The Cargo Cult of Tanna in the South Pacific have been waiting for John Frum for over a hundred years now.
If you had never heard of an airplane or a refrigerator, would you think it a miracle when you first saw one? When the American military landed on a remote island in the South Pacific during World War II, the islanders were amazed by America’s fantastic cargo - planes, trucks, canned food. They thought such goods could only come from the Gods. Led by the mysterious prophet John Frum, a religion was born.
David Attenborough explores a cult devoted to John Frum, an American soldier, known globally as the 'Cargo Cult'. The John Frum movement still exists in one village on the island of Vanuatu. ‘Waiting for John’ explores this extraordinary religion from the perspective of the last villagers as they stuggle to preserve their way of life in the face of outside pressure and internal conflict. In the process, it asks ‘where do our prophets come from’? And what makes people believe?

The upheaval of the war gave these people a new excuse to return to traditional ways...the confidence to resist colonialism...while at the same time adopting belief in a different kind of colonialism as their savior. It is at the same time inspirational and incredibly sad

This is absolutelty a great documentary, it is interesting how alot comment just mock them but fail to see the very human story here. Religion is a way for a people to organise themselves and reach for something high and while i don't believe in God, i don't all the dismisiveness that is on display. John frum give this people a light in darkest hour (when there where great changes happening on their island) and they are clinging to it as a way to preserve their identity in a huge world that is going to swallow it.

You have to watch "the cosmic egg by Praveen Mohan. The oldest religion may have been a similar story. Plus it repeats in Greek mythology with Prometheus bringing us fire from the gods and teaching new technology.

@lovein68 It is a good documentary. I visited Tanna in the 1980s when the John Frum community was still at Sulfur Bay. Thousands of believers back in those days. The movement is now a shadow of its former self.

The Werner Herzog documentary "Into the Inferno" informed me about the existence of the John Frum Cargo Cult, and im so glad it did! I am fascinated by this religion, not gonna lie... From the beginning with the uprising against the suppression of the local traditions to the big schism that happened. I wish the people of Tanna nothing but the best!

Same! That was a killer documentary. I’ve also been watching more North Korea “human LED panel” videos. I’ve been obsessed with volcanoes since I was little and find “Into the Inferno” to be one of the greatest documentaries on them of all time, if not THE greatest. Do you have any other documentaries you recommend that fascinated you and kept you thinking long after? Can be on anything.

You are aware that all European colonialism was like this, right? We made refueling outposts all over the globe - we didn’t go to “conquer.” The natives came to the shores to see what we made and wanted some of it. Eventually, we couldn’t give everyone enough and they got violent. If either gold or diamonds was discovered on that island, someone will do their best to have them change their mind about us. Probably our small hat friends who did just this after discovering diamonds in South Africa.

They called him John Frum, because they asked his name and he said “I’m John FROM (insert country here, eg, America, USA, etc” and they stuck with just the words “John From” (frum). it was explained in a documentary from decades ago. Send these people a cargo FULL of refrigerators, solar generators, drones, etc!

I know its hard to confirm but my great grand uncle was stationed in New Herbides (Modern Day Vanuatu) in early 1941. He had a memoir sstatibg his experiences there and described the locals as “intrigued to their equipment”. He remembers how a local came to him and saw his fountain pen while writing a note to my great grand father and the local was intrigued. He gave the local the fountain pen. I wonder where it is today.

Do they really need to modernize though? The people of those Pacific islands live fairly simple lives, without a lot of material wealth, but they are widely regarded as among the happiest people in the world. I suspect an influx of modernization into places like that would cause more problems than it would solve.

It doesn’t hurt my feelings at all if you choose to denounce Jesus Christ and send your own soul to hell. @@Khdtn You can worship a carpenter nailed to a stick as much as you want. The truth is that there is nothing special about Jesus. He didn't preach anything unique. There were many others preaching the exact same things he was at the time, John the Baptist was preaching long before Jesus, and there were many others that time has forgotten, Jesus was just repeating the words of others. So his teachings weren't special. What about his death, was that special? The Romans crucified thousands of Jews before Jesus was born, and thousands after, there was nothing special about his death, he died in the exact same fashion as another ten thousand jews. What about the Gospels? The Apostles were uneducated peasants who couldn't read or write, they didn't write anything, neither did Jesus, that's why we have zero texts coming from his hand. The oldest known copies of the gospels that have ever been found were written 400 years after Jesus died, by people who never met him.

John ain't coming back.......Jesus is! Crazy so many can't see what they saw once one step removed. A real person in one generation becomes a spirit to following generations and diatised. Then prophecised to return....sound familiar? Funnier still how they call the people ignorant or crazy for believing the SAME EXACT THING. I actually feel for these people in so many ways.

To all but one of the other commenters: *r/wooosh.* The point of this documentary, obviously, is to get people to ask the question, as Dawkins probably did, who can say who has the more ridiculous beliefs, the John Frum Movement or the indigenous Christians?
