Yellowstone’s Northeast Entrance has been closed since June 13th, 2022 due to record flooding.
On July 2nd, 2022 the park service opened the north entrances to foot traffic only, creating a unique and epic opportunity for those willing to put in a little effort. July is typically the busiest month for Yellowstone, but I was there all by myself. It was awesome!
UPDATE: (as of July 12th, bicycles are also allowed to enter the north and northeast entrance along with foot traffic)
I walked/hiked into Yellowstone through the Northeast entrance on July 6th, 2022. According to the ranger at the entrance station there had only been 20 visitors that entire day and most didn’t go more than a mile before turning around. After the first mile I didn’t see a single person and when I left the rangers told me I was the last person in the park. Having visited Yellowstone yearly for the past 40 years I can say this was one of the most interesting, unique and awesome Yellowstone experiences I have ever had.
I was able film several areas of the road that had been damaged by the flooding. After walking 4.3 miles into the park I discovered I had no water and had to turn around at Barronette Peak. On the way out I spotted a black bear and filmed him cross the road.
The Northeast entrance of Yellowstone has always been the least busy entrance to the park. Still there are two small gateway communities (Silvergate and Cooke City) that rely on tourism to survive. With two of the three roads leading to these towns closed due to the floods these communities are hurting. At the same time the lack of tourists has created a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these remarkable areas with almost no tourists. For those willing to travel a little out of their way to reach these places the reward will be unforgettable.
