Күн бұрынIt's creepy and it's kooky, mysterious and spooky, it's all together ooky. . . and whacky ! ! ! The Whacky Shack dark ride at Waldameer Park in Erie, Pennsylvania was built by Bill Tracy in 1970. Bill Tracy is considered a legend in the dark ride business and sadly there are very few of his attractions left. The Whacky Shack at Joyland Amusement Park in Wichita, Kansas is another Bill Tracy creation that closed along with the entire park in 2006. A fire was started inside the ride in April, 2007 and was put out by a Park employee. I believe the Joyland Whacky Shack is still standing. The Waldameer Park Whacky Shack gets my vote for my favorite dark ride. Video taken on July 1, 2008.

Love these crazy-ass rickety old vintage rides, the cheesiest the better...if I was a billionaire I'd build a whole old school theme park to preserve these!

I'm from Erie and its my go to ride whenever I'm there. People from Erie know the smell. Its unlike anything you have ever smelled. As kids going to school in Erie, we all have has school picnics year after year there. What an absolute treasure we have in our back yard...

I’m from Erie and I live very close to the point where I can here the bongo from the Log ride and the goodbye song from my house. A fun story about the whacky shack as that, the top part once had the lights out so that you could only hear the heartbeat. It was so cool! Wish it was part of the ride! 😁

Can I ask you something? In Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, they have Halloween Fright Fest. Is there any chance that you guys in Erie have Waldameer open in October like Six Flags Great Adventure? It would be perfect for Halloween! Give this New Jersey guy the scoop!

@@dog453679 sadly they are not open past Labor Day 😞 at Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio they used to be open for Halloween experience, don’t know if they still do it because of covid??? Good luck

@@dog453679 there’s a place near the border of PA and NY, it’s also a amusement park and they do some type of event for Halloween. the amusement park is called darien lake (or six flags).

@THE AVERAGE BEAR Waldameer is very nice but it’s kinda gone down a little (at least from what i’ve seen-). like more teens going there and causing stuff, but other then that, it’s a nice amusement park. they just added a new water slide, and two new rides in the last 3 years. so they definitely are improving. ( also- i hate rocky beaches/lakes too lol )

I live I'm Erie.. 5 minute drive from Waldameer and went here as a kid and now I work here as a teen. This ride is a classic, and whoever said it's always a 2 hour wait is full of it. These rides probably won't push 30 minutes of waiting if the line is full, just saying!

I'm impressed...we have a wacky shack in Wichita Kansas at Joyland Amusement park ...unfortunately the park is rotting away right now not in operation...but when everything in the old shack was working it was very similar to this one...I didn't know there was more than one

One thing Pennsylvania has over the big mega parks and that's the good old hometown park charm. I was born and raised in Florida and never experienced the classic dark ride like this one. Down here, it's always cutting edge and high tech. There's something to be said for the low tech rides like this one.

There used to be a Bill Tracy "Whacky Shack" at Bell's Amusement Park in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was customized with the name "Phantasmagoria," but it was structurally and mechanically identical to this. The color scheme was darker, and the order of the "stunts" (industry term for displays) was slightly different, but it was essentially the same ride. By the time Bell's closed for good, half of the stunts were gone. When something broke, the owners didn't fix it. They just tore it out and let guests ride through the dark. It was finally demolished with the rest of the park in 2006. There's a beautiful fairgrounds parking lot there now.

My favorite part of the ride is the mirror room with the blinking strobe light. The famous award-winning Haunted Mansion (1979) ride at Funland in Rehoboth Beach, DE also ends with an oncoming truck hurled at the riders upon exit. :)

i loved this ride as a kid! This ride is the coolest. i've never forgotten it. the factory our dad worked at (Cliffstar) used to give all the employees tickets for a company picnic family day once a summer to waldameer. I loved this ride! i hope it's still there, i'm going to visit with my niece soon.

