You might have to update your unifi controller to something higher than your current controller to turn the led off. I can't remember when they added that feature, 5.4.11, Also I would consider adding either the Unifi Could Controller or build your own with a raspberry pi, there are a bunch of how-to's on google. I have unifi devices at home and used to use my laptop as the controller but if I didn't have it on for more than a couple days, it would lose connection to my AP's and I wouldn't have internet, the unifi stuff is meant to have an always on controller and after i added a raspberry pi for my controller, it has worked flawlessly.

Going through the library of videos and ran across this. Even 4 years old it still looks like a well designed network. I just up graded my very similar ubiquity network with their new Ubiquity Dream Machine. It’s a good firewall that does intrusion detection and prevention up to 850Mb. Recommend for upgrading the OG network. Maybe even the UDM pro model for Matt for full wire speed 1 gig up and down with ids and ips running.

Funny how I thought I wouldn't end up back on this series, I had no interest at the time. Now I'm scouring for all the information I can to build a home network. I knew I could count on you to obsess enough over it to pull me back into this network stuff. Thanks, Matt.

I converted my office's wifi to Ubiquiti last year with 2 AP's and it's been amazing. I routinely get 100+ Mbps on my iphone. Also just since we're all obsessed/OCD around here, the outdoor HVAC units are condensing units, not air handlers. The indoor unit of a split system is the air handler/furnace/cooling coils or whatever you want to call it.

Awesome network setup! I just made the decision to go all in with Ubiquiti; Edge Router, POE Managed Switch, and in-wall AP's. Luckily, I had the house wired with CAt 5E when it was built, but I now know I should have done more during the build.

Nick Bergmann You can always add more. Contact an electrician to help you pull wires. They likely have lots of experience pulling through finished structures. Use conduit in tough to reach places when possible. Generally 1st floor is easy if there's a basement. 2nd floors get more complicated.

Thought you were using a Meraki MX 60/64 security appliance at one point?? Did I miss something? Also depending on what kind of cameras/storage you go with check out a company called Synology. I have a DS815 which has 8 HD slots and allows you to use multiple versions of RAID. Cool thing about Synology is they bundle a ton of different apps into the appliance so you can have your own dropbox (Cloudsync they call it) as well as Surveillance Station. I use it at home and it's great for hooking IP cameras into. You can define different zones and have it alert via email/sms based on motion detected. By default the Synology NAS appliances have 2 built in licenses and you can purchase more depending on how many IP cams you deploy.

Hi Matt. Those are great wifi AP's very powerful for the price point. I'm an IT professional and I've been using them in small enterprise settings for years within the companies I've worked. Have you heard about their new mesh AP system? You can cover much more area in places you may not have uplink ethernet available. I also suggest investing in their cloud key which is small mini IOT computer to run controller software. Trust me you done't want to host the Unifi controller on a none server system.

It's great for casual internet, but if you deal with virtual machines (remotely) or shoot in 720p video or take photos RAW with DSLRs, you'll need a wired Gigabit Ethernet network. My environment is not the best wireless setup and getting things moved or accessing them fast on a LAN in seconds to minutes over hours is great.

Hi there, just want to comment that I really like your setup. It's neat and very well done cable management. Couple of things that really surprised me though, is the way you put stuff (and chairs for the kids) in the attic and to your shed. I thought it's always hot in FL, not to mention putting the PoE switch in a closed door closet. Regardless, you've done a really great work to set these things up. P.S. You might want to ditch your Time Capsule as it doesn't give you any flexibility to control / monitor your network as opposed to using the EdgeRouter. I retired my Time Capsule a while back ago to a ER Pro-8, and never regretted a single bit.

Also -- Talk to Rommel about adding a Unifi Cloud Key Device (www.ubnt.com/unifi/unifi-cloud-key/). This would enable you to continue to gather information on performance of the network and monitoring it while the unifi software isn't running on your laptop. The software basically runs on that device. It's only like $80.

