It is by no way Wales' fault that another team has ill discipline, but there certainly is a theme for 2021. 6Nations - vs Wales Ireland received an early Red Card (very narrow wales win) Scotland as above France as above (with try chalked off) Autumn Internationals Fiji Dominating Wales - Early Red Card, Yellow (13 men) Fiji loose. Australia dominating Wales, early red card, then yellow (down to 13 men) and dubious intercept try Now Wales with good discipline or at least not getting called out for ill-discipline then fair play. But my goodness, they have had a lucky year of only playing a couple of games against 15 men.

Posting this as a Wales fan so I'm obviously going to be slightly biased. This was an uncomfortable game to watch from a Wales point of view, even more so than the Fiji game. Wales do not currently look like they have the finger on the pulse. I understand there are a lot of maybe first choice players injured, and one benefit of this autumn campaign is we have had a chance to get a lot of less experienced players some much needed international level experience against some of the best teams in the world, but Wales just looked a little aimless. Fair play to Austrailia, I constantly thought Wales would lose the game throughout, they had the attacking flair that Wales lacked, I think if you went on skill level Austrailia 100% deserved to win. Unfortunately discipline and a few other mistakes cost them the game. I know a lot of people may say the ref was awful but at the end of the day top level international teams need to learn how to play and adapt to the ref, its an integral part on matches these days. That coupled with not playing to the whistle etc cost Austrailia. I'm looking forward to a good rugby match between both of these teams in the Rugby World Cup.

There is a massive difference to adapting to the Ref and a Ref being absolutely and totally biased towards 1 team. I am not excusing any or all ill discipline by Australia but you have to admit the frustration must have been horrendous considering Wale's got to do whatever they wanted without being penalised. Wales should have had at least 3 yellows and 2 red's if you work off the Ref's mentality for the yellow and red for Australia. I get things can be missed but he didn't miss most of these card offenses, he just choose not to punish Wales in the same way he punished Australia

HELP! Please excuse my ignorance. I've only started watching rugby union, late in life and have never played it. Would appreciate if someone could explain why the player at 5:11, doesn't not get a yellow card, for the deliberate knock-on? One was awarded earlier in the match. If anything, this one looked more deliberate.
@willmc4403
@willmc4403 2 жыл бұрын
So, after the deliberate knock on at @5:11 , Australia re-gather the ball. You can see the referee put his arm out to signal they now have penalty advantage for that deliberate knock on. When Australia then lose the ball, the referee initially blows for a penalty to Australia, and would possibly have given a yellow card. However, it seems the TMO or someone then draws the referee's attention to the Australian guy jumping really early for the high ball, and effectively taking out the Welsh player off the ball a few seconds before the deliberate knock on, and we all get to see a replay of that. We imagine that play stops at the first offence, so the referee doesn't punish anything that happens afterwards (unless there's something really serious like a red-card offence). Even if they hadn't had this earlier incident, the deliberate knock on might not have been a yellow card, because whereas the other one clearly prevented a pretty nailed on try, in this case there are a few Welsh defenders out wide, and there's a decent chance they will stop the move anyway.

For any of those complaining about officials decisions (mainly seems to be english or "southern hemisphere" supporters, go figure) It's all simple really, alot of the "newer" rules are there to protect player health, so they dont receive life changing injuries from head contact and dangerous tackles, and the one try was clearly shown to not be a knock on. At first I thought it was but from the refs point and TMO cameras its seen to not be, thus they didnt stop play, it isn't ANY of the officials fault that the Australian defence just decided to stop playing. it is becoming all too regular that games of rugby are decided on refereeing decisions. name another sport where the influence of the referee means so much. Almost every single week the games are decided on penalties or interpretations. Some calls are made. Some are missed. This is a sad sad time for rugby. It's why NZ has been so good for so long. They took the referee out of the game by making sure they score enough points for him not to matter. but when every game is decided by 1 or 2 points then there really can't be a clear winner when it jsut comes down to 1 or 2 calls which could have gone either way.

I think you’re over-reacting to this. In any game with a referee or umpire there is every chance that outcomes are going to depend on decisions that can go either way. Games have been win or lost on refereeing decisions for as long as I can remember in rugby and other sports. Think of penalty decisions, or offside, in football. It always hurts more when it affects your team, but if you really feel that refereeing decisions are affecting the game, then you should focus on the laws, not the referees. They have as much technical help as you can possibly get to help with their decisions and they mostly do a pretty reasonable job. I think the laws on player safety in rugby are relatively easy to adjudicate. The most contentious laws, in my mind, are around the breakdown and whether an attacker is preventing release or the defender is holding on.

As a neutral, I was absolutely appalled by the severe inconsistency in the Ref decisions. I have no issue with Beal's yellow card but how Wale's didn't get yellow for the exact same offense, more blatant than Beale or a Red for shoulder to Head is beyond me. The Ref and his team made decision to penalise for deliberate knock on and hitting the head of the opponent but only if it were Australia doing the offense. Why would any team elect to play Wales in a friendly game if the game isn't referred fairly. Team's in the 6nations don't have a choice to play Wales unless they pull out which won't happen but seriously, it's getting beyond ridiculous at how differently Ref's treat Wale's, compared to there opponents

The ball went backwards out of Tompkins hands. Impossible to be carded for intentional knock on, if the ball doesn’t go forward. It’s not inconsistency when your talking about 2 different outcomes. I get you’re still salty about o’mahony’s (correctly handed out) red in the six nations, but I think it’s time to get over it by now don’t ya think?

