Ten years ago, 40,000 teenagers walked out of class to play their part in the biggest protests California has ever seen. They vowed that when they could vote, they would use that power to change immigration laws.
Their promises appeared to fade away along with the MySpace accounts they used to help spread the word of their activism. Since then more than 2 million undocumented immigrants have been deported. On Wednesday, a Supreme Court deadlock in effect denied deportation relief and work permits to more than 4 million immigrants who have been living in this country illegally. The presumptive Republican presidential candidate says he wants to build a wall and increase deportations.
The young people who walked out helped seed the Dreamer movement, yet in recent elections, the participation of millennial Latinos has failed to grow.
But when we caught up with dozens of these now young adults who had walked out of more than 50 schools across Southern California, they said the student walkouts in March 2006 had shaped them in ways still very much alive.
Today they are military veterans, physicians, educators, and policy aides for the mayor of New York and San Jose City Council.

The day of the walk out was surreal. The rumor of a walkout had been spreading all morning. I knee I had to take part, but I couldn't tell if it was true or not. Come recess, myself and hundreds of other students went to the foot ball field entrance and braced ourselves. This was actually going to happen. We ran for the fences and headed for a hole the seniors before us had made years ago. I remember looking back and saw so many students being rangled up by the guards. They couldn't make it. About half of us made it out. We all scattered not knowing where to go from there. Before we knew it police were surrounding the school. We stayed as a group, they can't arrest us all, right? And we marched over to ELAC, seemed like the reasonable thing to do. Sure enough, another group of students came from one side, and then another group of students from another. We merged as one force and marched our way to city hall. I was scared, excited, but I knew it was more than just about me. It was about the parents of the students I was marching with. My mother had gotten her citizenship years ago. Still, the thought of having your family attracted by a government you call home, even as a young child I understood the importance of standing up for your loved ones. Most of us students were citizens, many of our parents were not. We as Americans stood up for illegals because it was so close to home. I only feel shame that the media played it off as just a bunch of kids who wanted to ditch school. When I talked to many of my professors they treat it as such. I would always remind them that our parents were on the line. Always, our parents were on the line. To this day they still are. Not only that but children now, children who were far younger than we were in the day we marched. The fight never stops. Neither will the passion to stand for what is right.

I remember taking part of the walkout my 9th grade year. I was so terrified for my family and my sisters. I told my friends to take care of my books and I walked out with my sister and hundreads of students, waking Mexican flags, shouting walk out. We passed by a middle school and so many kids wanted to join us. Maybe they understood, maybe not, but I remember we told them, "No, stay in school. We'll fight for you." I remember walking on the freeway for a mile, people in their cars on the other side shouting awful things at us, throwing thing. We had to keep telling each other, "Don't respond to them, don't throw anything at them, don't fight them. That's what they want. The cops want a reason throw our asses in jail." (A bit dramatic, but hey, we were teenagers on a mission) I remember my dad picking me up when my sister and I got back to school at the end of the day. He wasn't mad, he was proud that we did this. That we stood up and spoke out. God this just brought back so many memories of that day.

It was a little after my time, but I remember sitting at the park reading my book when I was suddenly surprised by a huge crowd over overwhelmingly Latino youths. I was very proud of them for coming out against Bush's initiative. It's disgusting how the same white liberals who feigned solidarity back then are today the biggest lovers of the Bush family.

Ana Quezada Exeter, Ca As freshmans in high school walking out was the only thing On our minds. This law went agains our believes, our dreams and most importantly our parents. A lot of the Hispanic kids at Exeter Union High walked out and started walking to a bigger city 20 miles away, on the way we passed by Farmersville high were kids saw us and jumped the fence to join. The cops from farmersville started arresting or detaining kids who jumped the fence but some made it to our group .Patrol cars started blocking our ways but we continued, we got rides from people driving by or ran away, swat unit came out to Walnut road but we continued evading them. The southern and northern gang members joined without problems walking along each other with the Mexican flag and the American flag flying high. One of the best experiences I’ve even been a part of.

