Learn more about Adyashanti's various teachings: bit.ly/3tZvavr
Adyashanti is a widely beloved, American-born spiritual teacher whose practice is rooted in Zen Buddhism but has expanded beyond any one path or perspective. He has created many books and audio programs through Sounds True, including Resurrecting Jesus, Emptiness Dancing, and Healing the Core Wound of Unworthiness. In this episode of Insights of the Edge-which previously appeared as part of the provocative interview series Waking Up: What Does It Really Mean?-Tami Simon and Adyashanti inquire deeply into what exactly constitutes “awakening.” Adya describes his own experiences of awakening, vividly comparing and contrasting his felt sensation of each of these life-changing experiences. Tami and Adya also discuss whether awakening is a sudden or gradual process, and what one can and cannot expect from these moments of profound epiphany. Finally, Adya shares his pith instructions on how to encourage such a spiritual awakening.

Sounds True was founded in 1985 by Tami Simon with a clear mission: to disseminate spiritual wisdom. Since starting out as a project with one woman and her tape recorder, we have grown into a multimedia publishing company with more than 80 employees, a library of more than 1500 titles featuring some of the leading teachers and visionaries of our time, and an ever-expanding family of customers from across the world. In more than three decades of growth, change, and evolution, Sounds True has maintained its focus on its overriding purpose, as summed up in our Mission Statement.

"Now, obviously people do not want to think that they have no purpose, so they invent various purposes for themselves. Eventually, their real purpose will have the possibility of emerging and when it begins to emerge, they will realize that they have a responsibility to accept change that is necessary and to instigate change that is necessary. They will also realize that they have a responsibility to maintain themselves in good health, to become aware of their strengths and weaknesses and their favorable and unfavorable tendencies, and so forth. The emergence of purpose will require change in their thinking, behavior and perception and in their relationships with others as well. Often people become very lazy here because they are waiting for something to change them. Then if it goes wrong, they have someone else to blame. “Hey, I was just there and it changed! Don’t blame me!” But to take full responsibility means that you are cooperating with life in bringing about the necessary adjustments as you proceed." ~Wisdom From The Greater Community Book 1~Provoking Change~

Those emotional moments when recalling his awakening experiences... That's what makes Adya so real to so many of us. I'm a novice in this world, and I had my own spontaneous awakening in March 2, 2022, almost precisely at midnight. And I wept for weeks after that. Sometimes I would remember the things I saw and start sobbing like a child.

It’s so hard to describe, but yes this is probably the best description Awakening. I have tried to talk about it but my partner thinks it is crazy. Or I’m crazy!! What I’ve realised is every trauma I’ve had has been a gift a blessing and I know what source is telling me I learnt something with every trauma! My appetite changed immediately I ate cereal for months then went back to ordinary eating but now again I’m eating wheat everyday so yes I agree it I must have had another or perhaps many over the last 8 yrs my mums passing was what brought my first awakening on it was like the icing on the cake I couldn’t take the hurt anymore! Yes you have to own everything the shadow work you have to be willing to face your fear your shame guilt and anger and have the dark night of the soul that was the night I cried i laughed it was almost like hysteria! I’ve not yet had another night like that. But I thank you both for your honesty it was from your heart I could tell. Much love to you from the UK Liverpool ❤️💎💡💡💡☄️💥🌟🌈🤝🌹💫

I feel enlightened after watching all the ads on this video Ad after ad, letting the ads flow over you. Through you. Despite everything my mind was telling me, I didn't press the skip button. Aftee one hour, there was no longer any ads or any me. The ads were my awareness, and my awareness was ads.

2003/4 I was sitting at a desk US Army Recruiting. I took Bhagwan Sanyass on the internet. I was given a name. My career nosedived, for inexplicable reasons. I could not recruit one individual. I was relieved. That was my awakening. Like a caterpillar to a butterfly. My next duty station for 5 years Nashville, TN. I lived 2 miles from work, had my own office, and on many occasions left and returned whenever I felt like it. Best job I had in my life.

Some experiences described by Adyashanti are not unlike those described by a near death experience (NDE). But some NDE stories go way deeper into the nature of reality (Anita Moorjani, Francisco Valentín, Mellon-Thomas Benedict, and many others). My very brief NDE revealed to me that I am eternal, but I never gave much thought to it; it just seemed natural and normal to me. I have had a few "peak experiences" like those described by Adyashanti. I never gave much weight to them and I don't have any major urge to recreate them; they can't be "recreated" or re-lived, and there's certainly no need to attach any emotional value to them. I live in the reality that "miracles" are natural and happen all the time.