UAP-AC-LR is my favourite! It listens really well to devices like cell phones and tablets :) Should trench a fiber cable between the two switches for zero latency! Looks to be less than 330ft, no? If so could just trench a direct burial Cat6 cable. Canon HF R800 has external mic input, nice! What blackmagic card were you thinking of getting instead? The Webcaster X1 has a hardware h264 encoder, none of the black magic products I've used have hardware encoders so they need a MONSTER amount of CPU to do the encoding. Never ever had much luck with blackmagic products, I think you did good.

At the risk of upsetting Ubiquity if they are sponsoring this episode, do they still require that you run your own software to manage the hardware? I know some people ran it on Amazon but that is not the same as having a true cloud admin console like Rochio Sprinklers, Roku Players, Apple TVs, etc. This is the reason I think Meraki was purchased for a billion dollars by Cisco - because they have a true SaaS cloud console panel for all their hardware, including their cameras. This is the only reason I have stayed away from Ubiquity but seeing as they are still alive and innovating - I wonder if they have finally stood up a true SaaS control panel which is the only way to deliver a real mobile app which is what everything needs these days. Sounds like Matt is going to play around with some Meraki gear so he will likely see the difference in management that I put so much value on. In any case, glad to see this setup working for Matt - for everyone else out there building their own separate garage/wash-bay - _always run two fiber cables and four Cat6 cables between the garage and the house so you have plenty of connectivity for anything you could ever want to do_ . Matt did not get that tip from the community until it was too late and he had already run electric from the main house and buried that.

I'm genuinely curious how you're going to fare with the wireless bridge once you get cameras in the pole barn and want to stream video. A SpeedTest.net speed test is one thing... but capacity and throughput may be a challenge depending on how many simultaneous cameras you have streaming and other streaming devices. Fortunately, it seems like a pretty clear shot between the bridge and not very far. Ubiquity has really lowered the barrier to entry for prosumer/SMB wireless.
@taylorulrich2027
@taylorulrich2027 7 жыл бұрын
This is all going to ride over how good of a Point to Point connection they have back to the house from the wireless bridges. If they are using channel bonding (40/80MHz) they can support some serious throughput. I'd venture to guess anywhere between 200-450Mbps would be actual throughput.

I am doing something similar and would like the option of being able to livestream certain cameras to youtube. I have looked at Avigilon and Geovision etc. The concern is also bandwidth. The cameras I have been looking at take a huge amount of bandwidth. To stream certain cameras to youtube when I want to is something else I havent figured out yet either. Do those Ubiquiti switches have VLAN support. That would help with the network traffic...Nice to see someone as picky as me doing this stuff.

Need to determine which protocol and frequency you're using over wireless. Protocols would be 802.11/a/b/g/n/ac . I would recommend N or AC running on 5GHz frequency. This will give you highest throughput assuming you enable channel width bonding of 40MHz or 80MHz. 40MHz combines two channels together; 80MHz combines 4 together. Effectively giving your devices higher throughput. With wireless though everything is half duplex which means there are collisions and retransmits going on in the air (as opposed to a wired network being full duplex w/ no collisions/retransmits) . In basic terms a wireless client (iPhone) negotiations a transmit rate with the AP (access point) and the further the client moves from the AP the lower the rate shifts to. With 40MHz channels on 802.11N on 5GHz you could have a max rate of around 450Mbps directly under the AP (assuming your client supports this). In wireless at best it would be half that for actual throughput (225Mbps).

Can anyone break this down to me, like is this like a att uverse home internet? how much does it cost a month.

This is what I needed to get wireless network throughout the property. Uverse would be your provider, then this is the network that gets internet all over the house.

Ive been trying to go back through your videos and find out where abouts your at with your projects. This video was taken less than 2 weeks ago, I saw some other videos about a new garage being built but I dont see it in this video? Did you mean the dedicated wash bay?

Well, ya, I can see that, that is small :P. I say that, but I have a 135 inch screen, projector of course. Is it a TV and that is why?
@ObsessedGarage
@ObsessedGarage 7 жыл бұрын
135 front projected image is unacceptable to me. At this point in time, this is the best display on the planet. As direct view OLED in larger sizes becomes viable, I'll get bigger. A decent projector with an anamorphic lens would cost as much as my entire room.