I was one of these children walking out of school with my best friend Samantha. We walked for cause from our middle school in Maywood Ca all the way to DTLA. We were so tired and hungry and the stores were just giving us free food and drinks. I remember this day so vividly and I am so proud of us. ❤

Be proud of this country then! Fly the American Flag when wanting rights in America. Mexico is a beautiful country with no passion for its people. They have all the natural resources like USA, but they don’t fight for it... Yielding to the Cartels their government doesn’t do right by the people. All this energy from the young is what Mexico needs... I want everyone to be able to live their lives with joy, but I cannot understand why we as Americans don’t fight our government about kicking Mexico in the arse to get their stuff together. It would help all involved.

NO ONE faults these bright, young people for wanting to have a life filled with promise, freedom and prosperity . . . no one. "Attack our community? . . . "discriminate against our families?" NO decent person (which includes the VAST majority of legal US citizens) CONDONES "ATTACKING" OR "DISCRIMINATING" AGAINST ANYONE. However, HOW MANY . . . HOW MANY of their (our) fellow human beings, currently living on less than $2 a day, which is 1.5 BILLION . . . 1.5 b-i-l-l-i-o-n, do these protestors want this single nation to accept? Seriously. Which ones, among those 1.5 billion do NOT deserve a chance to work and earn "a better life?" HOW MANY of those over 1 billion persons can this one country provide that for, WITHIN our own borders? Do they have LESS RIGHTS to "a better life?" DO THESE STUDENTS WANT COUNTRIES TO HAVE NO BORDERS AT ALL? In the meantime, since it appears, from the flags, that a large percentage of these students are Mexican. Do they know that the National Autonomous University of Mexico offers FREE tuition for them? Are they willing to consider using their energy and industriousness to build Mexico's economic and social structures, so that ALL of Mexico's residents can have an opportunity for "A BETTER LIFE?" WHAT DO THEY WANT THE SIZE of the US population (w/ rapidly diminishing farmland) to be? It's already 330 million and counting. Seriously. We human beings are ALL resource consumers. So, seriously, HOW MANY? Thank you.
@smedrano1964

It is a more complicated issue than the one you are presenting.. Because many U.S companies would recruit in Mexico and bring these people to work over here. Also many ordinary US citizens have hired them throughout the decades as babysitters gardeners and people to take care of their elderly. They have worked in construction side-by-side with American workers and have built this country for decades. in the past this was seen as a minor violation .Workers would cross the border illegally year after year and our government would turn a blind eye to this because it was seen as beneficial. Services and crops would have a lower price because these people would come over and they would essentially subsidise our food. And other services. So with the cooperation of our government and US corporations there are no millions of undocumented workers and their descendants here. We essentially turned a blind eye and invited these people here and now this that this issue has become politically beneficial to Republicans we act surprised and outraged at what we ourselves have done.

we use it because we remember where we come from. though the government does absolutely nothing and just continues to be corrupt, we don't let that define our identities. we are Mexican-americans, but Mexicans at heart. some of us struggled to get here and come from a working family. don't be ignorant and confuse idolizing a country, and it's people. yes, the united states has better opportunities than Mexico, but this is no great country either. and if you are Mexican and forget where u come from, what a damn shame u are. I'm Mexican and proud, and that flag represents my people, not the government.

How do you expect to prove that you want to be here when you are waving the flag of another country? Waving the Mexican flag on US soil shows you have more loyalty to Mexico. As well as disrespectful to the US. I wouldn’t fly an American flag on Mexican territory because that would be disrespectful to Mexico. It’s no wonder people harbor negative feelings towards immigrants. Why allow someone to stay in this country when they won’t even respect it? My parents are from Mexico and I was born here, but I was taught to love my country and be proud to be an American 🇺🇸 ❤️🤍💙.