Did Joyland have the fluorescent-painted door sequences and the rotating tunnel effect? The videos I found don't show that, and I can't find a site that has a good walkthrough of the ride.

I remember riding this. I regret ever doing that . It scared me so bad that my older sister had to cover my ears and i covered my eyes. Especially that fucking bus thing scared me the most. After that happened i never went on it again. I was like 5 when i rode it so dont judge me

The nostalgia is so strong I can feel it in my bones. The sight, sound, feeling, and yes even the smell. I've been away from Erie since 2010, I really need to visit.

Along with the awesome sights and sounds, comes the wonderful Whacky Shack smell. Nothing else quite like it. It's sort of sweat mixed with pee and vomit. ;)

Lindsay Nelligan , Yeah I used to go to Erie pennsylvania every summer for a week.And 1 time we went to this park. I'm not really a huge amusement park fan. I liked going to the beach when I was there instead. Imagine if the ride broke down when you were still on this ride and inside the dark. yeah spooky, Do they still make rides like this? My friends went on this ride while I was there also.

I love how this ride hasn’t changed one bit in the last 20 years. I mean they repainted it back in like 2014 but it was just a touch up because the colors were fading and there was writing on it.

How lucky you folks are that have these two classic (along with Pirates Cove) dark rides made by the master, Bill Tracy. There are a handful left and you still have 2 standing. How lucky you folks are.

anyone remember this ride BEFORE Waldameer filled in the original deep dip (look at the video and the blue section is where they leveled off the dip) Waldameer filled up the original big dip in the late 80s. The fat riders kept getting stuck at the bottom of the dip and the ride employees had to push the car up and out of the bottom.

The Hunt's Pier Whacky Shack was SBNO in 1995, and removed early 1996 during the remodeling into Dinosaur Beach which closed end of 1998 season. The Golden Nugget was rebuilt at Knoebels and is opening this summer. The Whacky Shack in Wildwood , NJ at Hunt's Pier was called Hunt's Horror from 1989 and up.

I love rides like this. I remember as a kid my brother and I would go on rides like this and as were were at the railing on line by where the cars come out of the house at the end we'd try to gauge how good the ride was by the looks on their faces as they came out. In the end it usually didn't matter, we almost always had a fun in these every time.

i went to the kentucky state fair, and we rode the ghost pirate ride, and it wasnt even scary! it was LAME!

Hunt's Pier in Wildwood, NJ had a Whacky Shack there are videos of the outside of it here on KZfaq from 1986 and 1988 for a few seconds it had the moving letters on the facade. some of the props inside included the sawmill, whacky clock, knit wit, hell's kitchen, crooked mine, skeleton hands coming out of doors,and more. There are some interior pics at laffinthedark in the dark rides of Hunt's Pier article and a few rare pics in the Tracy darkness article at laff as well as Anthony's boardwalk

I used to work at this park when I was a lad. They did shorten the dip and at 00:46 you can see the line in the blue paint where the dip originally was.

3:28 as a kid this was always my least favorite part it always reminded me of the circus and a clown or something would pop out of it me and my friends go every year and I'm glad its opening because of covid19 and were going next week cant wait! Definitely going on this classic!

Yes, it did! You can see the line where the original dip was located. I believe the hill was made smaller because the cars had trouble getting back up to the top of the hill.

I know they removed alot of the dips from these rides, but looking at the front of the building it looks like the dip on this one might have originally been deeper then it is now. Can anyone confirm this?

RanHam335 I know this comment was 9 years ago but yes. The dip was a lot deeper but due to people getting whiplash as well as cars not making it over the second half and employees having to push it up caused them to fix it. Sorry it took 9 years for me to respond 😂😂

@brittanybug10 Now that you mention it, I think you're right! I remeber seeing a lot more in 2010 than when I went on it in 2009. I think they remodeled it since it turned 40 last year. I think they also did some work on the Pirate's Cove fun house as well.
