In Episode 103 of the India Darshan travel series, I embarked on a thrilling day trip north of Bhuj to explore the world's largest salt desert, the Rann of Kutch. This extraordinary adventure started early as I set out to witness the vast, mesmerizing salt flats that stretch as far as the eye can see.
The Rann of Kutch
Walking across the Rann of Kutch, with its expansive 75,000 sq. km. salt desert, was a surreal experience. Normally, this area teems with visitors during the Rann Utsav from November to February. However, visiting during the off-season meant I had this stunning landscape almost entirely to myself. Despite the soaring temperatures above 40°C and the hot, dry winds, the unique beauty of the salt desert was captivating. Recent rains had left the salt a bit muddy, but venturing deeper revealed pristine patches perfect for photos and videos. This one-of-a-kind experience was truly unforgettable.
Kalo Dungar (The Black Hill)
Next, I headed to Kalo Dungar, or The Black Hill, the highest point in Kutch at an altitude of 485 meters. This spot offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Rann of Kutch, showcasing untouched, bright white salt flats. Kalo Dungar also features a Hanuman temple and a fascinating Magnetic Point where vehicles in neutral gear roll uphill on their own-a fun and unique phenomenon to witness.
The Road to Heaven and Dholavira
Continuing my journey, I made my way to the famed Road to Heaven. This aptly named stretch, surrounded by the Rann on both sides and water during the season, provides a stunning 30 km drive that feels like a journey to the heavens. At the end of this road lies Dholavira, a UNESCO World Heritage site and an excavated Harappan city offering a glimpse into ancient civilization.
Fuel Woes and Tips
Although there are other sites like Kadiya Dhro to explore in the area, the scarcity of fuel stations is a challenge. Without a vehicle with a large fuel tank and excellent mileage, it can be tough to venture deeper into the desert. I refueled at Khavda village on the way to Dholavira, but running low on fuel made the return trip tense. Luckily, I made it back to the station just in time.
