Wake surf 1983 Ski Nautique 2001

Learning to surf. Ballast: 400 on port and 400 on starboard side of motor box. 750 bag in trunk I built, as full as it will get, maybe ~700 lbs. homemade surf shaper. 5'4" obrien nalu board.

Put another 700 - 800 lbs on the back seat and your wave will be legendary! I had An Air nautique (same hull as the SN2001). We ran with 2000 lbs in the back plus people. Had the wave maxed out, but it was very surfable. Also, you need to raise the platform up a few inches with spacers, or cut the outside edges down so it doesnt drag in the water. We made a few videos of how to setup the surf wave that could be helpful

Gr8 how above the water at riding speed do you want swim deck

@@natehbrotherroy17 We trimmed the swim platform so it didnt dig into the wave. While surfing we actually had water coming over the back corner of the SUN DECK from the side of the hull. It didnt seem dangerous at all, but that wave was pretty maxed out at that. Any more and the boat would take on water While sitting still the swim platform was fully submerged.

The wave behind the tristar is pretty decent. I put a video up surfing behind that and what it takes to surf it. We had an Air Nautique with the same hull as this SN2001, and you can get a good wave behind it too. But the Tristar performs better with less weight.

Nice! How did you have it weighted? Have you tried surfing the other side too?

Jay Ellin the red bags on either side of the motor are 400s. Then in the rear compartment I built is a 750 bag, I can't tell you how much weight it holds in the compartment due to the shape. Also a wake shaper I built on the other side. I have not surfed the other side, and the swim platform roughed up the top of the wave.

What did you make your homemade ballast bag out of?

The bags were just standard vdrive sacs, the compartment holding it was wood and carped as well as vinyl cushions like the rest of the boat. I only used it the remainder of the season in the video and the following season

I have the same boat. a friend of mine has two 500s like you have and a 750 for the back. I think he said he has a 250 for the bow too. I want to try it but wonder if it is actually worth it. is the wave big enough to actually surf or are you just trying to not fall off the wake the whole time your up?

Sean Ronan for what it's worth I think it's good enough to actually surf, I have very little experience though, I am self learning. I bought that board and I believe it's good, but being a skim style, I'm thinking it's less than ideal to learn on, but I am getting better and riding longer after the video was recorded. I've still probably got some tweaking to do on the ballast to get it exactly right.
