wars, settled in Port Phillip (later Melbourne), his friend Busby asks for help and to send a report on NZ to England. Australia's role in the European founding of NZ should not be ignored.

Just in case people are wondering why there's an American flag on Heke's boat? Heke had connections with the American consul who were encouraging Maori to rebel against the British by selling them guns, although the U.S were just as bad and would have done a Hawaii on Maori so luckily contracts were signed with the British declaring our independent nation!! Make sure you write this down in your history books because the doco above does not show this part.

This is what happened..Missionary Henry Williams and his son Edward, both of European descent were given the task of drafting the treaty, because they knew the Māori language. But my question? Did they understand Maori?? Did they understand the infinitive dimension of Maori language, Example: the word MAURI is dimensional , does not have a single definition. Therefore, Why should there have been two NON-MAORI, be given the right to translate for Maori! e.g. "It's like a Hindu trying to teach the HAKA to Maori"

The fact that Te reo Maori wasn't really a thing can't have helped. like many island nations (example Japan) before unification Maori spoke varying dialects depending on the region and Iwi of origin. Given that many Maori at this point could read and write in English however I agree the task would have been far better handled by Maori translators. This was short and hurriedly prepared document and it's a real shame there was no follow up such as clear constitution.

+Liz ann Valleli (lizzy) Because the Maori became very interested in the American Revolution in 1765-1783. The thought of revolting by the Maori towards the Pakeha(British) was extreme prevalent. Sorry but im not sure what chief it was but he was important, flew the flag of US to indicate their support for a revolution against the Pakeha(British). But from the video it seems as Hone Heke was probably the supporter, he did chop the British Flag pole down(4 times) and i think was also a keen supporter in the Maori king. Hone Heke also had great Mana(Influence & Power) in the Maori community.

Don't forget France had purchased 40,000 acres in northland and were making plans to claim and colonise NZ in 1835. The Maori were well aware of this ... some see benefits for trade. NSW (ie Australia) was also aware, it's another reason Hobson leaves to make a report on NZ. Another factor was the musket wars and lack of police/military made Europeans feel unsafe. NZ was considered "the lawless" colony ... probably due to it's association with Australia. Everyone in NZ at this time (only about 2000 Europeans) was from Australia... petty crims that had done their time or were on a ticket of leave ... they were the whalers and sealers.

Those that call the Treaty the 'Cheaty' do a real disservice to their own forebears. These chiefs were no fools, and the wiser heads among them released a good deal when they saw one. Whether one side or the other reneged on the deal, or whether social forces were just too great to keep the ideals of the Treaty in place is quite another matter. respect the Treaty and those that signed it, and their intentions. As they say 'Honour the Treaty' [and part of that honouring is to understand what it actually meant at the time to the parties concerned... not re-interpreting it].

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. its a pity people who comment on the early history of New Zealand rarely get it right, as in this case, nearly but not quite. Always at the expense of the British, and insisting we view early Maori through Rose tinted glasses.

Not everyone arrives by waka. That is a Pakeha version of Aotearoa. Waitangi Day is a treaty between two boat peoples' from other islands. Get you facts right.

im pretty sure the Americans heard of the gold rush at the time they were also allies even then strangely when they supported Britain with a war against china at the time im sure that's why it may have been put on the waka, or the only reason i can think of other then remaining English loyalists in the states at the time possibly missionaries also arriving here to help of some sort??

As for the cheaty? None of my ancestors signed it because they already knew it was a fraud. Those that did sign it were mostly from the Northern tribes in which over 500 signatures were given in the Maori version (the understood version) while a mere 30 signatures were placed on the English version which is totally different from the Maori one. Guess which version took precedence?
@davethewave7248
@davethewave7248 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the great Waikato chiefs never signed - Te Whero Whero. Te Waharoa, and Te Heu Heu come to mind. Of course, if might is then right then what the strongest tribe says goes. Within this scheme, what would stop the strongest tribe [the Pakeha] from forcefully establishing their authority... which was why you saw the subsequent war against the King movement in the 60s.

Thank you so much for sharing with me this fragment of history. The Bible foretells a time when peace will be achieved not through mankind. Psalm 46:9 says regarding the Creator, Jehovah God: “He is making wars to cease to the extremity of the earth.” Jehovah God will accomplish true peace by means of his Kingdom, for which many sincere people have repeatedly prayed Matthew 6:9, 10: "Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified. Let your Kingdom come. Let your will take place, as in heaven, also on earth." His Kingdom is not an elusive condition of the heart; it is a real government through which God will establish peace from one end of the earth to the other. The inspired prophet Isaiah foretold that subjects of that government will not “learn war anymore.” (Isaiah 2:4) By means of a worldwide educational program, people will learn to live in peace and thus “beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears.”

Miss out some key context. English empire was spread thin with the mercantile factions running rampant. So the Church, through the Monarchy used the treaty to 'legalise' or codify NZ into a lawful structure. So the Crown with the church could wrest control from merchants like the Wakefields. Any other explanation is secondary. This is almost a fabrication to what and how it really went down. As the reason why one of the greatest cultures, with IMO greatest ever devised economies. I.e Mana Economy. And why they signed is one of the great untold stories. Curious?

@Annette Hatton hi, what is interesting is there are no swear words or letters that make for cussing in the Māori language. And, i know my beLoved tūpuna Heke did not cuss - he like many of that time were Rangatira (chief's) who were strategic stately leaders, thus these qualities hardly typifies one who would cuss. Thank you for caring & enriching our children's reality - Take care & Enjoy a Blessed Bountiful Day 🕊️💐🌼

Someone said that there were no more full blooded maori's left in New Zealand. My mother would fit that category in some way but I don't like the sound of her being called full blooded maori. Does not the word maori mean an ordinary person. A full blooded ordinary person mmm dosen't make sense. Am I wrong in thinking this or have I worded this wrong. Tangata maori means ordinary person. You know it was the european that chose this name from our language just so that they could identify us as one nation of people from New Zealand.The reason why I carn't except this is because you have to say it as being called a full blooded maori from New Zealand. The people who have become citizens of New Zealand call themselves New Zealanders That is what make's sense coming from a european point of view. I can except that I am a maori from New Zealand but not I am full blooded maori from New Zealand. What about my mother is a full blooded aotearoariana from Aotearoa. What about this one I'm a aotearoariana but I'm not full blooded because I have european blood in me to. Yeah back to my mother yep her blood has no european mixed with it. She's going onto 84 year's old now. her and her younger brother of one year are the last of their generation in our immediate family now.

The Treaty`s true intention was to make provision for organized settlement in New Zealand. Māori were drawn in to an agreement by a culture that had no intention of keeping to the terms and conditions of that agreement. Pākehā sent a non- law educated person in the form of self-promoted Governor of New Zealand William Hobson to draft an important document that was translated wrongly for reasons only known to Missionary Henry Williams and his son Edward.

The intentions of British government were fully alligned with the missionaries. If the missionaries could have had their way, New Zealand would have become one gigantic reserv to keep the foreigners out. They were all humanitarian is so far as they wanted to avoid what had happened so terribly to other indigenous cultures as they came into contact with European civilization. The settlers whoever had other motivations, and once they acquired self-government [in 1853], the pressures were such that a clash was going to occur. It was all about land.
