WALKING ROUTE MAP: goo.gl/ATY7jE
In this walking tour video, I explored some alleys and other areas on the northern side of Hanoi's Old Quarter. This just shows you the kind of amazing exploration walks you can have around Hanoi city without having to go very far, especially if you're visiting and staying in the Old Quarter.
Every turn of the corner can reveal something amazing to be seen and discovered!
Some highlights seen along the way:
-Dong Xuan Market (just briefly at the beginning)
-Glassware alley
-Long Bien Station & Bridge
-One of my favorite Bun Cha restaurants, at 24 Hong Phuc street
-Chau Long Market
-Truc Bach Lake
Join me as I experience food, culture, and exploration in Asia!

I recommended one of my personal favorite bun cha restaurants in this video. Maybe you missed that part? Also, I don't care about more views or subscribers. I make my videos because I want to make them. If people like them, that's great. If not, it doesn't effect me.

Cory how are you doing? So glad you are posting again. Great information, on the Bridge and Eiffle Tower having the same architects, you can see similarities in design. Does it ever rain in Vietnam? Most of the Vlogs always show it so sunny and cloud free.

Yes, it rains a lot in the summer months, and also some rains in March. The heaviest are definitely in summer months, though. I don't film in the rain because it's difficult to hold an umbrella while trying to film and zoom and focus with just one hand, plus I don't want to destroy my camera.

Oh cool, glad this can help you out a bit. Unfortunately, there aren't many paths or stuff next to the Red River because it floods several times per year. It's just too dangerous to build a jogging path or anything along it. If you want more info on jogging in Hanoi, you should join some of the expat groups on Facebook and pop your questions over there. I see many expats going on morning and evening jobs in the Tay Ho area, or around West Lake. I'm sure they could chime in with some useful tips!

I will put a map in the beginning of future videos, but I also don't think Google Maps is a very high tech thing. Anyone can click the map link, and then see the map. You can zoom in or out, see street names, business names, etc. Very useful tool. Thanks for your feedback!

Dammmm, that's a lot of walking. The map looked like you walk the entire country, lol! I like your narration giving us historical facts along the way. btw what was the woman saying over the P.A system on the 36.27 nark.
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
I couldn't clearly hear what the speak system was shouting, but that's a common thing to hear. Many of the bicycle vendors advertise what they sell with a speaker and battery system on their bicycle. Some sell rice cakes and other snacks, some sell cold drinks like iced tea, other sell services like knife sharpening, watch repair, shoe cleaning, etc. Sorry I couldn't help clarify what it was though, maybe someone else who speaks Vietnamese knows exactly what it's saying. To me, it was kind of muddled sounding and wasn't so clear.

Can you make a whole walking video around the West Lake, that would be awsome !! And it may take more than 1 hour...
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
I made a video when I walked 17km around West Lake. It took about 5 hours. It wasn't a walking video like this, though. It was just some highlights along the way. 5 hours is too long for my camera batteries and memory cards, especially in 4K resolution.

AAAWWWW man! you not only walked right past my apartment (Hang Bun & Pham Hong Thai) but I was down at the market shopping that same day! and I walked there on pretty much the same route you walked (opposite direction ofc) I'm guessing I was there later in the day than you filmed but still... my dream of running into you in the street while you film a walk and video bombing one of your vids was SO CLOSE! lol anyways, im happy to see the attached maps now. they are very helpful. and the overdubbed narration is very nice. professional AF! one more thing... do you remember that video you did months ago of a restaurant that is hidden in an upstairs location where you ate the crab soup with water-bug extract in it? i really want to go there but i cant find the video... or the restaurant keep making these fun videos!

and if you walked north at truc bach instead of west theres a bunch of cool stuff on that island type area. especially 37 Nam Trang which is a cafe set up to be a replica of a food store circa 1972, full of antiques and historical photos and serves regional "home cooking" style meals. you should check it out one day youll love it!

