This three oscillator analog with 8 voice paraphonic operation, has slipped under the radar a little with some of the other big monosynth releases this year. I think it deserves a closer inspection.

Agreed. It's crazy deep and full of insane features that can be combined in so many ways. Very logical, laboratory like and german in the best sense - I carry mine in my hand luggage everywhere I go with a small 2x2 interface. Just hooked mine up to an Oto Bam and a memory man.......I love how it doesnt have cheap digital effects on it or any instant gratification bells and whistles - it continually rewards and surprises me, even after almost a decade.

@@UBERLADEN69 I had a bit of a saga with mine, kept freezing and making a high pitched whine. Sent back to Waldorf for repair. They had it for 6 months before sending it back to me in the same state saying that the issue would be fixed in a future firmware update. It wasn't. Not a happy customer. Putting that to one side, if you get a good unit they sound fantastic and they're massively flexible.

Excellent review as always! A general question, I know they are no longer 'new'.. but you don't seem to have any reviews on the ION, Micron .. or the new'ish' Miniak... Perhaps a review of the Miniak, to help people really see what it can do? Also, would you consider reviewing a more retro VA like the AN1X?

Great review as always Nick. I was wondering if you could answer a question for me: With MIDI, is it possible to control/modulate more parameters than the unit is naturally capable of? I'm wondering if I can basically expand the number of knobs with a MIDI controller, something like a Behringer BCR2000. Also, is there any sort of a MIDI "Teach" function in the Pulse 2?

My travel synth since 2013, have one in Mexico with me right now - the presets don't even begin to show the depth and capabilities of the engine - the oscillator functions and routing are incredibly versatile - AM, sync, filter FM, drive modulation, XOR. Basic monosynth sounds are easily achieved with no menu diving. The filters are not too exciting, but plenty versatile, its a portable sound design laboratory.......

what's really weird about that lovely display not showing greater detail is that the blofeld (which is almost exactly the same form factor) shows all those details - it makes programming it a joy, because you get amazing visual feedback. of course, the blofeld has a lot more parameters, but it's so strange that waldorf didn't do same on the pulse 2. maybe it's something they'll patch later down the track?

Alexander Chopelas it is a different screen than on the blofeld though. It would make sense if it was the same screen I could rationalize them just using what they have (they used the blofeld body and knobs) but it's a bit larger than the screen than blofeld uses, yet it gives less visual feedback. I'm hoping they fix this in the next update as its still a fairly new product I'm sure they have their kinks they want to work out.

Yeah sounds great, but im a little disappointed by the display. i thought that was a brilliant part of the Blofeld. i used to screen on my Blofeld as an educational tool for friends that were new to synthesis, it really helped them understand what was going on. Why make a bigger screen just for a couple numbers???!!!! Hopefully there will be an update later fixing this.

Most likely, to save money. They probably have a good deal on those screens for the Blofeld, and it was more cost efficient to keep using those than to order new ones specifically manufacturing the Pulse 2.

i have this synth it is a monster. the band pass and low pass filters sound very nice, main weakness for me is not being able to tweek envelope and filters at the same time. easy way around this is a cheap midi controller so u can bring out access to those controls.

+James Reeno an example would be cutoff freq and filter envolope both affect the cutoff freq so u need fast access to both to efficiently get the sound u want. not litterely at the same time but u want immidiate access to those controls without having to change to env mode then back lots of times

about the digital/analog debate, i found this text (youtube/lesindes) : " I have talked to the Waldorf service engineer now. And he was confirming what was in mind always: The basisc sound generators of PULSE 2 are 3 digital controlled anlog oscillators we use to call DCO by they named them DO. Same as in PULSE 1. In addition there is a digital sound chip built in that is providing at maximum 8 digital voices (for paraphonic, unisono stuff) that are lead through the regular analog VCA-VCF of PULSE 2. So the MONOphonic sound generation is ANALOG and the PARAPHONIC, UNISONO sound generation is purely digital." So yes their is DSP
@LouisSerieusement
@LouisSerieusement 8 жыл бұрын
+TheOrangepeak mono is ANALOG and unisson and poly are DSP (digital) !! great synth but i feel Waldorf hide a bit the digital side of the pulse2, and it's a shame in my opinion, it's almost lying to the customer ..well it's no bigdeal as it sounds nice but they should have assume it.
@tomaszgawlik3035
@tomaszgawlik3035 8 жыл бұрын
+TheOrangepeak Dco doesn't meant its not analog, its just digitaly controled analogue oscilators in difference from Vco which is voltage controled :V For example Bass station 2 have dco too and its analogue...
@michaelbauers8800
@michaelbauers8800 8 жыл бұрын
+Marian Rogowski Since when is DCO not analog. Ah well, people will believe what they want. While DCOs and VCOs are different, but are analog by any reasonable definition. A digitally generated wave is different in that it's a bunch of digits running through a D2A. DCO looks analog except for the digital timer

