Dpc to lintel = 28 courses of brickwork 1 block = 3 courses of brickwork 9 courses of block = 27 courses of brick So a brick size courses of brickettes / coursing bricks are needed to reach the criticsl lintel height . Hope that makes sense 🧱👍🏽

It does make sense, I served my time as a bricklayer in the early 80’s but ended up as an engineer. So I’ve been catching up on the regs watching all your vids ☝️ as I’ve started building extensions for my kids and soon a small bungalow on my daughter’s plot. My biggest shock was the 150 mm cavity ! Also the price of materials. Thanks for the reply I’ll be doing this .

We did and there will be 57 mm insulated plaster board going inside 🧱👍🏽

Sure, but what are the relative climatic conditions? How about earthquake risk? There's a lot of factors involved, so they are not 'shockingly thin' at all in the context of where we are in the world. Building regs here have been increasing the requirements for U values for quite some time - in fact in this very series, Steve mentions that they will likely have to move from 100mm cavities to 150mm to accommodate the insulation required to meet the new building regs U values. Could we make them thicker and put more insulation in? Yes, and some people do indeed do that, but there's quite a cost in terms of money and lost space so provided the structure meets the legally required minimum then most people are happy with that. In this instance, 60cm walls would significantly reduce the available space in the extension as well as costing a lot more, but for not a lot of added benefit, so it would likely mean that if it was required then the owner might not do the work at all. Yes, it would have more insulation, but the rest of the house would be the same as it always was. We don't need to be earthquake proof in the UK, so such hefty brick and rebar walls are not necessary for a house.