@@AA-vb2pq I wasn't talking about that incident and I'm not salty about O Mahony's card as he deserved it. Majority of carded offenses, I have no issue with but to say there was no inconsistency in the reffing of the Wales V Australia game is just ridiculous. It was inconsistent for both sides. How a Wales player doesn't get a Red for a clear swinging hand to the head on a player that wasn't interrupting play is mind boggling. By sending off/Red carding the Australian for his head on head challenge was right so the Ref had set the Marker by not allowing any hits to the head which is absolutely right and then allowing Wales to not be penalised the same for a more deliberate hit to the head is clearly inconsistent. How can you not see that. The decision had been made to penalise any head contact as player welfare is paramount as it should be. I will never complain about player's getting card's but I will complain about inconsistent reffing
@AA-vb2pq
@AA-vb2pq 2 жыл бұрын
@@ocodeskamcdbsm I personally think Gareth Thomas should’ve seen red, but to act like you don’t understand why Adamson viewed a high speed head-on-head collision 6 and a half feet off the ground differently from a low speed swinging arm to the top of the head a few inches off the floor then I can’t help you. You can disagree with the call, I know I do, but to act like it’s a huge indictment on the ref for showing a Welsh bias and using it to claim that “it’s getting beyond ridiculous at how differently Ref’s treat Wale’s compared to there opponents” is stupid. It’s not Wales’ fault that Fagerson, O’mahony, Sau and now Valetini have each seen red for contact with the head… Regardless you originally started by complaining with as much vigour about Tompkins’ try/Beale’s card which had nothing to do with player safety so forgive me for not buying your claim that you are only concerned with dangerous play or that you “will ever complain about player’s getting card’s but [you] will complain about inconsistent reffing”.
@ocodeskamcdbsm
@ocodeskamcdbsm 2 жыл бұрын
@@AA-vb2pq never once mentioned Tomkins try, did I. It wasn't the only knock on in that game by Wales. Since when was the swinging arm slow? He went for a player who was no where near the ball and hut his head and no matter how slow you feel it was it was a swinging arm to the head which is always punished with a Red unless there was mitigating factor's to drop it down from a Red to yellow do no way could you mitigate that down. I am not blaming Wales got any other team's poor discipline and horrendous decision making, that's on the team's but to say there wasn't inconsistency is ridiculous. A ref set's that bar by penalising a team for there poor discipline but to not penalise both team's in the same way for the same poor discipline is showing inconsistency. I thought exactly the same in the French V All Blacks game, where there was clear inconsistency by Barnes on certain things, like calling the Ball out of the ruck and flat passes. There is a great video on here by a Welsh guy who went through every inconsistent decision during the Welsh V Australia game. It's was inconsistent for both team's but he also focused on the card's that were and that should have been. I'm also waiting for Nigel Owens view on it which should be either this week or next. Can't remember when the interview is. I have seen his last few and he is very fair. Calls out bad decisions and/or explains why the ref made a certain decision
@AA-vb2pq

@@ocodeskamcdbsm If you weren’t referring to the Tompkins knock on, which knock on did you possibly think merited a yellow card? So you call for consistency, then are upset that Gareth Thomas was punished in exactly the same way as Alaalatoa was vs Scotland for a similar incident? To act like all contact the the head is punished the same is a little ridiculous to me, there are multiple mitigating factors which refs take into account and to act like you can’t see why Adamson reached the the conclusion he did for the Thomas incident is baffling. Like I said, I’d have handed out a red for it, but it’s not a reach to say that a yellow was fair too, based on level of danger and precedent. Nigel Owens’ take on the incident was similar to mine, he said “I can agree with a yellow card that Mike Adamson gave here because the degree of force was not particularly high. However, it was totally avoidable. For that reason, I would have gone with red.” You’re allowed to disagree with a ref’s decision and lament inconsistency but acting like it is almost all one way and claiming that Wales get treated differently to other teams doesn’t sound like genuine criticism, it sounds like bitterness. And that’s honestly how it came across. If you can point me to the alleged Welsh knock on that you claim should have been carded, I’ll give my honest thoughts on it, but so far nothing you have said has convinced me of this Welsh bias and beneficial inconsistency favouring them.

If I recall correctly, there was a red to the opposing side in almost every Wales game I remember from the last six nations. At some point, when there’s a common denominator like that it makes me wonder if they’re being coached to put their head into contact on offense deliberately, which would be extremely dangerous and cynical. It feels like they’re finding a way to exploit the stricter rules for safety, or maybe it’s just a freak aberration that there seem to be more reds given to teams playing Wales than when the same teams play anybody else.

I don't get the difference in the Wallabies player getting a yellow for supposedly deliberately knocking on the deflected ball and the Welsh player doing the exact same thing (albeit backwards) and scoring an uncontested try. Their action was the same. It was just a matter of chance the ball went a certain direction for one and not the other. And how (ref) Adamson or TMO can establish intent of the former to be "cynical play" from what I saw must make them mind readers. What I saw was the Aussie fullback about to tackle the runner, then instinctively react to him shucking the ball awkwardly at the last second. Just a valid reaction to attempt for the ball - not an intent to stop play.

As for the intercept, if it went backwards (debate amongst yourselves!) then there is no law to say it's illegal, so try stands. If it did go forwards, it'd be decided on whether he was making a genuine attempt to catch. As he was swatting at it I think it'd be a yellow still, but it's nothing like Beale's really is it.
