Better to prove him wrong than to fire him. If he is wrong, prove it, and if he is correct, learn from him. That's really the only effective way to confront objectionable speech. Being objectionable does not make the speech wrong, being wrong makes the speech wrong. So prove the speech tobe wrong and vanquish it once and for all. And if the speech is correct, then why silence it? It is then objectionable because it points out peoples' flaws. Fix the flaws if the speech is correct, don't silence the speech.

@@atsusa The last time Columbia used tyranical tactics to break up student protests was when they called in New York City police to quell campus protests was in 1968, when students had taken over the campus and some buildings as part of the anti-war protests that raged on college campuses in that election year. The result was that something like half of Columbia's faculty departed soon thereafter for other schools in large part due to the university's violation of the principle of academic freedom. Its how UCal Berkley became known as the "Columbia University of the West". Shafik is trying to avoid a similar outcome this time.

All I can say is I’m SO PROUD of my daughter for saying NO to Columbia, and every other Ivy League school when she was accepted ! She is now a TOP orthopaedic Surgeon, specializing in sports medicine without a degree from any of these indoctrination schools!!! Does free speech include criticizing the flaws in Quran and Hadiths ? Why was Salman Rushdie attacked for his book "The Satanic Verses"? Why do only people from one faith allowed to ridicule other religions, how is this freedom ? This is just one group bullying the whole world just because we dont agree with the teachings of their prophet. Secular Talk can you criticize the verses in Quran which specifically states that a husband can legally beat his wife even if he has a doubt that she is being unfaithful, or any person who does not belong to their faith either needs to be converted or has to pay a tax for not being of their religion or killed if he does not pay tax. For the LGBTQ community think twice before supporting Hamas, you will brutally murdered, there is no forgiveness just death penalty. I agree with freedom of speech but it should both ways. Don't you think if Hamas releases the hostages then this war would be over. Isn't it Israel's right to protect their people ? Hamas attack on Oct 7th, ruthlessly killing infants, men women, rap*ing , stripping them naked beating them. In fact people of Palestine were celebrating rejoicing the attacks. People of Palestine are supporting a terrorist organization and now when Israel is retaliating it's still Israel fault.

The questions I'm not hearing in this is "Do you as the President of the University have the power to terminate these staff members?" Now before you haul off and say "Uhhhh she's the president, of course she does!" You may be surprised. For example: The president of my company cannot just walk downstairs, point to me and say "You're fired". If he did, my next visit would be to the labor board to open up an unlawful termination case. Now I'm a nobody middle management guy working for a company no one outside of our area has ever heard of. Now imagine you are a tenured Professor at Columbia University. You might find 'giving them a talking to' is literally the most extreme punishment she's allowed to dish out. Professors at lesser known schools are protected by a labyrinth of bureaucratic and policy BS I can only imagine the scope of the bullet proof contracts Columbia Professors have. Now, to be fair, she could just be incompetent or a coward or a hypocrite...my guess is though (knowing how these institutions operate) that the amount of power she has to shut up an extremist Professor is nothing short of laughably little.
