Walking Omaha beach. The beach that suffered most casualties assaulted by the 1st Division and the 29th division.
In these videos we will visit D-day sites as if I was guiding you. We will actualy see more than if you were with me. Video allows tele-transporting a few miles in a few seconds.
This first video sets the scene for D-day. Why it was on the 6th June 1944 and why was it on the normandy beaches between Caen and the Cherbourg penisnsula.

In 2015 we visited Normandy and hired Colin McGarry the producer of these videos. We live in Chicago and had never been to Normandy before. There is no question that had we not hired a guide we would not have seen half of what we did in the day long tour. Colin even made sure we had a reservation for lunch.

I’ve been to Omaha a few times, but there’s always more to learn, so thank you for doing this. Btw why was the inexperienced National Guard 29th Division chosen to lead, along side the battle hardened 1st?

Good video and accurate comments - I've been to Omaha a few times now and read several accounts including Joseph Balkoski's definitive work. The Bedford Boys is worth a look too, telling the story of the first wave of the inexperienced 29th Div as they attempted to get ashore opposite the Vierville draw. My one criticism would be that, geographically, your 1st vid leaps about quite a bit and might confuse viewers who have never visited. My thoughts are that your various segments would benefit from being rearranged to progress from one end of the beach to the other, or perhaps by telling the story chronologically in each sector. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the feedback. it’s a difficult choice between following each unit chronologically or showing different parts of the beach at different times. when I exhaust my list of planned sites I’ll go into more detail on different parts of the beach.

Where did you get the detailed maps of the Widerstandsnest showing the crew served weapon positions?
@WalkingDday
@WalkingDday 4 жыл бұрын
They are part of a vector map that I’m making of the battle of normandy. A lot of the details for the WNs come from www.atlantikwall.co.uk/# Or books. The atlantikwall site is not very user friendly. You must tap on the menu to the left then look for Normandy, then there’s a list of all the WNs with details , but not allways.

If you dont work as a tour guide, you should. The famous piece of film showing the soldier getting shot while running up the beach, wasnt that filmed below WN60?

I think the film you’re talking about was on a Commonwealth beach.

How many guns of 75mm or larger were covering Omaha Beach?
@WalkingDday
@WalkingDday 3 жыл бұрын
The strong points went from WN60 to WN73. Three were in land so 11 were on the beach. WN 71 didn't have artillery. Some say that WN70 didn't have it's guns and WN62 had one in 2 casemates. That makes about 9 guns from 88mm down to 50mm. The 88mms were at each end.

Good logic because the mg gunners will think they hit him. And select another target
@WalkingDday
@WalkingDday 3 жыл бұрын
You could look at it that way, but if you hear an MG and it’s coming at you you’re already hit, and MG operators didn’t have to aim at any one , they just fired.

Every German with a gun was opening up on them. Distances long and short. Casualties were severe until they had to reload and ran low on ammo. Pure luck whether you got hit or not. First guys off had it bad.