For me the awakening process is realizing that I am not the Ego that has been running the show most of my life. That I am not this body that is living a pre-programmed existence according to the rules of the society I live in. Instead I am conscious awareness that is observing this body that is experiencing this life. I am learning to be the driver in place of the Ego. I am not always successful but I am getting there. I am learning to let the heart do the thinking instead of the reactionary Ego. I am not always successful there either but more and more I am aware of when I fall short. I am looking forward to when I can check the Ego in real time and live life through the heart.

Adyashanti quote highlights from this video: “To qualify as a spiritual awakening, it has to involve some some type of revelation which has the effect of shifting your identity, your your sense of what you are, from a sort of mind-based or ego-based identification where we to an identity that's more based in our fundamental nature, something that's certainly transcendent of the mind and the ordinary identifications we have … It's very life transforming because you're looking at life then from an awareness point of view rather than a egoic or a mind-based point of view.” “Truth is not paradoxical in experience, but it's paradoxical as soon as I even think about it to myself, much less describe it.” “Awakening has to do with our true identity … It's all about moving your base point of identity.” “What is it that's looking through my eyes?”

Awakening involves the colapse of the mind created virtual world , I'd say . That colapse can be followed by a strong sense of loss (often tefered to as the dark night of the soul ) that is a result of losing the identificación with the ego .

The question about what awakening does and doesn’t do. I studied with sasaki roshi who was renowned and considered an awakened master. Yet he was outed towards the end of his life for preying on young women students (students in their twenties and thirties while he was in his eighties). Does that discount his awakened nature? How to hold both his human weakness and awakened nature?

(Note: I am not 'enlightened.' I am not yet Real): So it appears there is some merit in the initial seeking...to allow for a little bit (or a lot) of fundamentalism. Even go bat-shit crazy-radical in your Inquiry, embrace your lust for transcendence and never mind that there is an 'ego,' a "little me" that is seeking. Just do it. Push: "Who is Witnessing This Thought/Sensation?" There will be no intellectual answer for that. Then push harder: "Who Is Witnessing This?" This question (without expectation of an answer) when asked in earnest, will likely cause your monkey-mind to slow-down, stare back at you curious, then slowly begin swelling with smouldering pent-up energy, instead of swinging from branch-to-branch, thought-to-thought. Focus upon whatever it is within you that seems aware of Awareness. Is it a memory? A memory of a memory? What the hell _is_ that weird feed-back-loop that gives you the impression of being...a conscious entity? Push some more. Watch the Watcher Within with all your might and fight every moment, especially when you just want to slide a little into a pleasing masturbatory trance; beware any blissful wisp of opium-smoke sent to steal you from your original intention: to find The Truth At All Costs. No mercy, stay as cold as a rock. Just keep pushing with absolute maniacal intensity to _not fall asleep into any day-dream or 'thought-play' of any sort,_ and retain absolute vigilance ("Who Is Witnessing This Thought?") as best you can, whenever you realize you've lost the thread of your Prime Intention and attend once more to the false, smouldering silence the proceeding question (Who Is Witnessing?) creates. Metaphorically-speaking, the ground of your Being may (or may not) begin to belch smoke, crack and heave ominous, unsteady. Keep pushing as the shore of genuine peaceful tranquility recedes in the psychic undertow you have generated with your Inquiry. ...then stop. Total stop. Walk away. Embrace your defeat. You failed. Do a 180 degree turn and reject your need for 'enlightenment' as just another bad idea. Drop it, even with a guttural curse and just walk away in contempt for your stupidity, _the_ stupidity of it all. Go back to sleep. Sleep now. Get ready for the voltage-spike across your brain when you do this. Depending on how much energy you put into the First Phase, you may not survive this, the Second Phase (as is the intent). I know I won't. I was able to halt the process in my first go (years ago), because I am chicken-shit. Second time I will not try to halt and I'll totally let-go. Be warned: This is all _extremely_ dangerous. No Warranties Expressed Or Implied. There are other ways to do this. It just seems this way may be _my_ way, but I don't like it much. I gotta work for a living...
