Exploring the fascinating city of Meknes, Morocco, which is much less touristy than other Moroccan cities such as Marrakesh, Fez and Chefchaouen. Just watch out for hustlers trying to sell you things you may or may not want.

I visited Morocco in 1984, 3 times. I had some very strange and confusing encounters with some men - think I was about to be kidnapped before police arrived - but I also had some very positive and reassuring encounters with men. Was able to reconnect with a very nice artist in Chefchaouen on Facebook in 2020. I purchased a hand made stool I lugged back tied to my backpack and still have. I wore a robe (people laughed at me because it turned out to be for a young man) and a scarf after which I felt people were more comfortable with me as a western woman. After that I began to love scarves and would wear them all the time. Eventually, it felt uncomfortable to not wear a scarf - I can imagine how women feel after wearing a burka for a long time- just so uncomfortable not to wear it.
