In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset” I take a walk in & around Ringstead Bay which is located about 9 miles South East of Dorchester on the Jurassic Coast.. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I start my 4.5 mile circular walk at Ringstead - parking my car at the car park near the beach . There is a toll of £6 a day to park although the National Trust car park on the top of the ridge is cheaper … if you decide to start & finish your walk there.
After a gentle stroll along the beach (dogs are allowed in it “off lead” all year round), I head North East following a footpath across fields up to the top of a ridge. There are some great views of the bay to be seen from the ridge before continuing Eastwards past Sea Barn Farm to the beacons on the cliffs at West Bottom.
I then join the South West Coast Path and head West past the Whitenothe cottages and the old WW2 pillbox before dropping down past Holworth House to check out the delightful wooden church - St Catherine By The Sea.
My homeward leg takes me past the remains of a WW2 radar station bunker back to Ringstead where I end with a cup of coffee at the car park cafe.

The crab episode was priceless! I have walked that stretch of the swcp a few times. I did also descend the smugglers path once - quite vertiginous and just one narrow path through the overgrown undercliff. I seem to remember there was a ladder down onto the beach and the exit path from beach had landslipped away so it was all a bit dodgy! Also the Chapel was a life saver for me once as I got there after doing a walk from Lulworth to Tyneham, heading back to Preston near Weymouth. I had got very dehydrated and they were serving tea and cake till 3pm. I arrived at 14.58 but they replenished my water bottle and dispensed tea and cake then let me sit awhile alone in the lovely peaceful garden. They were very proud of their etched window. The three panes were etched by Simon Whistler, an engraver and musician, son of Sir Lawrence Whistler who engraved the windows at the more famous church at Moreton. Fabulous memories brought back by your super video. Thank you - and Logan!

It really was a sweet little church. Glad we didn't try the Smugglers path then!

Gorgeous scenery and I love to see Logan glancing left and right as he trots along in front of you, checking it all out! The nearest I have ever got to this walk is sitting in the top car park, and a little stroll eastwards. I've not been down to the beach so it was great to see it through your eyes and camera!

It is lovely there along the coast for sure. Yes, I think that Logan is better at going uphill than I am!

Brilliant video. A few years ago I did a walk to the radar station but starting from the opposite direction at Lulworth. The changing geology along the route is incredible. I passed many of the landmarks in your video and appreciate the info and history behind them you’ve provided here. The coastal path was quite steep in places, especially at Bat’s Head but well worth the effort for the dramatic views. The chalk cliffs are so high! I took the inland path back on the return leg (called Old Daggers Gate Rd) to West Lulworth. This path followed the top of a ridge and was pretty much hill free but still with breathtaking views all the way looking out to sea.

Another lovely walk for you and Logan. I’ve never been down to that area. It’s surprising what exists in these out of the way spots. Loved the way Logan was fascinated by the crab. Looked as if he wanted to pick it up, but his courage failed him in the end. Great views from the top of the hill and such a beautiful day to be out there. See you again soon.

Glorious video. Just a quick note, there is never anything wrong with the light in any church you visit. Lights on or off. I think you are coming out of the bright sunshine and it seems dark to you but not the camera.

Thanks Roger. I find that in low light, the image stabilization on the Gopro can get a bit distorted with the video image becoming a little "grainy" and "jittery" although I have discovered some different settings on the camera that has improved it a bit. They joys of filming with a Gopro! Cheers.Dave.
