"One of the Oregon Coast's leading destination towns is the historic riverfront in Florence, OR. Originally the Siuslaw estuary was the winter home for the Siuslaw tribe. French, Russian and Spanish explorers and traders moved through the area, and in 1909 a river port was established here. The district thrived economically with industry from fishing, canning, lumber and rock quarries and eventually tourism. Today, discover the scenic boardwalk and harbor lined with historic buildings, landmarks, public art, unique shopping and excellent coastal dining." - www.eugenecasc...

I would really like to spend retirement in Florence because althoiugh it rains alot, they have temperature in the mid 60's in August and I love cool temperatures and also no snow in the winters which are very mild near the coast. The last 2 months where I live on the east coast have been in the mid and upper 90's with high humidity . Where I live there are only around 3 or 4 months in a year when the weather is nice. The rest of the year is either too freezing or too hot.

Me and my wife visited Florence last week, but we went to the newer part of the city, not the Old Town. Next time we will!

@@theitwinerary yes, we enjoyed it very much! I was much impressed by what I saw and the people I met. Like I told my wife, "I wouldn't mind relocating to this area from Coos Bay." But I was told by a person I met in Florence that the average house goes for around $450,000. That's way beyond my affordability!!

The river is pronounce…Si-u-slaw. I was born and raised there in Florence before I joined the navy and left…the town has blown up since I was there, the population then was 4,000 people…we didn’t have the casino or McDonald’s or even Safeway in town…those aptments are all new and that boardwalk was all dirt and gravel

HONEYMAN CAMPGROUND-a few miles south of town. You can swim and paddleboat next door at warm freshwater Cleaowax Lake and may even enjoy going dune buggy riding near by--at Adventure Sports... or some other dune buggy venture. Unfortunately, moving to liberal Eugene, offers very little recreation, except for the Olympic Trials, unless you are a bicycler who can cycle to Florence on week-ends to get FAR AWAY from Eugene as possible. That's the truth. The left coast --including Eugen and Portalnd, s not the safest or best place to raise children today- as it was 50 years ago. Advice from a H.S. and College Grad from Oregon. Get out while you can.

Pronounce the river name correctly please, Sigh-you-slaw spelled Siuslaw. The reason I take offense to the mispronouncing of this is the fact the river and the original first peoples of the area are intertwined. The Siuslaw peoples were effectively eradicated by white authorities who breed the tribe out of existence with land ownership laws that excluded anyone not white. The only Indians who owned land we’re married to whites. The people were removed to boarding schools and not allowed to speak their native language. By the 1960’s the language was extinct. Only a few original words exist and are questionable as to authenticity. Siuslaw, “sparkling waters”

@@davidgletne4380 it took me a minute, Lovejoys, never been in there. Looks to be popular. I stay out of the popular places or the tourist draw places. I prefer quiet with less density. Not easy to find good places on the coast that aren’t crowded. Jerry’s and Darlings are good greasy burgers. In reedsport I really like The Schooner restaurant by the discovery center. Off the beaten path…. Hidden gems.

History is a favorite subject of mine. I know a lot of this history as well as the history of many Native-American tribes in and outside of Oregon. Of course these names can be tricky to pronounce, especially if you are not from the area and seeing the name for the first time. Thanks for sharing this history for those viewers who may not know it.

I lived in Coos Bay Oregon until I was 18 and then left for Eugene Oregon. That was 35 or 37 years ago; I wish that I never left Coos Bay Oregon. 🥲