@tomaszgawlik3035 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Bauers i just said that...
@LouisSerieusement
@LouisSerieusement 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Bauers you both misunderstood me, my fault. I know what DCO's are; i was just saying that the monophonic sound generation is generated by the DCO's (which are analog indeed), and in the paraphony/unisson mode, DCO's are desactivated and the sound is generated by DSP (8voices, pwm oscillators) ; this is what Waldorf say when you ask them precisely how they do 8voices paraphony with only 3 DCO. it is because paraphony is DSP

vinyljunkie07 Do you know if there are still problems with the Blofeld?
@vinyljunkie07
@vinyljunkie07 10 жыл бұрын
Adrian Myers The XTk still has a bug which means the after touch is basically broken and is a known fault. When the Q was released it was basically in beta stages with a lot of the features not even available or a usable os but it was sold, even the SOS mentions this, as it matured it got a lot better. The micro q was the same story which is why I initially sold mine as all it did was crash or break speakers when it froze, only now the OS is better. The last update makes it pretty usable, still minor bugs with the arp's timing but nothing too bad. The Blofeld is a total mess though, mine is still on beta os until they pull their finger out and release something solid not to mention how horrible and cheap the hardware on the Blo is. The cheap pots which fail quickly, the failing audio output which is also very common or the crappy DAC's... Waldorf's out dated email user forum is full of pissy people with such issues or doing a quick google search. Saying all that, they do make lovely but qwerky synths, it's good to see the Pulse 2 doesn't have such issues. May be that's why it's taken so long to release as they got bored of listening to people with issues on the Blofeld lol

I can't believe Waldorf didn't do a full 49 key version of the Pulse 2 like they did for the Blofeld or at least a 37 key version jeez. That's mental, the only reason i never bothered with the Blofeld is that is fully digital, good sounds but 10 years old digital but I love the white version keyboard, plus the keybed is also amazing. The Pulse 2 with 3 DCOs (analogue) in a 49 or 37 key body would be here in my room already... not a big fan of modules...

It is a monophonic synth so it cannot be multitimbral, by definition to be multi-timbral it needs to have more than one voice. Since the Paraphinic modes are created from OSC 1 and 2 they cannot play more than one sound at a time, making multitibrality pointless

The synth looks like it is build to last, but as a matter of fact the knobs of all synths produced by Waldorf have a chronic problem, doesn't matter if it is the last generation (Blofeld) or the generation prior to that (Micro Q), it seems that the encoder technology is the same for all Waldorf synths. At a certain point the encoders stop responding when you turn them. It is a shame 'cause these synths have a wonderful sound, with a distinguished personality. I have a Blofeld and I had to take it to a synth artisan wich repaired the knobs, who did a terrific job, but wasn't able to get it 100% perfet (maybe 85%), the same with my MicroQ. It is not just me saying that, just Google "Blofeld encoders fix" and you'll see. The synth technician told me that this problem is caused by the sample rate at the encoder is sampled, combined with the fact that the lubricant inside the encoders dry (worse if you are in a hot or tropical country), the contact plates gets deslocated, and it fails to respond. Imagine buying an ultra expensive Q keyboard and the encoders stop respoding...And my experience is that the crashes are rare, but they exist, and there are issues with updating OS as well.

Is there a parameter jump when you switch a pot from one bank of settings to another, then move it a little bit? Say I used knob 1 to set the VCF Cutoff to max, then switched it to controlling LFO1 Speed. If that was previously set low, but I now move the knob a tiny bit to the left, doesn't it jump to nearly all the way up / nearly full speed? I would have thought sharing knobs between different parameters meant they'd use rotary encoders, so they could pick up where they left off, but Nick seemed to be saying they use pots.

No for me as it has no keys! But having said that it sounds great, but so does the brute and BS2.

verve92 Just buy a cheap 25 key MIDI controller. You can get an Alesis Q25 for something like $60 on amazon. Behringer U-Control is a nice one with lots of assignable knobs and even acts as an audio interface for $99. Honestly not a big deal at all. Edit: Also you could get both the BS2 and Pulse 2, control the P2 with the BS2 :)

Deter Pinklage I like the simplicity of turning on a unit and playing it. Avoid MIDI if I can.

verve92 Fair enough, but sometimes a little effort can yield large rewards. While the pulse 2 doesn't have many knobs, you can technically control every function via MIDI, so it's actually not that hard to get a fairly cheap 25 key controller with 8 knobs to greatly increase it's tactility. Plus of course, you're getting 3 analog oscillators, paraphony, and 8 modulation slots, which neither the brute nor the BS2 can boast. Plus dat build quality.

Yeah I put forth TONS of effort just programming my synths, which include: DSI Mono Evolver Keyboard and Prophet '08 and an DX-7. I am a knob snob so the DX is rough going- and it's FM.

How come can he say that the filters are not "charismatic"?? Damn it we're talking about WALDORF FILTERS, maybe the most genuine and classy filters ever... he should study his classics...

The Pulse 2 does not have the same analog filters as the Pulse, Pulse+, Microwave 1, etc. Different chips, and many have said it does not have the same character.
