Walking and Peripheral Artery Disease | Dr. Anahita Dua
Walking is the best medicine for managing symptoms of intermittent claudication with Peripheral Artery Disease (P.A.D.). But not just any basic steps will expand your collateral network to improve flow. Dr. Anahita Dua explains how to walk effectively to grow a natural bypass around narrowed vessels. Also, download The Way To My Heart's "How to Walk" handbook to learn more and to track your steps! Here is the link:

Fantastic and extremely informative video! l am 76 years old and could just now stand walking around my house for 5 minutes and got SOB while doing so. At my VA Hospital I had the Bp test of the four extremities and it was normal. So did not speak to a vascular surgeon as of yet. Should I seek further evaluation and possibly a surgical intervention? I had a double bypass in 2018 due to The Widow Maker. My ascending Aorta is 4.5 I am 10 percent service connected Vietnam Vet who drank the toxic water at Camp Lejuene and was recently diagnosed with MGUS after I insisted on being tested. I was also exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam. My VA doctor seems to only wish to monitor me for Multiple Myeloma and seems to not want to diagnose me with PAD or acknowledge neurological conditions related to MGUS such as left Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, cervical stenosis which I have been diagnosed with. I also believe my current MGUS shows I acquired a secondary immune deficiency disease as well Thanks for reading. Frustrated in NH

I’m from Canada Toronto Vaughan, I have M.S. and I’ve been fine for 25 years no meds always exercised but now at 65 I’m having circulatory issues in my calves and my feet feel sleepy and cold feel like legs are going to give out - my family dr is referring me to a vascular Specalist called One Vascular they are located in Sunnybrook- I’m wondering if it’s bc I have fallen into a slump of not exercising since my very bad Covid case where I had a double pneumonia and I was hospitalized for 3 weeks, they gave me a needle daily in my tummy (trombone) to stop me from getting blood clots - I’m wondering if this is a combo of a lingering effect from my bad Covid case in 2021 and my M.S. now? My dr. told me that carbohydrates are the cause of arterial blockage, not fat. I have been healthy and active all my life, and used my legs A LOT. I thought I maintained a proper diet avoiding excessive fat and sugar. I ate carbs in the form of bread, cereal, grains, and fruit. Now I am told to go on a KETO diet of high fat and low carbs. What is the reality?

It's what researchers have studies. I haven't seen research on running or swimming. They say it's because of the way in which the muscles are used. I would suggest following Kevin Morgan, PAD patient, Ironman, and PhD athletewithstent.com/the-art-of-running-with-peripheral-arterial-disease-pad/

Im 65 im going to get my second bypass on my right leg, it's clogged 90 percent, but the funny thing is that i have no pains on my leg when i walk, how do explain that? I think she's right, by walking alot and it hurts , I must grew new small vessels where I got decent blood flow . Sometimes they also called spider vains.
@TheWayToMyHeart
@TheWayToMyHeart 7 ай бұрын
Why are they doing another bypass if there's no symptoms? Sounds like you have been doing a great job building collateral vessels! Also, have you checked to see, if it is 90% blocked, whether they might be able to suck the clots out in a minimally invasive way? Have you sought a second opinion? We've seen blocked bypasses never need to be opened up because the individual ended up persevering with pad and building their own collateral network of vessels. Happy to discuss if you contact our leg saver hotline for free support 415-320-7138

If there is a diagnosis of two below the knee veins 100% blocked and one vein open is walking still as effective? No pain. Only slight swelling in one foot. I walk about 5-7 miles per day prior to the diagnosis (67 yo).
@TheWayToMyHeart
@TheWayToMyHeart Жыл бұрын
That's great that you are able to walk that much with two arteries blocked below the knee! Good for you! I bet you are growing your collateral network! I am imagining that you have some blockages in your below-the-knee arteries? There are three arteries below the knee. Anterior Tibial (front), Posterior Tibial (back), and Peroneal (center). Doctors will not perform an intervention on those vessels if you are not experiencing 'rest pain' at night or they're not limiting your lifestyle. If they do ever get to that level of pain, it's important to find a doctor who specializes in treating the small vessels below the knee and into the foot. Not all PAD doctors can do this or are willing to do this. Typically ones who treat below the knee are diabetic foot specialists as they have extra vascular training to carefully send wires and balloons into the smaller vessels. If you ever want to talk about your symptoms or need help finding a doctor call our Leg Saver Hotline at 415-320-7138

No matter how you classify PAD pain ; wether as claudication or as Critical limb ischemia . If you leave it to the later you will have tissue loss and that damage can never be repaired. Treat early and prevent damage. This is the dichotomy I find between surgical procedures and treatment by intervention specialists. And until you experience the pain of PAD you can never understand. Your an amazing surgeon who has endovascular skills but no “ buckets “, should exist only treatment.

@TheWayToMyHeart
@TheWayToMyHeart 6 ай бұрын
It may not take away all of the pain. But if your body is responding to your walking efforts to push through the claudication, it should create enough flow to improve symptoms dramatically. 80-year old Kevin Morgan is a great example of how it can work. He wrote a book on how he did it: athletewithstent.com/ - That being said, if you are having rest pain that wakes you up at night and you have to dangle your legs over the side of the bed and/or a wound that won't heal, that's the time to discuss with your doctor other options. But if your doctor prescribes walking as medicine for you, here's a great guide to help you better understand how to walk effectively to build the collateral network of vessels: simplebooklet.com/walkingbrochureperipheralarte

@@cooterhead_jones make sure to check the find a doctor section of padhelp.org to ensure her doctor is using the most advanced tools and techniques for less trauma to the vessel. One recommendation we make with patients is tthat Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) be used by the supervising physician during treatment to ensure the proper sizing and placement of any catheters, balloons, and/or stents. Another recommendation is to ensure the doctor is trained and willing to offer both coming down from the groin and coming up from the foot as options for access to the arteries in case way direction fails as well as can provide surgical alternatives (either personally or via referral) if both of those aren't successful in getting adequate blood flow. It's good to always have options. Make sure to ask for before and after images as well as case notes following the procedure so you have them for your records.
