Mylcem: This is S. E. 17. London, near the Walworth Road. When I was living there, my friends and relatives called this, "The Lane." "We're going down the lane," they gleefully exclaimed.

Some of you will find this very hard to believe but back in the 1960's the Newspaper Vendor of The London Evening News left his hat in the street OVERNIGHT for people to leave the money for the paper which were in a pile next to the hat and the money was still there the next day. IN THE STREET OVERNIGHT ! THAT is how safe our area was. My Uncle gave complete strangers lifts at Bus Stops if a few of them were going his way.......WHAT A DIFFERENCE !

Different World Hailey. My Friend's Dad used to give 2/3 complete strangers lifts home if they were going his way. He would pull up at the bus stop and they would get in. In fact even NOW in East Grinstead which is very much Old England I buy flowers from crates left in the Grower's front garden and you put the money in an envelope through his letterbox if he is out and take what you want. That is trust :)....and REAL England....

That is true Andrea but the salient point imo is that I did not anyone until I was around 17 years old who did not have 2 parents with the Father giving emotional, practical and financial support to the Mother which gave children the best possible chance in life, with no guarantees and, naturally, exceptions to the rule, either way. Of course you can make it with one parent but you are at an immediate disadvantage though not insurmountable .I went back there on Saturday as I miss the vibe but heard hardly any English spoken.Put in "East St, 1971" and see the enormous difference, please. @@@andreatarling9574

Today (16 March 2020) I've just seen the video "Walking through East Street Market, Walworth, London, UK 8th October 2011". It was fascinating watching East Street Market like that. Haven't been there for for decades, it was fun watching it through someone else's 'eyes'. Well done and Thank you. :-)

This was 2011. It's virtually NIL White/British now .I could walk down The Walworth Road ( the original road he was on ) , when I lived there and I, vividly, recall seeing a Black Guy there, circa 1965 and he was pointed out as such an occurence was soooo rare and that was just 3 miles from Brixton/Peckham. It was 99% White/British then and a fantastic place to live and socialise just 3 miles from Central London EVERY SINGLE Child in EVERY Primary School was White then. Now it''s around 5% White/British kids in school.

It's more than that SSR. I have lived with 4 different Black Ladies. 2 were Black/British of Jamaican antecedency. One was French and the current Lady, who I am living with for the 3rd time is from "Country" in Jamaica. I treat everyone with courtesy, friendliness, respect and positivity and if yyou look at any comments regarding thise Subscibtions to Black people they are all good-natured and encouraging. HOWEVER that does not mean I want MY indigenous Culture to be severely diluted or disappear altogether in many areas and it also does not mean I am not unaware of the crime figures that were annually reported between 1970-2005 inclusive. Go to Kingston or Abuja and ask the locals if they don't mind going from 98% of the population to only "One Birth in 10" which was the statistic in 2016 in Inner London, mon ami...

@@Khloe_dancer_model it is not replacement, it is called 'White Flight'. White people, and many blacks that were able, left the big council estates for the suburbs. Many in SE London moved to Kent; Eastenders moved to Essex. I am black and grew up on the Brandon Estate in the 70s. I use to go down the Lane with my late mum. Yes those were good old days, the market was very white but there was also a lot of racism. Members of the National Front use to sell their newspaper - "The British Bulldog" - in the Lane quite openly. For me it's safer now as the racists are not as brazen as they were back then.

We have hipsters and kids who rent while there at uni, mostly white (as many here would prefer) but to be James blunt they have sweet fanny Adams to do with us that reside and have grown up in the manor..p.s I didn't even mention the Chinese and multiple shops that have closed due to corvid. On Heygate Estate Sir Michael Caine said a "rotten place" that "should never have been built", he also hated the gangs at the elephant. I am a very nostalgic person and can not tell you how much I used to love living there from 1954-1983. My Council Block is on 2'30 seconds HERE IS THE DIFFERENCE !! When I lived there and it was 99% White/British ANYONE could walk into my Council Block with no problem. NOW with The White/Britih LONG gone there are Grills on the windows AND TWO security systems AND CCTV !!!! If that does not illustrate the difference in personnel then nothing will ! It was a great place but I saw the future and bought a house on the South London/Kent Borders as so many did and the Walworth School Re-Union is held in Bexley, NOT Walworth as no-one lives there anymore. !

