This is definitely one of my favorite songs on Waitress. The way Jessie puts her emotions into singing this song, is just beautiful. Also, the meaning behind this song is actually tremendously sad. But it says a lot about the Character Jenna and her mother. It's heartbreaking, yet so motivating, in a way. Props to Jessie and the cast for belting during this show, and of course Sara to writing the songs!

"What Baking Can Do" is a song from the musical "Waitress" performed by Jessie Mueller (Jenna). Music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles. Make it work Make it easy Make it clever, craft it into pieces Make it sweet Crimp the edges Or make it sour and serve with lemon wedges Even doubt Can be delicious And it washes off of all the dirty dishes When it's done I can smile It's on someone else's plate for a while I'll place it on display And then I'll slice and serve my worries away I can fix this I can twist it into sugar, butter covered pieces Never mind what's underneath it I have done it before I'll bake me a door to help me get through I learned that from you Mama, it's amazing what baking can do Make it up And surprise them Tell them all my secrets but disguise them So they dance on the tongue Of the very people that they're secrets from Make it soon Make it better Though, better never lasts forever I'll make it small so it fits . . . . Even this . . . Even now . . . Even as the walls come tumbling down Even as I can't stop remembering how Every door we ever made, we never once walked out Something I never got the chance to ask her about So with flour on my hands I'll show them all how Goddamn happy I am Sugar, butter, flour Don't let me down! Let's see the next amazing thing baking does now [Thanks to Anonymous, Leah, Doug for lyrics]

I'm guessing she rewrote Door Number Three into What Baking Can Do? There is the same phrase of music in both songs.

Yes but I don't understand why DNT was being replaced maybe because of it's lyrics?

When I saw the show on June 4, when this song started, I had to blink and tell myself to focus and just listen and watch because I was trying *not* to hear "Door Number Three," haha! This is the song from the score currently stuck in my head.
@avidepano59378 жыл бұрын
Probably? I didn't see the pre-Broadway run of Waitress at A.R.T., but I suppose "Door Number Three" was unneeded due to the inclusion of "You Will Still Be Mine" with Earl, and there needed to be a song further explaining Jenna's reason for baking (as a connection to her mother, creative outlet, and escape from the negative aspects of her life).
@apriljade99628 жыл бұрын
+Avi DePano (heyfilipinogirl) Oh. I haven't seen both though cause I'm on the other side of the world. Haha. Well. I've seen only the movie and yes I'm with you. I do thought also that Door Number Three was unneeded and What Baking Can Do is a further explanation of Jenna's reason for baking. :-)
@tonywangkenobi48757 жыл бұрын
I agree about the fact that this song has more meaning for the book of the musical than Door Number Three had (I saw the Broadway one first and then the Off-Broadway one and was kind of disappointed that the relationship with Earl and her mother weren't explained well). And fortunatelly they changed it: it has become my favourite song of Waitress!

Right, so the next time I go to America I'm going to have to try Pie because before this I thought it was just cake with a crust or savoury like Lasagna or Sheppard's Pie - which is not pie. It's not that big in the UK so it should be interesting to try. Maybe something chocolate-y.
@KeshiaRambles5 жыл бұрын
They don't have sweet pie in the UK?!
@aalishag51565 жыл бұрын
@@KeshiaRambles the closest thing I think we have are Mince pies which are tiny and actually have raisins in them. We don't really do it here.
@keylimelucaful5 жыл бұрын
Literally what are you on about??? Sweet pie is available in the UK. Apple pie is a classic British pudding and was long before it became an American staple. Go into any supermarket or bakery in the UK and you'll find loads of sweet pies.
@aalishag51565 жыл бұрын
@@keylimelucaful yeah no, those aren't the same. And sure there is apple pie but it's not all that common. It's available at McDonald's but people I know barely eat it outside of there. You don't order pie for dessert at a restaurant either. Maybe ice cream or brownie. If the place is more American than you my be able to get it with ice-cream

What's the story behind this song?
@poopface60096 жыл бұрын
her mom was is a bad relationship with her father and was never able to leave him a lot like her relation ship is like with earl. they both never walked out of those toxic relations ships and her mother passed away before she got the chance to ask her why she stayed in a bad situation. EDIT: they both spend their time baking to take their minds off their bad relation ships. they bake goodies for the people in their lives that ask too many personal questions about what their life at home is like. also baking helps them seem like cheerful people so no one suspects how awful their husbands are. they only stay married because they needed their husbands money to take care of their children.

I'm obsessed with the music! However, I have to say it sounds like they threw a whole bunch of verses from different songs together. Maybe it's just cause I haven't seen the show, but still, it just doesn't sound right.
