The reason you don't need a bass is because Indian music relies more on the relationship between notes rather than the notes themselves. Bass frequencies were (and still are) traditionally reserved for the drums of war. That's why they're so terrifying when you hear them in Indian movie OSTs.

rd burman's compositions were so famous and so recognisable because he had such wonderful basslines in songs such as aa dekhen zara, o maria, etc.

@@spass7431 Indian classical music is different. RD Burman's scores were notably influenced by rock, jazz, disco, and he was often forced to copy popular Western tunes of the time. Those songs also weren't limited to a certain raag. The comparison is useful, but incorrect.

@@spdcrzy Often is a very vague term, he may have copied 1% of the songs he composed and ofcourse classical music is a whole different thing, I was talking in general like the track tu hi re which was sung here. I don't know if you noticed but Hariharan sang in Tamil and Hindi and I believe the Tamil version is the original

Both versions were made simultaneously. So no original/ dub its more like hindi version(called tu hi re) and tamil version (called Uiyre).

Yes. The instruments and musicians do seem to have their own solos going simultaneuously. Thats what I found beautiful about Classical Indian music. The spontaneity! Also with years and years or listening and performing it the musicians gain a subconscious understanding of what sounds good in combination with what and what doesnt. Like when I was learning hindustani classical the experienced tabalji (tabla player) would know exactly how to modify the taal (percussive rhythm cycle) to go with my taan (taan is a type of vocal embellishment?? to put it simply) And it sounded so cohesive as if it was obviously meant to be performed that way. Thats what I like about live jazz performances as well.😊 Also thanks for your insights. I learn a lot just listening to you guys discuss.

Actually, 3 Grammy awards this year. 1. best Global Music Album for the album This Moment with the band Shakti. Zakir Hussain and John McLaughlin are part of the original band from the 70s. Other current members are Shankar Mahadevan, Ganesh Rajagopalan (of the famed violin duo Ganesh-Kumaresh) and Selvaganesh Vinayakaram (son of Vikku Vinayakaram who was part of the original Shakti in 70s). 2. A reaction by you a while ago on Hari Haran , may be your first was the same song and I did comment that seeing the film footage of the song was a audiovisual gastronomical overload.
