A talk by Jeff Speck at the Creating Communities Conference 2020
How important are walkable environments? Are we seeing an urban design crisis? What health benefits can walkable cities bring? Are the problems in America relatable to the UK? How best can these be achieved with support of community and Government?

In twenty years, the next “Tesla” tech company will be building these types of neighborhoods- it’s the future. We went a little crazy with a super expensive way of living, one that created a car tax. It’s healthier to walk and bike.

Have you heard of the “Culdesac” start up that’s building a post-car neighborhood in Tempe Arizona? If you look up “Culdesac Tempe”, you should find it. It’s an awesome design!

Great talk Jeff .. I learned a lot. I stayed in Rosemary beach a few years back and loved it. Nice work.

My biggest pet Peeve and I believe is an absolute menace to modern architecture is the ubiquity of “dwarf” trees. They maintain their impotent lollipop shape and size and the neighborhood never attains the cool, sheltered filtered light of a mature city and instead harsh sunlight and hardscape dominate, a miserable urban heat island.

This is unavoidable in new developments. Trees take a long time to grow. Even fast-growing species like silver maple can take decades to develop a dense canopy. And far longer for slow growers like oaks. Mature trees are one of the most valuable features of older neighborhoods. Also, sadly North America lost its American Chestnut and Elm Trees to invasive diseases in the 20th century. And is in the process of losing its Ash Trees. The lost Ash trees will need to be replaced by small saplings. To make matters worse urban trees have high mortality and many will die and need to be replanted, so it takes even longer to develop a nice mature treescape.

[43:40] Fun trick: maximize the video player to full screen, then look at the green square in the center of the neighborhood depicted on the right. Without taking your eyes off the central green square, you will notice small orange circles popping up at each of the surrounding intersections.
