You probably know their names and work, but you might not know the stories of their personal lives. They're impressionists, artists who worked during the 19th-century art movement that started with a group of Paris painters who faced stiff opposition from the conventional art world. In this series, art writer Waldemar Januszczak explores the back stories and works of four of the movement's most influential painters: Pissarro, Monet, Renoir and Bazille. To get a complete picture, Januszczak visits the cities and towns where the men lived and from which they drew their inspirations.

I love you Waldemar, so good at explaining, and perspective with a bit of cheeky humor. So smart without sounding preachy. One of my absolute favorite lines of his, out of thousands (and I've watched almost all. ) Was his line about the goths, not the historical goths but the sad imos, the ones dressed in all black, and usually covered in tattoos, he said something like, I think they just need a hug. 🤗🤗. I feel the same about allot of the people in the world today. And especially those who do the body art tattoos etc..(cut and paste pop culture (imo) on the skin for some kind of self expressing need for self esteem, trying so hard to be cool and unique but really just following a trend) .....more hugs more art, more intelligent and cheeky perspectives and please more Waldemar!

Great artists, great host, great documentary! This is a recipe for perfection, imho. I love hearing about the artists lives before they became the artists we know. It's all so very fascinating! I just wish he had been my art teacher, the knowledge and the explanation he gives to each series is wonderful. I can’t draw or paint , but I’m engrossed in the humans that could.

When I first put paint on canvas my heart knew what Waldemar explains so well my vision the first time I was mesmerized by a Monet and the revolution of the eye.

There is something about Waldemar" voice, when I go to bed I select one of his videos and then fall asleep within 2 or 3 min. It soothes my soul somehow plus I learn something new every time I listen to one of his topics. I mean that in a kind and admiring way, I love this guy. The first time I watched one of his videos about some French artist I thought his voice was irritating but I thought this guy is smart and he also knew his shit so I would watch one more, then I was hooked lol
