WAKING UP DORMANT CALADIUMS

In today's video I explain how to wake up the dormant caladiums that I had dug up and wintered over in my basement in vermiculite. Because Caladiums are heat lovers you have to lift them in Autumn when your daytime temperatures drop below 15ºC (60ºF) and you can't plant them out in the landscape until your SOIL temperature is above 60ºF, so the growing season is short and that is why you need to pot those caladiums up now so that when the ground temperature is optimum you can plant out a PLANT as opposed to a tuber and you can enjoy those incredible leaf colours a lot sooner. Despite a short growing season Caladiums are so worth the effort - I would certainly recommend reserving a space in your garden for them. There are so many colour combinations available that they are guaranteed to fit in with any colour palette you have going in your garden.

Greetings from America! I have a huge landscaping area (1/3 acre_ and Caladiums are "stability points". I do it all from scratch but found two caladium plants at a small dealer and discovered it was actually seven bulbs / plants. Like an idiot, I planted early and of course it stopped, even a leaf falling off. But now that it's mid 80's (27-30° C) they are suddenly taking off. Your video on over-wintering was the best!

Thanks Linda. I do love that Magnolia. The table in my basement is now full of either seedlings or pots of caladiums, begonias, etc in the process of waking up. Any warmer day I take them out and leave them in the shade but we are getting precious few good spring days so far.

@GrannysGarden
@GrannysGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I love the Magnolia. I look forward to it every year. I will of course update on the waking up process of the Caladiums. The storing process with your dahlias would be the same, the only difference would be I only store 1 dahlia per bag, so if one starts rotting the others won't be affected so no need to check on them. My basement has a pretty consistent cool temperature throughout the winter without fluctuations. That also helps.
@carolinamoonslilenglishgar8580

I was watching closely your storage. Part of my problem is if my shed gets damp and also space but I'm thinking of trying stacking slim buckets with holes for air put a dahlia in the bottom of each bucket with vermiculite and stack them .....this will also give me space....I have to master this Una . But regardless of dahlias I also need to store my calla bulbs and begonias . It's finding something to fit my space and temps......thanks Una I'm open to any ideas 😊
@GrannysGarden
@GrannysGarden 3 жыл бұрын
You definitely need to keep experimenting. Things like begonia tubers can be stored in the same container separated by vermiculite only so that saves space. A damp shed is worrying. I bought a cheap thermometer from Amazon that gives you the relative humidity of the air and whether it is Wet, Comfort or Dry and also the max and min temps over the last 24 hours and the max/min historic. It has given me a pretty good idea of the reality of my basement and other parts of the house. It might be worthwhile getting one. There is a new method of storage which the American Dahlia Society is implementing with only 3-6% loss to rot and 0% loss to shrivelling. They are using cling film with a sulphur dusting before hand. Fascinating. I will be experimenting with this method next autumn, so maybe we can do it together

Hello Una, I love my Friday mornings with your videos, I sit down with my girls and a cup of tea first thing to watch. Firstly I have to say your magnolia looks absolutely stunning. Oh how interesting about the lilac tree - I always learn a lot from you. I spotted the little watering can I bought you for Christmas 🤣🤣 I have to pop to the garden centre today so I’m going to look for caladium bulbs. Am I right in thinking they like the shade? If so I have the perfect spot. 🥰🥰

Hi Janette. Great to know I have breakfast with my friend on Friday mornings! The little watering can you sent me for Christmas is so useful. There are so many times when the mister is no longer enough and the large watering cans are too much, so perfect size and flow. Love it🥰 And the Lilacs, I love gadgets but I never forget "old school" methods either.... very useful when the batteries on the gadgets run out 🤣 You are correct, Caladiums are very definitely shade loving plants. I hope you find some nice ones for your garden as there are some real stunners out there. Have a great weekend Janette.

Yes, the garden is like a black hole where you get sucked in and time and space seem to stand still and when you glance at your watch you are amazed at how time has flown by without you noticing it. It is totally absorbing.

Hi Una - that magnolia is so pretty. I don't believe I know that variety. Is it something you planted?
@GrannysGarden
@GrannysGarden 3 жыл бұрын
No. It came with the house. It is a Chinese Magnolia called Red Lucky. It needs to be reshaped but I will do that in early summer, with these Magnolias it's best to wait for a while after flowering. The sap flow is too vigorous in spring and it would "bleed" too much. But she is a beauty alright.

Hi Una , Where do you put your potted caladiums in your home? Do you keep them in a dark warm space or out in light ? Was wondering if its the same method for Dahlias as well .Love all your videos ,you explain everything very well .Keep up the good work,
@GrannysGarden
@GrannysGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Deborah. Caladiums are shade loving plants, but once I start the waking up process I no longer keep them in the dark. I have a table in my basement where I start my seeds that is beside a north facing window so they are getting light but no direct sunlight. On warmer days I do take them outside, but again I leave them in a cosy shady area. April for me is usually a month of hardening things off and waking things up outdoors during the day and bringing them in at night, but this month of April has been way below normal average for this month of the year. So I have too many things piled on my basement table. Today is no better.....I am writing this at 10am in my sitting room with the light on it is so dark and it is chucking it down outside!

I unpacked my caladium bulbs from winter storage and they look positively horrid. They're super super super dry and I swear they are dead. Is there any way to tell if they are still viable? Probably a strange question.You see, I don't want to devote any real estate to them as I have so many other bulbs to plant that I know are alive! Thanks for the video. Loved it!
@GrannysGarden
@GrannysGarden 2 жыл бұрын
They should be firm to the touch. If they are either mushy or dry and shriveled it is most likely that they are not viable. You could try putting a few in a pot or tray indoors to see if you can get any to sprout. That way you won't be reserving garden space that might end up as a bare patch.

Hi, I loved your video 🥰 My Florida moonlight went dormant last year and I just kept the bulbs in the pot as they were and just stop watering it in the winter. I started just recently watering it again as the spring was still to cold. Would that be fine? I’ll just make sure to keep the soil wet 😊 Thanks 🥰
@GrannysGarden
@GrannysGarden 3 жыл бұрын
I have done both methods in the past. This year I kept half my Begonias in pots over winter (basically same technique as Caladiums). I just stopped watering them during the winter. Now I put them in a brighter position (not sunlight because they are shade loving plants) and water them every 3days a little until I see shoots appearing then I water them as a normal plant.