Oh wow, very cool! Small world, huh? It's surprising how small Hanoi actually is, in comparison to how many people live in this city. Very dense population. One day, I'm sure you'll see me walking around filming. Definitely come say hi. hehe Are you sure it was me who made that video? I never made a crab soup with water bug extract video.
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the island is a neat little spot in Hanoi. I get my haircut from Korigami hair salon there. Not the best in the city, but they speak English so 100K is good for me. I used to go to House of Barbaard, which is closer to my house, but it's 400K. It's a super nice barber shop but the price is just too high for my hair. hehe I'll have to check out that cafe you mentioned, sounds cool. I'm sure I've walked by it a few times but never noticed. Thanks for the tip!

its kinda hidden away down a dead end street but its really good. ive had dishes there ive never seen anywhere else, the owner cooks stuff she remebers from her childhood. also ask for the "ration coupons" you pay by buying these little replicas of actual food ration coupons (they let you keep them) i think its one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. they have a facebook page.

Rainy season was from end of June through the beginning of September, so now we're enjoying cooler breezes with the autumn season. Walking is much more comfortable since I don't come home covered in sweat these days. It's still hot when it's sunny, though. But that should change soon. Next week is supposed to be the real cold of autumn and winter and won't go away until spring. I can't wait!

Are there any bigger shops like H&M, supermarkets etc. or can you just find these tiny traditional shops in Hanoi?
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
You can go to shopping centers and find western companies like Adidas, Levi's Jeans, Zara, etc. There's no real H&M in Hanoi (that I know of), but lots of copycat small shops that use the H&M logo. But inside, none of the clothes are H&M. And there are supermarkets and movie theaters and stuff like that. My walking videos are mainly in the old areas of the city and residential areas, because most of my viewers can easily see shopping malls and western stores in their own countries. I want to show things they'll NEVER see, like these small hidden alley ways filled with so many little shops and stuff like that. ^^ I will try to make a walking video soon in an area of Hanoi where there's lots of fashion shops, just to show viewers that there are newer looking places in this city too. hehe

Yeah, there are some PC gaming rooms around Hanoi, but not as many as like Korea where there's a ton of them on every single block. From the PC rooms I've seen when walking by, many have old looking desktops... most likely refurbished machines. There are also some gaming rooms, not for PC but for PS4 or Xbox One. But yeah, just some, not a lot.

Hi Corey - I’m heading to Hanoi in December, where would be your favourite place to get a Pho if you could only choose one ??
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
This is such a tough thing. I know when people travel, they always want to know what's the BEST ______. I feel that's very limiting because every shop or street food place makes it slightly different. I personally like the pho shop right outside my house, but I know others would consider it nothing special. If you're in the Old Quarter, I'd suggest 49 Bat Dan street. It's a local style place with northern style pho. It's quick, nothing flashy or fancy, just normal commoner's style pho for working people. If you're outside of the Old Quarter, 13 Lo Duc street has an interesting pho with the beef being wok-fried to give it a smokey taste, and their broth has been boiling forever. But the price is a bit higher than other places. I would definitely avoid Pho 10 at 10 Ly Quoc Su street. It's just hyped up TripAdvisor pho, always full of tourists and backpackers and never any local Vietnamese. It doesn't taste any better than any other shop I've had pho from. Try out some random places, I promise you'll be happy with most, if not all, of them. ^^

That's very interesting to know! I've always wanted to visit both India and China, after reading novels that took place in those countries when I was in elementary and middle school. Hai Phong is where my girlfriend is from, I used to visit there often by a 1.5 hour bus ride from Hanoi, until she moved to Hanoi herself in June. It's a nice city that's a bit rough around the edges, but I like it like that. Good food, very fun locals everywhere, wild rush hour traffic. But I think you'll be used to it from having lived in China and India. Here are some videos I filmed in Hai Phong: -Hai Phong Street Food: Snails, Seafood, and Fertilized Quail Eggs: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m5h0gdqVvKeUo6c.html -3 DAYS of TẾT in HAI PHONG, VIETNAM - LUNAR NEW YEAR 2018: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ra2YaLdz0a-7k3k.html Thanks for commenting and watching!

There never seems to be anyone buying stuff in all those shops. How do they make any money?
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
I've asked myself this question many times, even back in Korea! Seoul has similar neighborhoods as Hanoi, where a single street will have nothing but shops selling the same exact thing and they're all next to each other. I think back in the day, everyone would go to the shops personally to buy stuff. But now everything is done online, so these businesses have their stores, but they constantly have delivery drivers arriving to pick up goods to take elsewhere. But yeah, just how often do people buy is another question. No idea! hehehe sorry
I wish I could change THIS fast! 🤣