Nostalgia can engender romanticism. My British Caribbean family moved into Knight House on Elsted Street in 1969. You're right SE17 did seem like it was 99% white, which is why I am absolutely convinced the 3 times our flat got burglarized, it had to be some of those infamous villains known to inhabit the area. We were told not to take it personally, as villains would steal milk from a baby's bottle. So, no hard feelings eh!! I loved growing up there too, even though it was far from perfect.

Just seen your comment but the fact is I don't at all to the extent that I have lived 3 times with the same Lady since 2000. She is not from Kingston but "Country". I, also, used to go out with endless more and have lived with a French Black Lady and a British Black Lady. What I DO "hate" is the total disappearance of my Culture in area after area. Another Black Lady told me last Christmas, after an interview near Aldgate/Whitechapel, East London that she never heard a single word of English spoken walking down the local High Streets while shopping. That is NOT absorbing immigrants but being swamped by them. THAT is the difference.

@@labessss they make out as if it's the british who are too lazy to open businesses but in reality it's too expensive because most people have to earn a living and pay rent at the rates of the city while a migrant can come in and get set up with their invested money that the countries they come from do give them, they want these people to take over business districts cos it means they can subvert a country though migration, it's a lot easier to do than though war. just look at oxford street and picadilly where all the big names disappeared back in the mid 2000s "Credit crunch" all the investment companies already went bankrupt thanks to new labour. you got the buy ups happening and then up pricing the land, obviously landlords can set rates for people they want to have businesses and those who don't. i mean look at tourist shops in westend they sell dogshit products and are settled in a property with a rent of 10k a month, they aren't paying rent they are just occupying the property till mcdonalds or some other corporate entity wants to use the plot. dirty games realestate do, Racism doesn't come in to it but it's a good diversion when people don't understand whats going on. This country isn't bankrupt, it's corrupt, they want to develop a new city but to do so they need the properties first they got to make sure it's people they can Eject easily too, and they can very easily make it politically correct to eject foreign invaders and repossess the properties cos that's how these government fucks work. Joe public will go along with it because they see constantly in the news the take over and add in grooming gangs drug dealers and the vile likes the public will be all to happy to vote to kick them out too. but it's early days still. the backs work like hermit crabs, they let the people take the risks build the realestate up develop and then they hyper inflate and bankrupt then kick them out. i don't blame migrants for wanting to come here, but they have to understand when they no longer serve a purpose they will become the scapegoats

I used to live in the Council Block Eliana that you see on 2 minutes and 30 seconds of this video from 1954-1983 when I moved to the edge of South London as I saw what was happening even then with Mass Caribbean Immigration. That has been replaced by African Immgration but when I lived there it was 99% White/British and in 1965 a Black Guy got pointed out in the Main Road as it was so unusual to see one ! It was VERY safe !

Eliana Herrera Well considering Africa and the Carribean is part of the common wealth, not crazy at all, the demographics of some areas changed when other communities moved in and the white English moved out. Africa was affected by the British empire and many African people were given rites of passage to Britain, Britain had to pay its dues for bleeding Africa dry. Postwar Britain had a huge labour shortage and in the 1950s many Carribean people were invited to work in the UK and helped to rebuild the country. Today all immigration needs regulation! Sounds like you don't know much about British history.

No Britain is very multicultural, diverse, tolerant and welcoming. It just seems this video is attracting racist commenters. East street market is awesome by the way - a real authentic market and excellent value too :)

It might be multicultural but the only culture that isn't represented is the old cockney Londoner. They were never asked about how they felt about a foreign takeover of their area, because the people in charge didn't want to hear the answer. Families who had traded down the lane for generations were told it was discriminatory to pass down pitches to family members and so they were handed over to newcomers with no attachment to the area. I grew up in Walworth and used to be a barrow boy in the Lane. My parents lived there as did some grandparents and great-grandparents. My mum and brother still live there and when I drive home I can drive the length of the Old Kent Road and not see an white face. I would love to see the reaction of an African village if a crowd of people moved in from Walworth and took over their market by selling sarsaparilla and jellied eels and keeping them awake at night playing the piano and singing "Knees up Mother Brown".

Because Rihanna when I lived in East Street it was so safe and crime-free that THe London Evening Newspaper vendor left his papers and money bag in the street overnight if anyone wanted a paper and collected the money on the following morning. It was a VERY safe area with stabbings/murders unheard of and last year there were 3 murders in The Walworth Road in 2 months! THAT is the difference, I'm afraid...
